Healthyfood Cranberry Prevents and Reduces the Risk of Colitis, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.

Most cases of colitis are caused by infection, such as bacteria like C. difficile, viruses, and parasites, and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (UC).

However, according to the study by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, depending on the causes, colitis can be classified into microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis, and Behcet's colitis.

The most common symptoms of colitis are abdominal pain and diarrhea, bleeding per rectum, distention with bloody diarrhea, abdominal bloating and flatulence, and changes in bowel habits.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of elevated liver enzymes, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, severe peripheral arthralgias, and chronic watery diarrhea.

Believe it or not, 55 percent of patients stated that UC symptoms over the past year had affected their quality of life, while physicians and nurses estimated that 35% to 37% of patients would have a reduced quality of life.

Conventionally, treatments of colitis are total depending on the type and severity of the condition. For example, in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Self-care at home through home Telemanagement, Web-guided therapy, and pain management are the most common approach accompanied by biological therapy, if necessary.

Some researchers suggested, the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades may be the leading cause of colitis in patients with IBD.

Dr. Jimmy K. Limdi wrote, "The parallelism between “westernization” and particularly high dietary intakes of total fat (particularly animal fats, ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), milk fats), refined sugars, meat and lower intakes of fruit and vegetables, implicates diet in the great risk of developing IBD".

And, "Diet may influence intestinal inflammation through several biologically plausible mechanisms including dietary antigen presentation, alterations in the gut microbiome, the mucosal immune system and epithelial barrier function among others".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry is cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine for the treatment of wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of IBD, researchers examined the effects of cranberry products on preventing dextran sulfate sodium-induced murine colitis.

According to the tested differentiation, both cranberry extract and dried cranberries-fed groups had significant activity against the disease index.

However, dried cranberries were more effective in preventing colitis compared to cranberry extract.

Moreover, both cranberry applications also showed a significant effect on preventing the shortening of colon length.

Biomarkers associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as colonic myeloperoxidase activity were attenuated in animals fed dried cranberries compared to the controls.

Additionally, dried cranberries also inhibited much better results against the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines caused by the injection of dextran sulfate sodium, compared to the controls.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "The current report suggests that cranberries can be applied to prevent and reduce the symptoms of IBD".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colitis in IBD patients, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthyfood GreenBeans Maybe Potent Against Prostate Cancer, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with abnormal cell growth in a specific tissue of an organ, due to the alternation of DNA.

A primary tumor or original tumor is a tumor of the original site where it first arose and the tumor progression began and proceeded to yield a cancerous mass.

Cancer cells that grow to their tumor size, can invade and kill their neighbor cells by producing abnormal or excessive signaling chemicals (hormones or cytokines) which upset the normal chemical balance of the body and alter the metabolic pathways, leading to disordered and violent cellular behavior.

At the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic.

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous due to the alternation of the cell's DNA.

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the Physical (rectum) exams.

Primary prostate cancer normally starts from the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue and gradually spreads to the deeper part of the prostate.

At the early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms, However, at the advanced stage, prostate cancer can induce symptoms of blood in the urine, frequent urination, and urinary difficulty.

The cancer cells at this stage can also travel a distance away from the prostate to invade other healthy tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis tumors.

According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate for local and regional (stage 0 and 1) stages of prostate cancer is nearly 100%.

Therefore, men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history and increase in age and inherited gene changes should have their prostate gland checked annually.

Believe it or not, more than 80% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older.

Dr. Anton Stangelberger,, the lead scientist at the joint study led by the University of Vienna, wrote, "
Due to increasing life expectancy and the introduction of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening, a rising number of elderly men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Besides PSA serum levels and Gleason score, age is considered to be a key prognostic factor in terms of treatment decisions".

And, " Not every man who is diagnosed with prostate cancer will develop the clinically significant disease. This has led to the concept of expectant management for screen-detected, small-volume, low-grade disease, with the intention of providing therapy for those men with disease progression.".

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding a potent compound that processes chemopreventive activity, researchers examined BN999, a fermentation product of soybean, black bean, and green bean mixture in the inhibition of the growth of human prostate cancer.

The application of the mixed product showed a significant effect on inhibiting the growth of prostate adenocarcinoma PC-3 cells without causing obvious side effects.

Furthermore, BN999 induced apoptosis in colon cancer cells without affecting the healthy cells.

Based on the findings, researchers after taking into account co and confounder wrote, "these data suggest that BN999 has the potential to be used as cancer chemoprevention or therapeutic agent".
Taken altogether, green beans used combined with fermentation products of soybean, the black bean may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene Inhibits Metabolic Diseases in Obese

By Kyle J. Norton

A metabolic profile is a tool to diagnose metabolic disease.

A metabolic disease is a group of medical conditions that disrupt normal cell metabolism in converting food to energy.

The most common causes of metabolic disease are genetic prepositions. However, people with the mutated gene may remain healthy for years.

Interestingly, cellular stress and family history have been found to be major causes of the initiation of the symptoms of metabolic disease, epidemiologically.

According to statistics, metabolic disease is uncommon in the US. Metabolic disorders affect approximately 1 in 1,000 individuals.

As of today, there is no effective treatment of metabolic disease. Some children with metabolic disease diagnosed at an early age may respond very well to therapy. However, many do not respond well to therapy and cause severe problems, despite the early diagnosis.

Obesity is a medical and chronic condition caused by long-term excessive body fat accumulated. Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), people who have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

The formula of the BMI indexBMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. However,
in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight, including over 650 million were obese worldwide.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of metabolic disease, researchers compared the effect of lycopene and tomato powder on obesity-associated disorders in an animal model.

Male C57BL/J6 mice selected to the study were assigned into four groups to receive: control diet (CD), high-fat diet (HFD), a high-fat diet supplemented with lycopene or with tomato powder (TP) for 12 weeks.

In HFD experimental mice, lycopene and TP supplementation significantly reduced adiposity index, organ, and relative organ weights, serum triglycerides, free fatty acids, 8-iso-prostaglandin GF2α, and improved glucose homeostasis, without affecting the total body weight.

Furthermore, lycopene and TP supplementation protected the liver cell against HFD-induced hepatosteatosis and hypertrophy of adipose tissues.

Moreover, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by HFD also were reduced observed by the decreased mRNA expression in the liver and in the epididymal adipose tissue.

Additionally, levels of phosphorylation of IκB, and p65 associated pro-inflammatory responses were also decreased through the applications' anti-inflammatory activity.

Collectively, researchers said, "These results suggest that lycopene or TP supplementation display similar beneficial health effects that could be particularly relevant in the context of nutritional approaches to fight obesity-associated pathologies".

Taken altogether, lycopene and tomato may be considered remedies for the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Be Potent Against Mild to Moderate Depression

By Kyle J. Norton

Depression is a normal response as part of our daily lives such as the loss of s job, the death of a loved one, and illness.

Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing at an alarming rate.

Depression is a mental health disorder that can affect the way you eat, sleep, and the way you feel about yourself.

The mild case of depression can be treated successfully by a variety of self-care techniques. Others require the treatment of medication, such as antidepressant medications and psychotherapy that help to reduce and sometimes eliminate the symptoms of depression.

Depression can be classified into 3 types, including
*Reactive depression
Reactive depression is the reaction caused by emotional swings affecting anyone at one time in his and her life, such as the death of a loved one, loss of financial stability, or chronic diseases.

People suffering from reactive depression may lose interest in doing things that provide pleasure. These people generally still function in daily activity normally. Most people suffering from reactive depression may see the symptoms disappear gradually over time, some may require support from others or take antidepressant medications.

* Physical depression
This type of depression is caused by chemicals imbalance in the brain as resulting from chronic illness such as hormone imbalance, immune disorder or nutritional deficiency.

People suffering from physical depression may lose interest or pleasure in almost everything and generally have a negative impact on every function in daily life.

* Manic depression
This is a severe type of physical depression. In medical terms, manic depression is characterized by wide mood swings with periods of both depressions, mania, and a variety of other significant symptoms not present in other types of depression such as the fluctuation between periods of extreme energy and vivacity with those of complete hopelessness.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of depression, researchers examined the effects of a combined intervention of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and psychoeducation on mild to moderate depression in workers compared to psychoeducation alone.

The double-blinded, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial that compared the intervention group, receiving omega-3 fatty acids 15 × 300 mg capsules containing 500 mg docosahexaenoic acid and 1000 mg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) per day, with a control group, receiving a placebo supplement for 12 weeks.

According to the results after 12 weeks, the Beck Depression Inventory®-II (BDI-II) scores were significantly lower in the placebo and omega-3 groups, compared to their respective baseline scores.

However, after 12 weeks of treatment, there is no significant difference between both groups with respect to changes in the BDI-II scores.

In other words, a combination of omega-3 fatty acids and psychoeducation and psychoeducation alone can contribute to the improvement of symptoms in people with mild to moderate depression.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids used a combination with psychoeducation may be considered therapy for the treatment of depression, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) Processes Anti-Inflammatory Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system in which the white blood cells of the first line of defense try to protect the body by destroying the foreign pathogens which try to enter the body through wound or tissue damage.

Inflammatory cytokines induce the Inflammatory processes in the body, triggered by the body's own immune system.

During the acute phase of infection, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines may cause damage to nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase of infection as the immune system successfully kills off all invaders in a brief battle.

Some researchers suggested the immune system has evolved to protect our body over thousands of years with an aim to kill off all pathogens within a period in the range of 3 to 8 weeks. Otherwise, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic inflammation.

In other words, chronic inflammation happens when the immune response lingers, causing low-grade inflammation. Chronic inflammation over time may damage the body tissues and organs.

In some cases, the infection may be latent in which the pathogen remains within the body for a long time without producing any symptoms, such as the hepatitis virus.

Diseases associated with chronic inflammation include cancer, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.

Anti-inflammatory activity is the use of a substance or treatment for the treatment of od inflammation or swelling.

Anti-inflammatory protein in the body displays anti-inflammatory properties against the risk of autoimmune diseases and immune pathologies such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, or organ rejection.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, scientists examined the anti-inflammatory activity of taraxacum officinale (TO) filtered methanol extracts in LPS-stimulated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

According to the results from the assays on HUVECs pretreated with 100 μg/ml TO for 1 h and then incubated with 1 μg/ml LPS for 24 h, TO filtered methanol extracts dramatically inhibited LPS-induced endothelial cell-monocyte interactions by reducing vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 associated with cellular inflammation found in various immunological disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, transplant rejection.

Furthermore, TO filtered methanol extracts also inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory proteins found in inflammatory subjects.

In other words, TO suppressed the LPS-induced nuclear translocation of NF-κB, without affecting the pro-inflammatory cytokine MAPK activation.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Our findings demonstrated that methanol extracts of TO could attenuate LPS-induced endothelial cell activation by inhibiting the NF-κB pathway. These results indicate the potential clinical benefits and applications of TO for the prevention of vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis".

Taken altogether, dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammatory diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene Isolated From Tomatoes Lowers the Levels of Hypercholesterolemia in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver produces bile that not only aids the digestive function in food absorption but also builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormone.

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

In other words, the condition is caused by either overexpression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary in moderate amount source plays a critical to aid digestive function in absorbing nutrients, build strong cell membranes, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US. In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol, and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Similar to high blood pressure, people with hypercholesterolemia are asymptomatic. Patients with familial hyper cholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the role of lycopene (L) on proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type-9 against hypercholesterolemia.

Where Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK-9) is a serine protease of the proprotein convertase (PC) family that has been found to affect the levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).

In HFD rats, lycopene treatment significantly inhibited the levels of low-density lipoprotein by lowering the expression of hepatic PCSK-9 and HMG-CoA Reductase (or 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA reductase or HMGR and increasing the expression of hepatic LDL-R with function to remove LDL.

Furthermore, lycopene treatment also ameliorated inflammation induced by the expression PCSK-9 by suppressing the inflammatory markers.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Based on the above results, it can be concluded that lycopene exhibits potent hypolipidemic activities via molecular mechanisms that are either identical (HMGR inhibition) or distinct from that of statins".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypercholesterolemia, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids, the Natural Non-Opioid Analgesic Drug

By Kyle J. Norton

Non-opioid analgesics are types of medicine used to disrupt the production of prostaglandin associated with pain and inflammation, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), selective COX-2 inhibitors, and acetaminophen. NSAIDs inhibit cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2).

Pain relief is an action to remove pain, distress, oppression by blocking the pain-transmitting information from nerve cells to the brain neurons.

Inflammation is a systematic immune response during the acute phase of infection.

Macrophages, one the lymphocytes and the first-line defense of the immune system after sensing the damage of localized tissue, stimulate the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site to protect the body against invasion of potential pathogens.

Acute pain is any pain that lasts less than 6 months. Most cases of acute pain are due to physical damage such as soft tissue damage of a sprained ankle or a paper cut. Acute pain is relatively more sharp and severe.

On the other hand, there are many risk factors associated with chronic pain. Some chronic pains can be caused by single factors such as diseases involved nerve damage to injuries that fail to heal properly. Others may be results from several factors including diseases associated with normal aging.

Acute inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to protect the human body against harmful stimuli and pathogens.

Acute inflammation usually receded after a few days or weeks depending on the size and damage. However, if all pathogens were not eradicated after 3 to 8 weeks, the immune system will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a leading cause of chronic illness.

The most common symptoms of acute inflammation occurred with a short period of time such as hours is pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of pain, researchers examined the mechanism of pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs) on an active and time-dependent biosynthetic shift from pro-inflammatory to pro-resolution mediators,

SPMs are biosynthesized from the omega-3 fatty acids arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

According to the tested analysis, isolated SPMs show a strong efficacy at very low doses to relieve rheumatic diseases and neuropathic pain, in experimental models showing no side effects compared to biological agents, opioids, corticoids, and gabapentinoids.

Furthermore, SPMs also act as an immunoresolvents to induce long-lasting analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, including blocking pain.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "therefore, (pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs)) emerge as a new class of non-immunosuppressive and non-opioid analgesic drugs".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a non-opioid analgesic drugs for the prevention and treatment of diseases,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.

The stomach formed part of the digestive system located between the esophagus and the small intestine, is a muscular, hollow and an important organ of the digestive tract.

The stomach plays a critical role to assist the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.

Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells in the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

According to the statistics, most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in older people. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68. The risk of developing gastric/stomach cancer in a man lifetime is about 1 in 95.

The exact causes of gastric/stomach cancer are unidentified. However, researchers do no certain risk factors are associated with an increased risk of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that people with chronic gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), a condition caused by the frequent backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, is the most likely to develop the disease.

Other diseases associated with the early onset of gastric cancer are obesity and smoking.

According to the Universidad de Salamanca, bacteria and viruses, including Helicobacter pylori are strongly associated with chronic gastritis, clinical syndromes, precancerous lesions, and pathogenesis of gastric cancer development.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the inhibitory effect of sulforaphane (SFN), the major component extracted from broccoli/broccoli sprouts on gastric cancer.

According to the tested analysis, in vitro, the tumorsphere formation associated with tumor progression and recurrence and the expression levels of gastric cancer stem cells (CSCs) markers were significantly decreased by the SFN treatment.

Furthermore, SFN exerted strong inhibitory effects by suppressing proliferation and inducing apoptosis in gastric CSCs.

Moreover, SFN inhibited the activation of Sonic Hh, a key pathway in maintaining the stemness of gastric CSCs.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "these data revealed that SFN could be a potent natural compound targeting gastric CSCs via suppression of Sonic Hh pathway, which might be a promising agent for gastric cancer intervention".

Taken altogether, broccoli processed a high amount of SFN may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Beta-Sitosterol, the Potential Anti Multiple Myeloma Supplement

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by irregular cell growth that starts in the tissue of specific organs.

Most cases of cancer overtime after penetrating into deeper layers of the affected organs, the oversize tumor can sometimes spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood, leading to secondary metastasis.

Pre-cancer is a medical condition that likely develops into cancer if untreated.

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a precancerous condition and the most common plasma cell disorder.

In other words, monoclonal myeloma gammopathies is a precancerous condition that may cause myeloma, a cancer of white blood cell disorder.

Multiple myelomas (Myeloma) is a type of cancer originated from plasma cells in the bone marrow that produces the white blood cells which are normally responsible for the production of antibodies to protect our body against infection.

Over time, multiple myeloma can lead to the accumulation of cancer cells in the bone marrow, overcrowding out healthy blood cells.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, multiple myeloma is a relatively uncommon cancer. In the United States, the lifetime risk of getting multiple myeloma is 1 in 132 (0.76%).

Every year, approximately, 32,110 new cases are diagnosed, including 18,130 in men and 13,980 in women. The disease also causes the death of 12,960 Americans including 6,990 in men and 5,970 in women.

The Grades of multiple myeloma are depending on the tendency of spreading. Low-grade cancers usually grow more slowly and are less likely to spread while high-grade cancer indicates otherwise.

The exact causes of MS are unknown. Epidemiologically, the increase of age (If you are between 50 and 70 years old you are at higher risk to develop Multiple Myeloma), gender (men are more likely to develop multiple myeloma than women), race (Cancer tends to affects blacks more often than whites), previous multiple myeloma, exposed to certain chemicals, family history, and radiation.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the anti-cancer effects of beta-sitosterol (BS), a plant-derived sterol on multiple myeloma U266 cells.

According to the experimental analysis, Beta-sitosterol induced cytotoxicity increased sub-G1 apoptotic population and activated caspase associated with the pro-apoptotic activity and blocked the cancer cell in the energetic converting process in U266 cells.

Furthermore, Beta-sitosterol promoted ROS expression by activating the enzymes involved in free radical production in U266 cells.

Moreover, beta-sitosterol attenuated the induction of new blood vessels by the cancer cells to promote proliferation and suppressed pathways associated with suppression of cancer cell apoptosis and tumor progression.

Additionally, beta-sitosterol also suppressed the proteins associated with DNA repair. sub-G1 accumulation, proliferation, and pro-oncogenic function in U266 cells.

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of multiple myeloma, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids May Be a Potent Anti Cancer Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Compared to all cancers, lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancer in the US.

Believe it or not, 1/4 of cancers death are due to lung cancer.

Depending on types of cancer, people with cancers may experience general and specific symptoms.

The American Cancer Society wrote, "Cancer may also cause symptoms like fever, extreme tiredness (fatigue), or weight loss. Because cancer cells use up much of the body’s energy supply, or they may release substances that change the way the body makes energy from food. Cancer can also cause the immune system to react in ways that produce these signs and symptoms" and " Sometimes, cancer cells release substances into the bloodstream that cause symptoms that are not usually linked to cancer. For example, some cancers of the pancreas can release substances that cause blood clots in veins of the legs".

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of invasive tumors, researchers examined the Omega 3 fatty acid therapeutic role against certain types of cancer.

According to the results from differentiation, omega-3 FAs showed a strong improvement in chemo drug effects and tolerability.

Furthermore, the application of omega 3 fatty acids suppressed the protein and pathway associated with cell division and apoptosis and modulated the factors involved in free radical production.

Moreover, omega 3 fatty acids enhanced the activity of novel anti-inflammatory lipid mediators against the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to induce cell DNA damage.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of cancers, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Tocopherols Protect the Electrical Activity in the Brain Against Seizure

By Kyle J. Norton

Epilepsy is a condition of a neurological disorder caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain inducing sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance and convulsions.

Anticonvulsant is a function to control seizures (convulsions) or stop an ongoing series of seizures.

A seizure is a sudden, abnormal electrical disturbance in the brain. Epidemiological studies suggested seizures can change in behavior, movements or feelings, and in levels of consciousness.

The hormone melatonin is approved only for the treatment of jet-lag syndrome and some types of insomnia, clinical data also suggest that it is effective in the adjunctive therapy of osteoporosis, cataract, sepsis, neurodegenerative diseases, hypertension, and even cancer.

In humans, melatonin may attenuate seizures, and it is most effective in the treatment of juvenile intractable epilepsy.

Its additional benefits include improved physical, emotional, cognitive, and social functions. On the other hand, melatonin has been shown to induce electroencephalographic abnormalities in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy and increase seizure activity in neurologically disabled children.

The hormone showed very low toxicity in clinical practice, according to the study by the Department of Pathophysiology, Medical University, PL 20-090 Lublin, Jaczewskiego 8, Poland(22).

The most common symptoms of seizure, signs, and symptoms can range from mild to severe and vary depending on the type of seizure, according to the Mayo clinic, including
* Temporary confusion

* A staring spell

* Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs

* Loss of consciousness or awareness

* Cognitive or emotional symptoms, such as fear, anxiety or deja vu

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of epilepsy, researchers examined the
inhibitory action of antioxidants (ascorbic acid or alpha-tocopherol) on seizures and brain damage induced by pilocarpine in rats.

According to the results of ascorbic acid (250 or 500 mg/kg, i.p.) and alpha-tocopherol (200 or 400 mg/kg, i.p.) on the behavior and brain lesions on seizures induced by pilocarpine (400 mg/kg, i.p., P400 model), Ascorbic acid or alpha-tocopherol injections prior to pilocarpine suppressed behavioral seizure episodes.

Furthermore, the antioxidant administration inhibited free radicals that cause brain damage induced by seizures.

In the P400 model, ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol significantly decreased cerebral damage percentage.

More precisely, antioxidant compounds can exert neuroprotective effects associated with the inhibition of free radical production.

Based on the results, researchers said, " These results highlighted the promising therapeutic potential of ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol in treatments for neurodegenerative diseases".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for prevention and treatment of seizure, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Fennel Normalizes Blood Cholesterol in Vivo and Human Study With No Side Effects, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural whole food with the potential to treat hyperlipidemia without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested.

Cholesterol, the natural ingredient produced in the liver plays an important role in stimulating the production of vitamin D, steroid hormones, and bile acids and maintaining healthy cell membranes.
Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by abnormally elevated levels of cholesterol in the plasma of the blood.

The causes of hyperlipidemia are unknown. However, an unhealthy diet with a lot of unsaturated fat and trans fat is associated with the early onset of the disease. Foods such as cheese egg yolks fried and processed foods and red meat have found to increase blood cholesterol, long-term intake of such foods in great amount have been found to increase the risk of hyperlipidemia, epidemiological studies found.

The Beni-Suef University, in the study to determine the development of obesity in response to a high-fat diet (HFD) an Egyptian Herbal mixture formulation (HMF), including fennel, showed, "feeding HFD diet significantly increased final body weight, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, & LDL concentration compared with controls, while significantly decreasing HD".

Hyperlipidemia is a lifelong condition that is treatable.

Dr. Robert B. Kelly at the Fairview Hospital/Cleveland Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program in the article "The most beneficial changes result from reducing intake of saturated and trans fats; increasing intake of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats; fortifying foods with plant stanols or sterols; isocalorically adding tree nuts to the diet; consuming one or two alcoholic drinks per day; and adopting a Portfolio, Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, or low-fat diet. Smaller but still beneficial effects result from reducing intake of dietary cholesterol, increasing intake of soluble fiber and soy protein, and eating fatty marine fish or taking marine-derived omega-3 fatty acid supplements".
Therefore by changing the diet pattern and engaging in regular physical exercise are the fundamental
options that not only can prevent the onset of the condition, particularly in people who are at a higher risk of hyperlipidemia, and also treat high blood cholesterol in patients who already have the condition.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of a genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS.

In the study to examine the effect of the aqueous extract of fennel in the reduced risk of hyperlipidemia, researchers conducted an experiment in Triton WR-1339 induced hyperlipidemia in mice.

Mice treated with the extract at different doses display a significant reduction of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and apolipoprotein-B decreased by 40%, 23%, 61%, and 61%, respectively.

Further analysis, the application also increased the levels of HDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1 by 85% and 58%, respectively

Also according to the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences which also conducted a study to assess the effects of Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) on lipid profiles, in sixty eligible postmenopausal women, randomly assigned into the fennel and placebo groups.

Measurement of total blood cholesterol, cholesterol fractions, and triglycerides was tested at the baseline, and after a three-month follow-up.

At the end of 3 months, blood profiled withdrawn from the women suggested
* There are no significant difference in triglyceride (P = 0.679), total cholesterol (P = 0.103), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C; P = 0.146) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; P = 0.266) levels between the two groups.

* Fennel treated group demonstrates a significant borderline improvement for HDL-C and triglyceride, compared to the placebo group.

Additional differentiation of the process of the double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled trial, researchers suggested that longer durations, higher doses, and larger sample sizes are recommended to validate the results.

These results indicated that intake of foods for the treatment of conditions or diseases must be on a long-term basis. The times of 3 months may be too short for foods to exert their potential effects.

Taken all together, fennel may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia. Intake of fennel should be increased gradually for the food to reach its antihyperlipidemic stage, a longer duration may be needed. In other words, please be patient.
