@Herbal Andrographis, The Herbal Remedy Which Suppresses Rheumatoid Arthritis

By Kyle J. Norton

Andrographis paniculata may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, some researchers found.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by immune system mistakenly attacks the joint tissue, leading to the symptoms of swollen, and painful joints. The pain and stiffness in patients with RA often worsen following rest.

In most cases, bones, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments associated with the joint also were found to have certain damage in patients with RA. These may be a result of synovium covering the joints  releasing chemicals during the attack by the immune system that causes the damage to nearby tissue

As of today, researchers do not know What causes the immune system to attack the joint. However, they do know that certain risk factors such as gene mutation, hormone change, smoking are associated with the early onset of the disease.

The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40 and diminishes the quality of life of many elderly

Dr. Júlia Kurkó, the lead author in the study of  "Genetics of Rheumatoid Arthritis — A Comprehensive Review" wrote, "the heritability of RA has been estimated to be about 60 %, while the contribution of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) to heritability has been estimated to be 11–37 %".

In hormone perspective, Oxford Academic wrote "RA is the most common chronic systemic autoimmune disease, with a higher prevalence in women, suggesting female hormonal factors play a role in the development of the disease" and "understanding their impact on RA development is clinically relevant and may result in specific preventive interventions in high-risk populations".

If you are experiencing symptoms of pe have persistent joint pain, tenderness, swelling, redness, stiffness, and loss of joint range of motion, you may have RA. Please make sure you visit your doctor to rule out the RA possibility.

Andrographis paniculata, also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herb has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients includediterpene lactones, such as: neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.

In the study to reaffirm the Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Wall ex Nees (Acanthaceae) anti-inflammatory effects, attributed to the main constituent andrographolide which is proposed as an alternative in the treatment of autoimmune disease, researchers at the Universidad Austral de Chile conducted an investigation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) effects on the tablets (Paractin) made of an extract of A. paniculata (30% total andrographolides).

Tablets (Paractin) made by an extract of A. paniculata (30% total andrographolides) were administered three times a day for 14 weeks, after a 2-week washout period to 60 patients with active RA.

The intensity of joint pain decreased in the active vs placebo group at the end of treatment.

According to the returned questionnaire from the patients, application of the tablets demonstrated a significant diminishing for week in tender joint,, number of swollen joints, total grade of swollen joint -0.27 95%CI (-0.48 to -0.07; p = 0.010), number of tender joints, total grade of swollen joints, total grade of tender joints and HAQ associated with a reduction of rheumatoid factor, IgA, and C4

Dr, Burgos RA, the lead author at the end of the study said, "A. paniculata could be a useful "natural complement" in the treatment of AR".

In the perspective of the pseudo-tumoral expansion of fibroblast-like synoviocytes, a hallmark of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), researchers found that andrographolide treatment of rheumatoid arthritis fibroblast-like synoviocytes (RAFLSs) isolated from RA patients decreased the proliferation of RAFLSs in a dose-dependent manner.

Andrographolide also showed a G0/G1 cell cycle arrest in RAFLSs, according to the cell cycle analysis using propidium iodide (PI) staining.

Injection Andrographolide also demonstrated the increase of the expression of cell-cycle inhibitors p21, a regulator of cell cycle progression at G1 and S phase. and p27 in the G1 phase of the cell cycle and a concomitant reduction of cyclin-dependent kinase 4, a cell division protein in a dose-dependent.

Moreover, andrographolide-treated RAFLSs displayed a significant decrease in the Bcl-2/Bax ratio compared to untreated cells.

Dr, Yan J said, at the final report, "andrographolide exerts anti-growth and pro-apoptotic effects on RAFLSs, thus may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of RA".

Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis processed high amounts of bioactive compound Andrographolide may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for treatment of RA.
