#@ Green Tea (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), The Potential Lewy Body Disease Inhibitor, Scientists Discover

Green tea may have potential effect in the regulation of Lewy bodies against the onset of Lewy body disease, some scientists suggested.

Lewy body disease is one of a common form of neurodegenerative diseases occurring in the elderly characterized by mutation of the Lewy bodies as a result of the abnormal structure of Lewy bodies, building up in areas of the brain.

Lewy bodies, mainly composed of α-synuclein (αS), are pathological hallmarks of Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies.

People with building up of Lewy body in most cases also have Alzheimer's disease, causing reduced mental ability, including symptoms of visual hallucinations, and changes in alertness and attention. 

Some patients with the condition are also experiencing symptoms of rigid muscles, slow movement, and tremors, the hallmarks of the Parkinson's disease.

Researchers do not know why the elderly with the same health conditions and family history, some are susceptible to the early onset of the disease while others do not. However, they do know that certain risk factors such as old age, family history, and male gender are associated with the onset of Lewy body disease.

Some researchers also believe due to the severity of brain damage, patients with the condition also express certain mental instability including aggressive behavior, depression and worsening of parkinsonian-like symptoms.

Genetic alternation such as SNCA or SNCB gene mutations is also found in patients with the disease.

According to the My Virtual Medical Center, Lewy bodies is the third most frequent cause of dementia in older adults and accounts for 15–35% of all dementias


Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

In the study of N-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)- and 6-hydroxydopamine-induced neurodegeneration in rodents and nonhuman primates with the increased presence of iron and alpha-synuclein in the SNpc, researchers found that application of green tea catechin polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate exerts a significant effect as an iron chelators in protecting the brain against neurotoxins by inhibiting the increased presence of iron and alpha-synuclein in the SNpc.

Pretreatment of green tea on N-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)- and 6-hydroxydopamine-induced neurodegeneration in rodents was also found to demonstrate the high levels of antioxidant activity in preventing the accumulation of iron and alpha-synuclein in SNpc.

Dr. Mandel S, the lead author suggested that a combination of iron chelation and antioxidant therapy might be a significant approach to neuroprotection in PD and other neurodegenerative diseases, including Lewy body disease.

Furthermore, in the concerns of the primary α-synucleinopathgenic expression in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies and multiple system atrophy, researchers at the Lanzhou University, launched an investigation to examine whether green tea (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) can inhibit the fibrillation of αS.

EGCG effect on the transient 'active' oligomers (AOs),


At the final report, researchers found that
* EGCG facilitates the fibril formation and thus eliminating the toxic AOs.

* Also, EGCG suppresses the membrane disrupting radiating amyloid fibril formation on the surface of liposomal membranes, thus protecting the cells against the initiation of AOs.

Dr. Yang JE , the lead wrote in the summary," EGCG has been suggested to exhibit its protective effect against the αS-mediated cytotoxicity by not only producing the off-pathway 'compact' oligomers but also facilitating the conversion of 'active' oligomers into amyloid fibrils".

Taken altogether, green tea and its bioactive compound EGCG may have a potential effect in treating Lewy body disease by preventing the overexpression of α-synuclein (αS) accumulation in the brain by either inhibiting the oligomers or converting the oligomers into amyloid fibrils.

Scientists may have found a natural whole food for treatment of type II diabetes without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested,

Type II diabetes is a chronic acquired medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

The disease is either caused by cells in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

"Dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle are the major factors for rapidly rising incidence of DM among developing countries. In type 2 diabetics, recently, the elevated HbA1c level has also been considered as one of the leading risk factors for developing microvascular and macrovascular complications" and "Improvement in the elevated HbA1c level can be achieved through diet management; thus, the patients could be prevented from developing the diabetes complications. Awareness about diabetes complications and consequent improvement in dietary knowledge, attitude, and practices lead to better control of the disease".

These results suggested a change in diet and lifestyle are the most effective method in the management of type II diabetes.

* A. vera leaf pulp extract showed hypoglycemic activity on IDDM and NIDDM rats, the effect being enhanced for type II diabetes in comparison with glibenclamide.

* On the contrary, A. vera leaf gel extract showed hyperglycaemic activity on NIDDM rats.

These results suggested, pulps of Aloe vera leaves devoid of the gel could be useful in the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

Taken all together Aloe Vera may be considered an adjunct therapy for treatment in patients non-insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes.

However, due to the limitation of the above studies, additional data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food Aloe vera during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Aloe vera anti-diabetes possibilities.

Herbal catnip was found to process certain chemical compounds which stimulate the immune function against microbial organisms in the acute and chronic phase of infection, some scientists suggested.

In human, anti-microbial activity is a natural reaction in which the macrophages of the immune system in the response to the early phase of infection stimulate the production of inflammatory cytokines which have a unique in killing off foreign pathogens before they can cause of harm to the body.

Ingredients
Besides, having the major constituent of terpenoid nepetalactone, the herb also contains α-Pinene, β-Pinene, Cyclohexen-1-yl-methyl ketone, Triplal, Thymol, Nepetalactone, Nepetalactone, etc.

In the finding of the natural alternatives in replacement of traditional antibiotics with no side effects, researchers at the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences launched an evaluation to examine the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil derived from herbal Catnip.

Chemical 4a-α, 7-α, 7a-β-nepetalactone (55-58%), and 4a-α, 7-β, 7a-α-nepetalactone (30-31.2%) isolated from the essential oil were effective in exerting their antimicrobial activity against all tested bacteria at concentrations of 0.125-4 μL/mL and the growth of Candida species at a concentration less than 1 μL/mL. 

The essential oil chemical constituent nepetalactones are also found to process anti antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal and antioxidant activities.

Terpenenes or terpenoids found abundant in Catnip are active against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. According to the 1977 report, 60% of essential oil derivatives derived from terpenoids demonstrated an inhibition of fungi and while only 30% inhibited bacteria.

Furthermore, the extract of catnip also displayed an inhibitory activity on growth, enzyme production and adhesion of some bacteria. 

Moreover, the essential oil extract from Catnip also exhibited the anti bactericidal activity for all of the above-mentioned Gram-positive bacteria at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 8 μL/mL.

All of the Gram-negative bacteria were susceptible to the Catnip oils at concentrations of 0.25–32 μL/mL

The essential oil of Catnip from different growth stages exhibited bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities against the Shigella and Salmonella species at concentrations of 0.25–2 μL/mL and 0.5–8 μL/mL, respectively.

Additionally, the essential oil inhibited the growth of the standard species of Aspergillus at a concentration of 0.25–1 μL/mL.

In the comparison of the antibacterial effect of some herbs, including Catnip, researchers found that Lavender oil is more effective in the exhibited antibacterial ability than the Catnip essential oil, probably based on the concept of synergistic values of essential oil components.

Nevertheless, only a few published reports are available regarding the antimicrobial effects of the catnip EOs, especially against food-borne and resistant microorganisms, Dr. Zomorodian K, the lead author suggested.

Taken altogether, the essential oil derived from catnip may be considered an adjunct therapy for treatment of microbial infection.

Today, mainstream medicine antibiotics have become less effective as many viral and bacteria have developed resistance to the application due to being overused.

Secondary metabolites of plants processed antimicrobial properties with no side effects have been promoted by some companies as natural alternatives to antibiotics. The general public must be aware that many of these compounds are currently available as unregulated botanical preparations.

#@Herbal Cinnamon, The Natural Alternative for Treatment of Infertility, Scientists Say

Scientists may have found a kitchen spice which processes some underline mechanisms in enhancing the rate of fertility, some studies suggested.

Infertility is a condition characterized by the inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse or the cannot carry the pregnancy full term.

The syndrome affects over 5 million couples alone in the US.  Because of the unawareness of treatments, only 10% seek help from professionals.

According to the statistic, about 35% of infertility is caused by the male's inability to fertilize. 35% is caused by the female's inability to conceive, 10% attributes to both, and 10 % is considered a failure with an unknown cause.

Dr, Romero Ramos R, in the study [Risk factors associated to female infertility], wrote, "There were 6 factors with statistical significance: advanced age (p < 0.001), elevated body mass index (p < 0.001), age of onset of sexual activity (p < 0.001), prior pelvic surgeries (p < 0.001), and presence of stress (p < 0.001). Other risk factors such as smoking, chemical, and radiological treatments, pelvic inflammatory disease, exercise, contraceptive use, alcohol intake, drugs, coffee, solvents, glue, and insecticides, were not significant".

In male infertility, according to a case-control study conducted by Dr. Buiatti E and colleagues, about coffee and alcohol consumption, smoking habits, x-ray exposure, usual sitting posture, drug consumption, other nonoccupational risk factors, socioeconomic status, education level, and occupational history are some of prevalent risk factors associated to male infertility.

And, the high relative risk was associated with (a) occupation in the radioelectric industry, (b) nonsedentary clerical workers, (c) clerical work in the typographic industry, and (d) occupation in the textile industry,

Cinnamon, a kitchen spice in many cultures, may be best known for its effect in reducing the levels of blood glucose in diabetics and lipid peroxidation through its antioxidant activity(4).

In a total of  45 women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, randomized, 26 women completed 3 months of the study, and 17 women completed the entire 6 months of the study, researchers showed,
* Application of cinnamon exerts a positive effect in improvement of menstrual cyclicity associated with luteal phase progesterone levels and ovulatory menses without altering insulin resistance or serum androgen levels

* Cinnamaldehyde, a major chemical compound of cinnamon enhances fertility through selectively induced progesterone production and inhibits production of testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone in human adrenal cells.

* Further differentiation, suggested that cinnamon extract not only reduces insulin resistance in vitro and in vivo by increasing phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase activity with insulin stimulation in the insulin signaling pathway but also improves menstrual cyclicity in female induced PCOs.

Moreover, in the infertile male rat study conducted by Fırat University, long-term cinnamon bark oil(CPO) improved the effect on testicular oxidant-antioxidant balance and sperm quality with significantly decreasing the abnormal sperm rate and apoptotic germ cell count.

Interestingly, in the study to investigate the likelihood of detrimental effects of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ) on the male reproductive system through oxidative stress mechanism and also protective effects of cinnamon bark oil (CBO), researchers at the Firat University conducted an experiment including 28 healthy male Wistar rats.

The tested subjects were divided into four groups, seven rats in each. Group 1 received only olive oil daily; group 2 was treated with 100 mg kg(-1) CBO daily; group 3 was treated with only 0.25 ml kg(-1) CCl4 weekly, and group 4 received weekly CCl4 + daily CBO. 

All administrations were made by the intragastric catheter and maintained for 10 weeks. 

At the final report, researchers suggested that 
* CCl4 administration caused significant decreases in body and reproductive organ weights, testicular catalase (CAT) activity, sperm motility and concentration, and significant increases in lipid peroxidation (LPO) level, abnormal sperm rate and apoptotic index along with some histopathological damages compared with the control group.

* Pretreatment of CBO following the administration of CCl4 significant improvements in absolute weights of testis and epididymis, all sperm quality parameters, LPO level, apoptotic index, and testicular histopathological structure Cl4, compared to the group given CCl4 only.

Taken altogether, Cinnamon may be effective in promoting fertility in both sexes through enhancing the menstrual cycle in women and improving sperm performance in men.

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in improving the health of vision, particularly in elderly, some scientists suggested.

In compared to visual health, vision impairment is a condition of functional limitation of the eye or visual system. In severe cases, the condition can lead to complete loss of vision.

In older people, vision loss is a major healthcare problem. Approximately one person in three has some form of vision-reducing eye disease by the age of 65.

Most The most common causes of vision loss among the elderly are associated with age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, and diabetic retinopathy.

Dr. J R Evans, the lead author, and colleagues in the study" Causes of visual impairment in people aged 75 years and older in Britain: an add-on study to the MRC Trial of Assessment and Management of Older People in the Community" wrote, "...with review of the general practice medical notes where the main cause was attributed in 65% of cases with multiple conditions".

These result suggested that the causes of visual impairment were not contributed by a single factor but a combination of several influencers.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

In a study to explore the association between the consumption of fruits and vegetables and the presence of glaucoma researchers launched an investigation including a sample of 1,155 women located in multiple centers in the United States.

Participants were diagnosed by glaucoma specialists in at least one eye by assessing optic nerve head photographs and 76-point suprathreshold screening visual fields.

Consumption of fruits and vegetables was assessed using the Block Food Frequency Questionnaire.

At the final report, researchers suggested that 
* The odds of glaucoma risk were decreased by 69% in women who consumed at least one serving per month of green collards and kale compared with those who consumed fewer than one serving per month.

* in women who consumed more than two servings per week of carrots compared with those who consumed fewer than one serving per week, and by 64%.

These results suggested that carrot consumption have a significant effect on reducing glaucoma risk compared to green collards and kale.

Additionally, in the study including 662 older African-American women to explore the association between the consumption of fruits and vegetables and the presence of glaucoma, researchers showed that after taking a careful view of the assessment by 2 glaucoma specialists reviewed of photographs and visual fields and the returned Food Frequency Questionnaire assessed food consumption.
* Glaucoma was diagnosed in at least 1 eye in 77 subjects (13%)

* Women who ate 3 or more servings/day of fruits/fruit juices were 79%

* Higher consumption of carrots (P = .061) and spinach (P = .094) showed a protective trend against glaucoma

Vegetables and fruits containing a high amount of vitamin A, vitamin C, α-carotene and β-carotene and lutein/zeaxanthin showed a significant effect in reducing the rike of glaucoma.

Dr. Giaconi JA, the lead author said, "Higher intake of certain fruits and vegetables high in vitamins A and C and carotenoids may be associated with a decreased likelihood of glaucoma in older African-American women".

In the clarification of the question of should older people eat more carrots or at least increase their carotene intake to prevent loss of night vision?, researchers a the Australian National University, launched a study including participants in the Blue Mountains Eye Study with a question about their ability to see in the dark. 

After examining the returned Nutrient and food intake estimated from a food frequency questionnaire, researchers found that
* Increased consumption of carrots, but no other food high in beta-carotene was associated with significantly increased reporting of poor night vision among women

* Carrot intake may protect against difficulty in seeing at night.

Taken altogether, carrots with abundant vitamin A and C may be considered a functional food in reducing the risk of age-related glaucoma and improving the vision health in elderly.

Scientists may have found a food and plant processed antipyretic activity compared to those of acetaminophen in patients with fever, some studies suggested.

Fever is a natural reaction caused by the production of pro inflammatory cytokines of the immune system in protecting our body damage and injury against foreign pathogens during the acute phase of infection.

According to medical literature, a person is not considered to have a significant fever until the temperature is above 100.4 F (38.0 C).

Fennel extract applied alone showed antipyretic activity against hyperpyrexia in mice, induced by S.C. administration of 2 mL/100 g of a 20% aqueous suspension of brewer's yeast.
As an antipyretic agent, ethanolic extract of F. vulgare fruit showed a moderate antipyretic activity that was statistically significant after 30 and 90 min.

These results showed that herbal coded medicine at a dose of 240mg/kg and fennel extract have marked an antipyretic activity in animal models and this strongly supports the ethnopharmacological uses of medicinal plants.

Application of AN at doses 125 and 250mg/kg once a day for seven days prevented the changes caused by the APAP overdose.

Additionally, researchers also discovered, AN infection prevents the overexpression of proinflammatory mediators such as NO, TNF, IL-1α, MIP-1α, and MCP-1 and induced the up-regulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10), thus reducing the onset of fever.

 Taken all together, there is no doubt that fennel may be considered a functional food for treatment of inflammatory induced fever.

# Green tea Polyphenols, the Potential Candidate for Treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Scientists Find

Scientists may have found a beverage which processes the ability to protect the central nervous system against the onset of spinal muscular atrophy, some studies suggested.
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare neuromuscular disorder affected the part of the nervous system that controls voluntary muscle movement due to loss of motor neurons and progressive muscle wasting.

The disease is caused by a mutation in the SMN1 gene on chromosome 5. In some cases, the disease is also associated with a mutation in an X-chromosome gene called UBE1 causes X-linked SMA.

Depending on the disease severity, patients with SMA may experience symptoms of muscle weakness and decreased muscle tone,  limited mobility, breathing problem, problems eating and swallowing, delayed gross motor skill and the spontaneous tongue movements.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

In the investigation to reexamine, the laboratory-based evidence suggest that purified polyphenol compounds such as resveratrol, found naturally in red grapes, epigallocatechin galate from green tea and curcumin from turmeric, might be useful for the treatment of various inherited neuromuscular diseases, including spinal muscular atrophy, researchers at the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital launched an investigation to evaluate the scientific evidence related to the known molecular effects that these polyphenols have on different models of inherited neuromuscular disease, with particular attention to problems with the validity of in vitro evidence. 

Application of polyphenols demonstrated the molecular effects on different models of inherited neuromuscular disease,

Polyphenols, in vitro, exerts a significant effect on cells through metal ion chelation in cell-culture media.

Dr. Fuller HR, the lead author after taking into account co and confounders said, "Polyphenols could be an attractive approach to therapy for the inherited neuromuscular disease, especially since they may be safer to use on young children, compared with some of the other drug candidates".

Additionally, in the assessment of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major component of green tea polyphenols effect on neuroprotection, researchers at The Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University found that injection of EGCG exerts substantial protection of motor neuron by regulating glutamate level in organotypic culture of rat spinal cord.

Further analysis suggested EGCG blocks the glutamate excitotoxicity caused by threohydroxyaspartate, an inhibitor of glutamate transporter not by its antioxidant activity but other unknown mechanisms. As another antioxidant could not regulate the glutamate level under the same condition in another study.

These results suggested that EGCG may be a potential therapeutic candidate for neurodegenerative diseases involving glutamate excitotoxicity, including SMA.

Taken altogether, green tea purified polyphenols may be considered an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of various inherited neuromuscular diseases, including spinal muscular atrophy

Asparagus May be considered an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of liver cancer, some scientists suggested.age

Liver cancer is a medical condition in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in the liver tissue.

At the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the liver to infect other healthy tissue and organ via lymph or blood.

Secondary liver cancer or metastatic liver disease. are cancer started in another part of the body and spread to the liver.

Most common cancers are likely to spread to the liver including colorectal, lung and breast cancers.

The exact causes p[rimary liver cancer are unknown. Researchers also can not understand that people with the same health conditions, gender and family history, some are susceptible to the onset of liver cancer while others do not.

However, researchers do know that certain risk factors are associated with the development of the disease, such as long-term alcohol abuse, or chronic infection associated with hepatitis B and C and cirrhosis.

Some genetic mutations and liver damaged by birth defects are also elevating the risk of liver cancer.

Dr. Rao CV. the lead author in the study "Frequently mutated genes/pathways and genomic instability as prevention targets in liver cancer" wrote, "About 80-90% of liver cancers are hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and recent cancer genome sequencing studies have revealed frequently mutated genes in HCC".

These types of mutation are most likely are the results of oxidative stress in facilitating the accumulation of DNA damage and further mutations.

In the finding of natural ingredients with potential in preventing the onset of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), one of the most aggressive malignancies in the world, researchers conducted a study to examine the anticancer effects of the deproteinized asparagus polysaccharide on the hepatocellular carcinoma cells, using the in vitro and in vivo experimental model. 

The assessment of the experimental data suggested that the selected ingredient exert an effective inhibitor on cell growth in vitro and in vivo and potent selective cytotoxicity against human hepatocellular carcinoma Hep3B and HepG2 cells.

Further analysis showed that deproteinized asparagus polysaccharide potently induce cell apoptosis and G2/M cell cycle arrest in the more sensitive Hep3B and HepG2 cell lines.

Deproteinized asparagus polysaccharide potentiated the effects of mitomycin, a chemo drug both in vitro and in vivo.

The efficacy of the deproteinized asparagus polysaccharide was attributed to the ingredients in modulating the expression of Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase-3 apoptotic-associated pathways.

In other words, the deproteinized asparagus polysaccharide induce liver cancer cell apoptosis through numbers of cell death pathways.

* A vegetable-based dietary pattern was inversely associated with liver cancer; hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for the lowest to highest quartiles were: 1.00; 0.98 (0.71-1.35); 0.93 (0.67-1.29); and 0.58 (0.40-0.84).

* The association was stronger among participants with a history of the chronic liver disease

* High intakes of celery, mushrooms, allium vegetables, composite vegetables (including asparagus lettuce and garland chrysanthemum), legumes and legume products were associated with reduced liver cancer risk.

The findings suggested that adding some portions of vegetables, including asparagus, are associated to reduce the risk of liver cancer, regardless of patients health condiiton.

Taken all together, there is no doubt that asparagus and its bioactive compound may be considered an adjunct therapy for the prevention and combined with conventional medicine for treatment of liver cancer.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus anti-cancer possibilities.

In severe cases, the disease can cause a substantial reduction of the quality of life.

As of today, the treatment of neurodegenerative disease in conventional medicine is limited only to the symptoms. None of the currently available therapies slow or stop the continued loss of neurons.

All participants were assessed on mental task performance and physiological activities under conditions of physical or psychological stress in humans.

Caffeine exerted a similar but smaller inhibition of the blood-pressure increases caused by the mental tasks.

Also, according to the Profile of Mood States after the mental tasks, L-theanine reduced the Tension-Anxiety scores as compared with placebo intake.

These results suggested that the application of green tea L-theanine not only reduces anxiety but also attenuates the increase in the levels of stress.

Taken altogether, there is no doubt that moderate consumption of green tea or tea with abundant of L-theanine processes a positive and profound effect in enhancing brain function in many aspects. However, excessive green tea and tea drinking may cause overstimulation.

Scientists may have found a whole food or herb with the potential to induce the death of cancer cells, some studies found.

Cell death is a natural process to warrant the normal development of cells and the cell cycle maturation and to maintain the normal function body in the optimization state.

However, some microorganisms were found to process the activity in triggering cell death for their own survival.

Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a function of the immune system evolved as a rapid and irreversible process to efficiently eliminate dysfunctional cells, including cells that were damaged of DNA, infected.

Cancer apoptosis is an action that causes cancer cells to die off with or without affecting the nearby cells.

Some herbal medicine such as fennel was showed to induce the function of overexpression of levels of free radical in initiating cytotoxic effect in killing the target cancer cells while protecting the healthy cells through its antioxidant activity.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of genus Foeniculum, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

In the study to investigated several herbal plants ethanol extracts from fruits of their apoptotic activity from fruits of seven species of Apiaceae family, namely,Eryngium planum, Archangelica officinalis, Pastinaca sativa, Heracleum sibiricum, Carum carvi,Foeniculum vulgare, and Levisticum officinale against ML-1—human acute myeloblastic leukaemia, J-45.01—human acute T cell leukaemia, EOL—human eosinophilic leukaemia, HL-60—human Caucasian promyelocytic leukaemia, 1301—human T cell leukaemia lymphoblast, C-8166—human T cell leukaemia, U-266B1—human myeloma, WICL—human Caucasian normal B cell, and H-9—human T cell, researchers found that
The ethanol extract from fruit F. vulgare showed the highest mortality in Trypan blue test for J45 cell line with 4% of viable cells and for a C8166 cell line with 100% of mortality.

* The extract also showed the highest viability in other clines, HL60 with 60%, EOLwith 48%, and ML1 with 42%. The normal cell line H9 and WICL showed 35% and 25% of viable cells, respectively.

Furthermore, in the reaffirm the use of fennel in traditional cancer treatment, researchers at the King Abdulaziz University (KAU), launched a study to demonstrate the anti-proliferative and apoptotic effect of chloroform fraction of fennel (CFF) in MCF-7 cells.

Application of fennel showed to inhibit the growth against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-237 in time- and concentration-dependent manners.

Fennel induced a apoptosis of around 49% at the doses of 0.5 mg/ml of CFF and PI-stained cells showed the G1 phase cell cycle arrest, according to the Annexin V/PI-assay.

More importantly, application of fennel also was found to reduce the elevated levels of ROS, disrupted mitochondrial membrane and increased levels of caspase-9 & caspase-3 and DNA fragmentation in the promoted of MCF-7 cells death.experienment

Dr. Syed FQ, the lead author in the final assessment of the experiment said, "(The results) revealed the proliferation inhibition, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction effect of CFF, which may help in exploring the novel anti-cancer drug for therapeutic implications".

Moreover, in the study to examine whether anethole, a major bioactive compound found in fennel, anise, and camphor process anti-metastatic and apoptotic effects on highly-metastatic HT-1080 human fibrosarcoma tumor cells, researchers found that
* Despite weak cytotoxicity against HT-1080 cells, anethole inhibited the adhesion to Matrigel and invasion of HT-1080 cells in a dose-dependent manner.

* Anethole was also able to down-regulate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 with anti-apoptotic function and up-regulate the gene expression of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 with apoptotic function.

Finally, anethole significantly decreased mRNA expression of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), but not uPA receptor (uPAR) in the facilitated cancer cell death.

Taken all together, fennel alone or its extracts and bioactive compound anethole may be considered adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for treatment of cancers
