#Herbal #Garlic Extracts Inhibit Pathways Associated with Abnormal Hemostasis and Thrombosis, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating the common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotics, etc.

Several sulfur-containing compounds, isolated from garlic may be very effective in the inhibition of platelet aggregation, a recent study suggested.

Antiplatelet activity is the effect of decreased platelet aggregation and inhibited thrombus formation.

According to Ochanomizu University, sulfur-containing compounds in garlic not only inhibited arachidonic acid metabolism but also suppressed aggregation in association with the function of the platelet plasma membrane.

In vitro, garlic mechanisms of action may be comparable to that of the clinically used drug clopidogrel, as the herb exerts antiaggregatory effects. Garlic extracts are acting by inhibiting the ADP pathway, an important physiological agonist of normal hemostasis and thrombosis.

Dr. MacDonald JA lead researcher said, " The ability of an aromatic disulfide to inhibit platelet aggregation can be enhanced by appending an electron-withdrawing group to the aromatic ring. The results presented to establish that the aromatic thiosulfonate is a very effective inhibitor of platelet aggregation"

Besides the sulfur compound, Ajoene, (E, Z)-4,5,9-trithiadodeca-1,6,11-triene 9-oxide, isolated from alcoholic extracts of garlic reversibly inhibited platelet aggregation through platelet deposition on severely damaged vessel wall but not affected platelet adhesion.
In fact, in the comparison of the effect of the Garlic Pill with Plavix on Platelet Aggregation and Bleeding Time, groups treated with 1200 or 2400 mg garlic inhibited platelet aggregation substantially, through an increased time of bleeding.

The use of garlic supplements should be taken with care for patients who are taking Anticoagulants as garlic may increase risk of bleeding. Also, patients with ulcers should consult with their doctors.

#Ginger and #Turmeric Mixture Are Associated with the Treatment of RA #Rheumatoid Arthritis Severity and Complications, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may have a potential effect on the prevention and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, some scientists suggested.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of arthritis and chronic low-grade inflammatory disease associated with the immune system that mistakenly attacks the joint tissue.

According to the statistic, in the US over 1.3 million Americans were affected by rheumatoid arthritis compared to 1% of the worldwide population.

As of today, researchers do not know what triggers the immune system to make antibodies that attack the joint tissue. Why are people with the same health condition in the same family, some are susceptible to the onset of the condition while others do not.

However, they do know the increase in age, family history, gender, environment, smoking, and obesity are some prevalent risk factors of RA.

In fact, lifestyle is a preventable risk factor that has been found to elevate the risk of RA in the Western world.

Dr.Kathleen Chang, the lead scientist, in the study "Smoking and Rheumatoid Arthritis" clearly suggested that by following a healthy lifestyle, RA may be preventable.

The Doctor's team continued " Recent developments have shed light on the pathophysiology of RA in smokers, including oxidative stress, inflammation, autoantibody formation, and epigenetic changes".

And "The association of smoking and the development of RA have been demonstrated through epidemiologic studies, as well as through in vivo and animal models of RA.

These results indicated a significant change in RA risk just by quitting cigarette smoking.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
On seeking alternative therapy for patients with chronic, painful diseases, a research team at the Basic Clin Pharmacol Toxicol investigated the potential of hydroalcoholic extract of Zingiber officinale rhizomes (Z. officinale extract) in ameliorating inflammatory process in rat rheumatoid arthritis.

Application of Z. officinale extract at doses higher than 50 mg/kg/day intraperitoneally showed a significant effect in boosting the immune activity in rats with rheumatoid arthritis.

Continued administration for 26 days of Z. officinale extract can ameliorate the clinical scores, disease incidence, joint temperature and swelling, and cartilage destruction.

The results were attributed to the extract effect in inhibiting the production of proinflammatory cytokines which play a critical role in facilitating the onset of low-grade inflammation.

The extract also reduced the immune system in the production of an antibody against the joint tissue.

Moreover, Z. officinale extract at the dose of 200 mg/kg/day was superior compared to those of 2 mg/kg/day injection of indomethacin in most of the measured parameters.

Dr. Fouda AM, in the final report, said, "These observations might make Z. officinale extract a good alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for patients with rheumatoid arthritis".

In arthritis induced by a single intradermal injection of 0.1 mL of Complete Freund's adjuvant (containing heat-killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis) into the palmar surface of the left hind paw conducted by the King Faisal University, Al-Hufof, researchers examine the anti-rheumatoid arthritis in rats randomly assigned to receive orally and daily (for 28 consecutive days) distilled water as vehicle, indomethacin (1.0 mg/kg body weight), or GTaq (200 or 400 mg/kg body weight, ginger-turmeric rhizomes mixture ) from the day of arthritis induction.

Application of GTaq (especially the high dose) was more effective (4.2-38.4% higher, P < 0.05-0.001) than those of indomethacin (a non-steroidal/anti-inflammatory drug) in alleviating the loss in body weight gain, the histopathological changes in ankle joints, blood leukocytosis and thrombocytosis, iron deficiency anemia, serum hypoalbuminemia and globulinemia.

Rats treated the Gtaq also showed a reduction of the impairment of kidney functions and the risks for cardiovascular disease.

Further analysis suggested that the protective effects of GTaq are attributed to increasing food intake and decreasing systemic inflammation and antioxidant activity in the inhibition of oxidative stress.

The finding supported the use of a ginger-turmeric rhizomes mixture for the treatment against RA severity and complications.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of ginger anti-rheumatoid arthritis possibilities.

#Avocado Oil Inhibits Parameters Associated with #HighBloodCholesterol, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Avocado may process certain bioactive compounds with the function of inhibiting the abnormal levels of blood cholesterol in the bloodstream, some scientists suggested.

Cholesterol produced by the liver or intake from food sources plays an important role in building the cell membrane walls and stimulating the production of steroid hormones and aiding the digestive tract in absorbing the nutrients for our body needs.

However, a prolonged period of overexpression of abnormal blood cholesterol in the bloodstream can cause plaque building up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.

Depending on the choice of diet, your risk of high blood cholesterol can be increased or decreased.

People who follow the Western diet high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed food, and low in fruits and vegetables and whole grains may have a substantially increased risk of abnormally high blood cholesterol.

According to the article "Western Diet and Heart Risk", the author wrote, "“Western diets cause a third of heart attack deaths worldwide,” the Daily Mail reports. Western-style diets high in meat, fat, dairy, and salt put people at higher risk of a heart attack. According to the newspaper, a study has found that poor diet is responsible for 30% of the risk of heart disease".

These results suggested that regardless of the levels of blood cholesterol today, by changing to a healthy diet and lifestyle with moderate exercise, you are at a lower risk of high blood cholesterol in the future (weeks or months, depending on the levels of blood cholesterol today).

The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 (low-density lipoprotein) to 1 (high-density lipoprotein).

If your ratio is lower than 4, you are considered to have a healthy blood-cholesterol ratio.

Avocado is a commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world.

It is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and is native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.

Researchers in the examination of traditionally consumed fruit avocado, use for the treatment of fat lowering capacity launched an experiment to evaluate the effect of hydro-alcoholic fruit extract of P. Americana (HAEPA) on the level of blood lipids, glutathione, lipid peroxidation products, adiponectin, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ expressions.

The study includes Male Sprague Dawley rats divided into four groups: groups 1 and 2 were fed normal rat chow (5% fat) and groups 3 and 4 were fed HFD (23% fat) for a period of 14 weeks. In addition, groups 2 and 4 rats were administered orally with 100 mg/kg body weight of HAEPA from the third week.

The rat group treated with additional HAEPA showed a significantly decreased body mass index (BMI), total fat pad mass, and adiposity index, compared to HFD-fed rats.

The LDL and lipid peroxidation levels of the HFD+HAEPA group were significantly lower compared to the HFD group.

Furthermore, Levels of reduced glutathione, an antioxidant enzyme, adiponectin, a protein hormone involved in regulating glucose levels and fatty acid breakdown. mRNA expression of adiponectin, PPAR-γ, and protein expression of PPAR-γ in mediating the expression of fat-specific genes and in activating the program of adipocyte differentiation was found to be increased in the HFD+HAEPA group than in the HFD group.

The findings suggested that HAEPA exhibits antihyperlipidemic activity by increasing the mRNA expression of adiponectin and PPAR-γ, which reduces the risk of hyperlipidemia and obesity.

In a study to examine the avocado oil administration effect on biochemical markers of cardiovascular risk profile in rats with metabolic changes induced by sucrose ingestion 25 rats were divided into five groups: a control group (CG; basic diet), a sick group (MC; basic diet plus 30% sucrose solution), and three other groups (MCao, MCac, and MCas; basic diet plus 30% sucrose solution plus olive oil and avocado oil extracted by centrifugation or using solvent, resp.), researchers found that
* Avocado oil reduces TG, VLDL, and LDL levels, in the LDL case significantly so, without affecting HDL levels.

* Avocado oil exerted a potential effect similar to olive oil in myocardial injury biochemical indicators.

* Avocado oil decreased hs-CRP levels, indicating that inflammatory processes were partially reversed.

Dr. Carvajal-Zarrabal O, the lead author wrote in the final paper, "avocado oil supplementation has a positive health outcome because it reduces inflammatory events and produces positive changes in the biochemical indicators ".

Taken altogether, avocado may be considered functional food for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol without inducing side effects.

#Bromelain, in the Form of Nanoparticles (NPs) Inhibits the Genes and Proteins Associated with the Risk of Skin Cancer In Vitro

Kyle J. Norton

Skin cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the skin tissues, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of skin cancer in the US are associated with prolong-period of sun exposure. In other words, UV rays that damage the skin have been the main culprit that causes the onset of skin cancer.

Believe it or not, according to the statistics, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US. one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

Every day, approximately 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer due to a misunderstanding of the health benefits and risks of sun and tanning exposure.

Most common symptoms at the early stage, are a large brownish spot with darker speckles, a mole that changes in color, size, or feel or that bleeds, a small lesion with an irregular border, and portions that appear red, pink, and white, blue or blue-black.

There are 3 major types of skin cancer, including* Basal cell cancer
It is the most common type of skin cancer associated with the abnormal growth of the cells in the lowest layer of the epidermis. Cancer rarely spreads and kills but can cause significant destruction and disfigurement to the affected skin area, accounting for more than 90% of all skin cancer in the U.S.

* Squamous cell cancer
It arises from the uncontrolled multiplication of transformed malignant cells in the middle layer of the epidermis.

* Melanoma
Melanoma is less common compared to other skin cancer caused by the malignancy of melanocytes, the cell that produced dark pigment for your skin.

Some researchers suggested that by seeking shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM. covering yourself with proper sunglasses, clothing, and hat, and using sun protective cream, particularly in avoidance of tanning and UV tanning beds, most types of skin cancer are preventable

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of skin cancer, researchers examined the bromelain (BL) effect in the form of nanoparticles (NPs) based delivery systems on skin cancer cells.

The formulated NPs with a mean particle size of 130.4 ± 8.81 nm exhibited sustained release of BL by observation of the analysis.

According to the tested assays, BL-loaded poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) NPs enhanced anti-tumor effects compared to free BL.

In the tumorigenesis mice model, NPs reduced the average number of tumors by 2.3 folds), delayed tumorigenesis by 2 weeks), and inhibited the percent tumorigenesis by 4 folds.

Furthermore, the administration of NPs also exerted a significant effect on reducing the percent mortality rate and the average tumor volume.

More precisely, NPs demonstrated anti-cancer cell efficacy was attributed to their capability in modulating the expression of pro-apoptotic (P53, Bax) and anti-apoptotic (Bcl2) proteins.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "developed NPs formulation could be used to improve the efficacy of chemotherapy by exerting chemo-preventive effects against induced carcinogenesis at lower dosages".

Additionally, in another mouse skin tumorigenesis model, bromelain not only exerted a similar effect to the aforementioned study it also reduced tumor volume up to a tune of approximately 65%.

In this case, bromelain induced cancer cells apoptosis by stimulating the expression of proteins associated with tumor-suppressive and pro-apoptotic genes, inhibiting the gene involved in anti-apoptosis.

Taken together, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of skin cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Bakkenolide Isolated Herbal #Butterbur and Its #Extract Exhibit A Cytotoxic Effect Against the Onset of #Cancers, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a medicinal remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells grow and multiply in disordered and uncontrollable ways in our body, due to the change of cellular DNA.

Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of the organ. At the 0 stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, most patients do not experience any symptoms.

However, at the later stage of the tumor progression, if undetected, the large size of the tumor can suppress and break the nearby small blood vessel, leading to internal bleeding and severe if the tumor also suppresses the nearby nerve cells.

Primary cancer cells at this advanced stage can also travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Symptoms of cancer at this stage are totally dependent on the affected area, including vomiting blood in oral and lung cancer blood in the urine in bladder cancer. hoarseness in throat cancer. ... Persistent lumps in the breast and lymph cancer and indigestion or difficulty swallowing in digestive-related cancers.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of cancers, but they do know, according to epidemiological studies that age, alcohol cancer, chronic Inflammation, genetic proposition, unhealthy diet, change of hormones use of immunosuppression, infectious agents, obesity, exposure to radiation and sunlight, use of tobacco are most common risk factors associated with the onset of some specific cancers.

Some researchers in the investigation of weakened immune function in the risk of cancer suggested people with a weakened immune system lost the function
1) to stimulate the T cells' inactivation of the B cells in the production of p53, a tumor suppressor gene, or antioncogene that inhibits the cancer cell proliferation and tumor development and

2) to stimulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to kill off the DNA alternated damage cells in the acute phase of inflammation.

In other words, if you have a strong immune system, your risk of cancer is substantially lower compared to the general public.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetlands, riversides, forests, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Northern Hemisphere. the herbal plant has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including the stomach, bile ducts, duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petition and iso-S-petition, etc.

The Shandong University at Weihai, on finding a natural compound for the treatment of cancer with no side effects examined a new bakkenolide isolated from Butterbur anti-cancer effects.

The new bakkenolide exerted a potent cytotoxic activity against a number of cultured human cancer cells, including human cervical carcinoma (HeLa), human breast cancer (MCF-7), and murine Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cell lines.

According to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service in vitro methanol extract from the leaves in the rat liver epithelial cells. significantly decreased spontaneous beta-galactosidase activity and beta-galactosidase activity induced by a mutagen.

Elevated beta-galactosidase (beta-gal) enzyme activity is an indication of the tumor and metastatic expression.

All doses of the extract (0.08-100 mg/plate) decreased the reversion frequency induced by benzo (alpha)pyrene (BaP) in S. Typhimurium TA 98 of the Salmonella typhimurium.

In an additional analysis of the experiment, PJ extract showed greater cytotoxic effects on the human stomach, colon, and uterus cancer cells than on other cancer cell types and normal rat liver epithelial cells.

Furthermore, PJ significantly increased the number of gap junction proteins associated with tumor suppression in a dose-dependent manner.

Dr. the lead scientist said, "Based on these findings, PJ is suggested to contain antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic compounds".

Taken together, herbal Butterbur may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cancers.

#Herbal #Bilberry Inhibits #Obesity by Suppressing Visceral Fat Accumulation and Hyperglycemia, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a herbal remedy that visceral fat accumulation in obesity, according to studies.

Visceral fat is a layer of fat that surrounds the organs. Overexpression of visceral fat has been found to promote insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease, and inflammation.

Visceral fat obesity is associated with 90% of patients with ischemic heart disease. In obese, accumulation of visceral fat is predominant in the intra-abdominal cavity.

However, in non-obese subjects, visceral fat accumulation is correlated with glucose intolerance, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension.

Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated to an extent that impacts personal health. The hallmark of obesity is attenuated metabolism and structural cell changes in the obese fat observed by reducing metabolic activity.

According to the statistics provided by the National Center for Health Statistics (2015-2016), in the US, approximately 39.8% of adults aged 20 and over were obese accompanied by another 31.8% overweight.

Obesity rates have increased for all population groups in the US over the last several decades, coincidently with the periods in the promotion of the Western diet.

Dr. Maximilian Tremmel, the lead scientist in the investigation of the economic burden of obesity wrote, "The rising prevalence of obesity represents an important public health issue. An assessment of its costs may be useful in providing recommendations for policy and decision-makers" and "there was great variety in the included obesity-related diseases and complications among the studies".

And, "There is an urgent need for public health measures to prevent obesity in order to save societal resources. Moreover, international consensus is required on standardized methods to calculate the cost of obesity to improve homogeneity and comparability".

The findings strongly suggested that widespread obesity has caused significant pressure on the public health care system and an impact on the financial and economic burden.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural remedy for the treatment of obesity, researchers examined the effects of anthocyanin-rich phytochemicals found in Aronia fruits (aronia phytochemicals) and bilberry in high-fat-diet-induced dietary obese rats.

During the study, bilberry phytochemicals-supplemented rats showed a significant reduction of total visceral fat mass but to a lesser extent compared to aronia phytochemicals.

Similarly, perirenal and epididymal adipose tissue mass in rats fed aronia phytochemicals was by far greater than the bilberry phytochemicals group.

Bilberry lowered the mesenteric adipose tissue mass.

Bilberry also exerted the equivalently inhibited increases in plasma triglyceride levels, compared to that of aronia phytochemicals with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) of 1.50 mg/mL.

The results suggest that anthocyanin-rich phytochemicals in aronia fruits and bilberry may have a potency for the treatment of obesity by suppressing visceral fat accumulation and hyperglycemia.

In order to reveal more information about bilberry's anti-obesity properties, researchers evaluated a flavonoid-rich supplement (329 mg/d) on total urine phenolics and shifts in plasma metabolites in overweight/obese female adults.

Participants (N = 103, 18-65 y, BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) included in the study were randomized to flavonoid (F) or placebo (P) groups for 12 weeks with blood and 24 h urine samples collected prestudy and after 4 and 12 weeks in a parallel design.
The supplement included vitamin C, wild bilberry fruit extract, green tea leaf extract, quercetin, caffeine, and omega-3 fatty acids.

According to the urinary assay, in the 4 weeks, urine total phenolics increased 24% in F versus P with similar changes at 12 weeks.

In of F demonstrated the shifts in 63 biochemicals compared to P with 70% from the lipid and xenobiotics super-pathways, according to the examination of metabolomics assay.

Where metabolite profile is reflective of metabolic processes, including pathophysiological changes characteristic of obesity-related complications.

The findings suggested that flavonoid-rich supplements may have a strong effect on the change of metabolome which is the sum of all the small-molecule chemicals found in a biological sample, often the blood plasma, and considered a measurement of obesity and health beyond BMI.

Taken together, bilberry used alone or combined with other agents may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of obesity, pending to the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Tomato Protects Diabetes Against Complications Through Its Antioxidant Activity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is an imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.
In other words, diseases associated with oxidative stress such as cardiovascular diseases [CVDs], chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer are results of the prolonged period of overexpression free radicals compared to reduced levels of antioxidants.

Free radicals are unstable molecules with a single electron in the outer ring. Therefore, in order to become stable, free radicals readily steal or donate an electron from other molecules, leading to a free radical cascade that cannot be stopped until all outer ring electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit oxidation.

Diabetes is a chronic condition of insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream, caused either by the gradual died-off of the beta cells in the pancreas or insulin receptors clogged-up by cholesterol.

In our body, free radicals induced by cell metabolism for the body to function normally are inhibited by the antioxidant either produced by the body or the intake of antioxidant chemical compounds from dietary sources.

Free radicals can enter our body from environmental factors, such as the air we breathe, and the foods we eat.

Some researchers suggested that the reduced levels of antioxidants against the overexpression of free radicals most likely occurred in people with a weakened immune system such as the elderly due to aging.

Dr. Viviana I Pérez, the lead scientist said, "Currently, the Oxidative Stress (or Free Radical) Theory of Aging is the most popular explanation of how aging occurs at the molecular level".

And, "While data from studies in invertebrates (e.g., C. elegans and Drosophila) and rodents show a correlation between increased lifespan and resistance to oxidative stress (and in some cases reduced oxidative damage to macromolecules), direct evidence showing that alterations in oxidative damage/stress play a role in aging".

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diabetes with no side effects, researchers examined the beneficial effect of tomatoes in diabetics.

Participants in the type-II diabetic group (n=40) and age-matched control group (n=50 are included in the study.

Before treatment, the type-II diabetic group showed significantly lower levels of antioxidant enzymes and a very high lipid peroxidation rate compared to the control group.

According to the analysis of the short term supplementation, tomatoes (cooked) showed a significant improvement in antioxidant enzyme levels and decreased lipid peroxidation rate in the diabetic group for a period of 30 days.

Once again, in a total of 90 subjects including type 2 diabetic group (n = 40) and an age-matched control group (n = 50), researchers once against investigated the anti-diabetes activity of lycopene.

Patients with type 2 diabetes have significantly lower levels of antioxidant enzymes and very high lipid peroxidation, as well as higher levels of lipid profile and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), compared to controls before the application of lycopene.

Long-term tomato supplementation in diabetes mellitus showed a significant improvement in the levels of antioxidant enzymes and decreased lipid peroxidation rate (p < 0.001), with no effect on lipid profile and glycated hemoglobin HbA1c levels.

In other words, long-term tomato injection protects diabetics against complications associated with abnormally high levels of high blood glucose and lipid, through its antioxidant activity.

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of complications caused by oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Apricots Process Anti #Liver and Lung Cancer Properties, According to Researchers

Kyle J. Norton

Apricot, a functional food may be the next pharmaceutical target for the finding of an effective medicine with potential in the treatment of liver cancer, some scientists suggested.

Liver cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the liver tissue.
What causes the mutation of liver cell DNA is unknown. However, according to epidemiological studies, cancer originating from the liver is associated with livers damaged by birth defects, alcohol abuse, or chronic infection with diseases such as hepatitis B and C, and hemochromatosis.

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), is the advanced form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). are one of the major risk factors associated with significant liver damage or the increased risk of liver cancer.

An unhealthy diet pattern and lifestyle also can contribute to the early onset of liver cancer. therefore making positive lifestyle choices such as Not smoking, eating a healthy diet, and keeping physically active are some of the ways can reduce the risk of liver cancer.

The World Cancer Reserve Fund wrote," There is strong evidence that being overweight or obese is a cause of liver cancer, consuming approximately three or more alcoholic drinks a day is a cause of liver cancer, and consuming foods contaminated by aflatoxins (toxins produced by certain fungi) is a cause of liver cancer".

Men are about 3 times more likely than women to be diagnosed with the disease

According to the statistic, in the US., an estimated 30,610 men and 11,610 women will be diagnosed with primary liver cancer, causing the deaths of 20,540 men and 9,660 women.

The apricot tree is about 8–12 m tall and a trunk up to 40 cm diameter belonging to the family Rosaceae.

Apricot is classified in the family of the plum with yellow to orange, often tinged red on the side which is exposed to the sun.

Chemical constituents of apricot include
Oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic.acid, glycolipids, phospholipids, benzoic acid (I), isorhamnetin (II), quercetin (III), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (IV), isorhamnetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (V), isoquercitrin (VI), hypericin (VII) and rutin (VIII)(a) and flavonoid glycosides.

In the assessment of MK615, an anti-cancer substance extracted from the Japanese apricot, researchers at the Dokkyo University School of Medicine conducted an investigation to examine the anti-neoplastic effect of MK615 against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Observation of the assays from 2 HCC lines, HuH7 and Hep3B, were cultured with MK615 at concentrations of 600, 300, 150, and 0 microg/mL found that
* MK615 inhibited the growth of, and lysed, HuH7 and Hep3B cells in a dose-dependent manner

* MK615 decreased the population of cells in the G2/M phase, according to the Cell cycle analysis.

* MK615 suppressed the expression of the function of Aurora A. associated with cancer cell proliferation by 34.3%, 32.9%, and 54.3% at 150, 300, and 600 microg/mL MK615, respectively.

Dr. after taking into account co and confounders said, "(These results suggested that) MK615 has an anti-cancer effect against HCC lines in vitro, and the effect is exerted through inhibition of Aurora-A activity".

Furthermore, in the evaluation of the clinical effects and feasibility of administering MK615 for patients with HCC recurred in the liver 8 mo after the surgery, in a 60-year-old female with advanced HCC, researchers found that

* Radiofrequency ablation and transarterial infusion chemotherapy were performed but the recurrence was not controlled and one year after the intrahepatic recurrence, pulmonary and lymph metastasis reappeared.

* Administration of chemo drug Sorafenib was not effective.

* MK615 was administered as a final alternative therapy after informed consent was obtained from the patient.

3 months of MK615 injection exerted a significant effect in decreasing her alpha-fetoprotein level and sizes of both the lymph node and pulmonary metastases. The patient has survived for more than 17 mo after the MK615 administration

These results suggested that MK615 is effective against advanced liver cancer metastases.
Taken together, apricot may be considered a functional food for the prevention and adjunct therapy for the treatment of liver cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of the whole food apricot during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of apricot anti-liver cancer possibilities.

The Peels and Seeds #Extract in #Avocado Process Anti-Lipids, Proteins Associated with Cells DNA Damage Activity, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

In the search of natural therapy for the prevention and treatment of diseases involved oxidative stress, scientists may have found a dietary whole fruit with the efficacy compared to that of conventional medicine, according to studies.

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit free radical and stop the free radicals chain reaction.

Free radicals on the other hand are unstable and highly reactive molecules with a single or unpaired electron on the outer ring. In order to maintain the balance, free radicals are ready either to donate or intercept an electron from another stable atom, leading to a domino effect which can not be stopped until the electron is paired or inhibited by an antioxidant.

Overexpression of free radicals and suppressed levels of antioxidants cause oxidative stress, leading to the damage of cell structure, protein, and lipid and alternation of cell DNA.

Every day, the human body is bombarded by the invasion of free radicals. Some foods we eat, the polluted air we breathe, the use of toxic chemical substances, and the body metabolism all contribute to the expression of free radicals in our body.

Luckily, for a healthy individual, our body's antioxidant enzymes are good enough to maintain the balance ratio, regardless of the levels of free radicals produced.

However, for people with suppressed antioxidant enzymes in the body, dietary sources of antioxidants from fruits and vegetables can be very helpful.

Researchers at the Karolinska Institutet suggested that a high intake of fruit and vegetables is related to low oxidative stress.

Dr. Rikard Åsgård, the lead scientist said, "Fruit and vegetable intake was inversely related to oxidative stress" and " An increased intake of fruit and vegetables can, therefore, be beneficial for patients with type 2 diabetes since these patients are documented to have raised oxidative stress and inflammation".

The results clearly encouraged that people who suppress antioxidants produced by the body should add some portions of fruits and vegetables into their diet.

With an aim to find natural ingredients with significant antioxidant effects against bacterial infection in the induction of oxidative stress, researchers examine the thyl acetate, containing 70% acetone, and 70% methanol extracts of the peel, pulp, and seed from two avocadi (Persea Americana Mill) against Gram-positive bacteria.

Peels and seeds were found to possess higher amounts of phenolics and had a more intense in vitro antioxidant potential, compared to the pulp.

The efficacy of the peels and seeds against Gram-positive bacteria was associated with the rich in catechins, procyanidins, and hydroxycinnamic acids, whereas the pulp was particularly rich in hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids and procyanidins.

The results indicated that avocado displays moderate antimicrobial effects against Gram-positive bacteria.

Furthermore, with the injection of the extracts (70% acetone) from avocado peels and seeds as inhibitors of oxidative reactions in meat patties, researchers also found that avocado extracts protected meat lipids and proteins against oxidation with the effect on lipids being dependent on the avocado variety.

Moreover, in the examine the antioxidant activity of other compounds such as monounsaturated fatty acids, tocopherols, carotenes, acetogenins and sterols found in avocado researchers once again confirmed the antioxidant property by comparing the lipophilic AOC of the pulp and the fruit hydrophilic AOC.

According to the chemical assay of oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), the highest antioxidant activity of lipophilic AOC was attributed to the presence of high levels of acetogenins, compared to other compounds.

The findings showed that the presence of emulsifying agents which are soluble in both fat and water could serve as novel lipophilic antioxidants in a food matrix.

Interestingly, the University of California in the study "the effect of harvest date on nutritional compounds and antioxidant activity (AOC) in avocado (Persea Americana Mill. cv Hass) fruit", suggested that AOC in early harvested fruit after storage for 35 days was much higher antioxidant contents than that in late-harvested fruit after storage for 21 days.

Taken together, there is no doubt that whole fruit avocado processed strong antioxidant properties may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases

#Fructooligosaccharides Found in Banana Process Anti-Constipation Activity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.

Constipation is a condition of frequent and hard to pass in bowel movements. According to the right diagnosis, approximately 30 percent of the US population is experience gastrointestinal complaints every year. chronic constipation (CC) study in the adult Moscow population of 1189 randomly selected subjects, showed the statistical significance of 34.3% of subjects affected by the disease, and 16.5% had CC according to Rome III criteria. Females have a significantly higher rate of 2 symptoms of constipation(1). Fructooligosaccharides, a chemical compound found abundantly in bananas, in a study by the University of Murcia, showed to increase fecal bolus and the frequency of depositions, with a dose of 4-15 g/day given to healthy subjects(2). Unfortunately, its seeds may induce constipation,(3) especially when they are consumed on an empty stomach, according to 1SFE Medical Project, Luang Namtha(4).

#GammaLinolenicAcid Inhibits Diabetic Complications of #Neuropathy, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.
In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Most common types of diabetes are
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.
Diabetic neuropathy is a complication of patients with diabetes associated with nerve damages, ranging from pain and numbness in your legs and feet to problems with your digestive system.

Most cases of diabetic neuropathy are involved in diabetics who have a history of hyperglycemia caused by long-term high levels of glucose in the bloodstream, urinary tract, blood vessels, and heart.

Diabetic neuropathy can be classified into 4 main types,.

* Peripheral neuropathy is the most common type of diabetic neuropathy, affecting the nerves that control the feet and legs first, followed by the hands and arms.

* The autonomic neuropathy that affects the nerves that control the heart, bladder, stomach, intestines, sex organs, and eyes.

* Radiculoplexus neuropathy found mostly in older patients affects nerves that control the thighs, hips, buttocks, or legs.

* Mononeuropathy or focal neuropathy also found commonly in older patients affects the nerves that control the face, middle of the body (torso), or leg.

The exact causes of diabetic neuropathy are totally depending on the type of neuropathy. However, damage to nerves and blood vessels in the affected area has been found to induce by over time, uncontrolled high blood sugar.

Gamma-linolenic acid is a phytochemical in the group of Omega-3, 6,9 fatty acids, belongings to the class of Lipids, found abundantly in evening primrose, borage, blackcurrant, etc.

In finding a potential plant that processes anti-diabetic activity, researchers examined the effect of gamma-linolenic acid on diabetic complications of neuropathy.

A multicenter, parallel-group, double-blind, double-dummy, randomized, noninferiority joint study includes the evaluation of the efficacy and safety of γ-linolenic acid (GLA) relative to α-lipoic acid (ALA) over a 12-week treatment period in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) was conducted.

According to the results of the analysis of 100 T2DM patients between 20 and 75 years of age who had painful DPN and received either GLA (320 mg/day) and placebo or ALA (600 mg/day) and placebo for 12 weeks,* There was a significant decrease in the mean visual analog scale (VAS) and the total symptom scores (TSS). scores compared to baseline in both groups, but there were no significant differences between the groups.

* The treatment difference for the VAS (95% confidence interval [CI]) between the two groups was -0.65 (-1.526 to 0.213) and the upper bound of the 95% CI did not exceed the predefined noninferiority margin (δ₁=0.51).

* For the TSS, the treatment difference was -0.05 (-1.211 to 1.101) but the upper bound of the 95% CI crossed the noninferiority margin (δ₂=0.054).

* There were no serious adverse events associated with the treatments.

Collectively, researchers said, "GLA treatment in patients with painful DPN was noninferior to ALA in terms of reducing pain intensity measured by the VAS over 12 weeks".

Taken altogether, gamma-linolenic acid may be considered a functional food for reducing the painful diabetic neuropathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Lycopene Found in Tomatoes Reduces the Risk of #COPD and Bronchial Asthma (#BA) through Its Antioxidant Activity

Kyle J. Norton

Lung protection is an action in which substances, including herbal remedies, are used to protect the lung against injury or damage.

The lungs are a pair of organs located on either side of the chest (thorax) with a function to bring fresh oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide and other waste gases from the body.

According to the statistics provided by the Lung Association over 3 million Canadians are affected by one of five serious respiratory diseases – asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, tuberculosis (TB), and cystic fibrosis.

In 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer, representing 14% of all new cancer cases. Lung cancer caused the death of 21,100 Canadians in the same year.

The exact causes of lung disease are not identified. However, epidemiological studies suggested
being overweight, smoking, family history, and smoking are some of the most prevalent factors associated with the onset of the disease.

Most common lung diseases in North America include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and cystic fibrosis.

Asthma is a medical and chronic condition characterized by the long-term inflammation of the airways of the lungs.

The most common symptoms of asthma are episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, reversible airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm.

Asthma attack in most cases is triggered by exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens). However, genetic preposition and family history are also found in patients with asthma.

Asthma not only interferes with daily activities and also can lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Treatment of asthma is to reduce the frequent episode and severity of the attacks.

According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US, 1 in 13 people have asthma. In other words, over 26 million Americans have asthma and half of that is children.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a type of lung disease associated with long-term breathing problems and poor airflow, leading to shortness of breath and cough with sputum production.

COPD is a progressive disease and the third leading cause of death in the United States. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is the third leading cause of death in the US.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of asthma researchers examined the effects of ascorbic acid (AA), carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, α-carotene, β-carotene, and lycopene), retinol and α-tocopherol levels in patients with allergic asthma compared to healthy elderly in Japanese.

Based on the tested analysis, compared to other phytochemicals, plasma AA level was significantly lower in allergic asthma subjects than that in healthy elderly people.

Levels of plasma lycopene and total carotenoid levels and levels of antioxidant enzymes such as GSH content produced by the host were significantly lower in COPD subjects compared to those of healthy elderly people.

However, levels of plasma lycopene and total carotenoid levels showed no effects in the redox markers such as GSSG, and GSH/GSSG ratio associated with the oxidative stress in the lung tissues.

In other words, there is no difference between the redox markers such as GSSG, and GSH/GSSG ratio in both groups.

Furthermore, lycopene and total carotenoid levels did not lower the marker of the levels of urinary 8-OHdG detected between ACOS and BA subjects compared to healthy elderly people.

Increased levels of lycopene and total carotenoid levels in the body do not have a significant impact in reducing the risk of ACOS and BA

Based on the findings, researchers said, "COPD of Japanese patients may develop partly because of oxidative stress derived from a shortage of antioxidant nutrients, especially of AA and lycopene as well as GSH while this may not be the case in both ACOS and BA.".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may not be considered a remedy for the prevention of overlap syndrome (ACOS) and/or bronchial asthma (BA), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Fermented Korean #SoySauce (KS), and Mixed #SoySauce (MS) Process Strong Antioxidant Activities, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit free radicals.
Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) is a measure that assesses the antioxidant status and evaluates the antioxidant response against the free radicals produced in a patient.

Free radicals are unstable atoms with an unpair of electrons on the out ring of molecules. Therefore, in order for them to become stable, they constantly seek to donate or intercept the electron from other stable atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all unpaired electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

In spite of free radicals harmful effects, one must understand that cellular oxygen species (ROS), are necessary with a moderate amount to protect our body in the mediation of antimicrobial infection, detoxification of potentially toxic compounds, and elimination of cancerous and other life-threatening cells through cytotoxicity.
Free radicals such as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, myeloperoxidase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase and antioxidants such as glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) also act on specific oxidative pathways involving both pro-oxidant and antioxidant enzymes to maintain the healthy ratio in the body.

Normally, in a healthy individual, antioxidant enzymes produced by the liver are more than enough to counter levels of free radicals in the body. However, people with weakened immune system intake of dietary antioxidant or antioxidant supplements may be necessary.

Oxidative stress is a medical condition caused by the unbalanced ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

In fact, free radicals exist everywhere including the airs we breathe, the thing we eat and the environment we contact, particularly, cell metabolism in the body.

Epidemiologically, overexpression of free radicals has been found to induce damage to the cell, lipid, proteins, and alternation of cell DNA, leading to chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and particularly, cancer.

Fermented soy products are diverse varieties of soy food that are made from fermented soybeans, including miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-oxidative stress activity, researchers examined the relationship between in vitro antioxidant capacity of soy sauces and its impact on lipid oxidation in raw and cooked beef patties during 10 days of refrigerated storage.

According to the results of the analysis of 3 commercial soy sauces including industrially fermented soy sauce (IS), traditionally fermented Korean soy sauce (KS), and mixed soy sauce (MS),
* In vitro antioxidant capacity, KS showed the highest total phenol content, whereas IS and MS had a higher Fe2+ chelating activity than KS (P < .05).

* Heat treatment decreased total phenol content but increased Fe2+ chelating activity of soy sauces (P < .001).

* In both raw and cooked beef patties, the addition of IS or MS caused a lower 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) level than KS throughout the overall storage period (P < .05).

Collectively, researchers suggest, "the Fe2+ chelating activity of soy sauce may be one of the major mechanisms in preventing lipid oxidation in meat products".

Taken altogether, potato may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Omega3 Fatty Acids Process Anti Anxiolytic Effect, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Anxiety is a psychological and physiological state triggered by feelings of fear, worry, uneasiness, dread, etc.
The condition is a normal reaction to stress that allows a person to cope with the situation during an emotionally difficult time. But when anxiety symptoms escalate or become excessive, it can lead to anxiety disorder.

People experience anxiety differently. Some people feel a sudden moment of anxiety just a bad feeling, it comes and goes, only lasting a short time. Depending on how people cope with moments of anxiety, the events can be brief or last a few days.

However, in some persons, if anxiety does not go away, they may require treatment from related field specialists.

Some researchers suggested that anxiety disorders are conditions associated with the combination of biological, psychological, and individual factors, and the most commonly reported psychiatric conditions frequently occur as comorbid disorders.

According to the statistic, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the age of 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year.

The exact causes of anxiety disorders are debatable. However, a family history of anxiety recent or prolonged exposure to stress, and excessive consumption of stimulants such as caffeine or tobacco is associated with the onset of the disorders.

The symptoms of anxiety disorders can be psychological or physical, including difficulty concentrating and sleeping, irritability, persistent stomachaches or diarrhea, sweaty palms, shaking, and rapid heartbeat.

Other patients may also experience frequent nervousness, restlessness, or being tense feelings of danger, panic, dread rapid heart rate rapid breathing, or hyperventilation,..... you may have developed an anxiety disorder.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of psychological disorders, researchers investigated the efficacy of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for anxiety symptoms compared with controls.

The study included the research of clinical trials involved in the anxiolytic effect of omega-3 PUFAs in humans, in either placebo-controlled or non-placebo-controlled designs found 104 selected articles with 19 entered the final data extraction stage.

Based on the differentiation of the selected articles including 1203 participants with omega-3 PUFA treatment (mean age, 43.7 years; mean female proportion, 55.0%; mean omega-3 PUFA dosage, 1605.7 mg/d) and 1037 participants without omega-3 PUFA treatment (mean age, 40.6 years; mean female proportion, 55.0%), the researchers found that
* The administration of omega-3 fatty acid showed an association between clinical anxiety symptoms among participants with omega-3 PUFA treatment compared with control arms (Hedges g, 0.374; 95% CI, 0.081-0.666; P = .01).

* Furthermore, in subgroup analysis, injection of Omega 3 fatty acid showed that the association of treatment with reduced anxiety symptoms was significantly greater in subgroups with specific clinical diagnoses than in subgroups without clinical conditions.

* Moreover, The anxiolytic effect of omega-3 PUFAs was significantly better than that of controls only in subgroups with a higher dosage (at least 2000 mg/d) and not in subgroups with a lower dosage (<2000 mg/d).

In other words, omega-3 fatty acid has a strong implication in reducing anxiety symptoms in a dose-dependent manner.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the treatment of anxiety, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Potatoes Inversely Are Associated with A Reduced Risk of Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, and CardiovascularDisease #CVD

Kyle J. Norton

Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of diseases.
In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.

According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.

The most common types of chronic diseases in the Western world are cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.

Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.

Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose due to either cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Some researchers also suggested that people with certain medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. and high blood pressure is more prone to the onset of the disease.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated to some extent that impacts personal health. The hallmark of obesity is attenuated metabolism and structural cell changes in the obese fat observed by reducing metabolic activity.

Potato is the genus Solanum and belongs to the family Solanaceae. The veggie is a good source of protein and according to the statistic, the annual diet of an average global citizen is about 33 kg (72.6 Lbs) of potato. It now is growing worldwide in a suitable climate for commercial profits and health benefits, thus its consumption is extremely variable and rapidly changing.

In finding a potential plant for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, researchers evaluated the relation between intake of potatoes and risks of obesity, T2D, and CVD in apparently healthy adults.

According to the search of the databases of MEDLINE, Embase, the Web of Science, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials involved in the intervention and prospective observational studies identified a total of 13 studies, including 5 studies that were related to obesity, 7 studies that were related to T2D, and one study that was related to CVD,* The association between potatoes (not including french fries) and adiposity was neutral in 2 studies and was positive in 2 studies.

* For T2D, 2 studies showed a positive association, whereas 5 studies showed no or a negative association with intake of potatoes and T2D.

* For CVD, no association was observed.

Most importantly, French fries were positively associated with T2D and obesity in all studies.

Collectively, researchers said, "The identified studies do not provide convincing evidence to suggest an association between intake of potatoes and risks of obesity, T2D, or CVD"

And, "French fries may be associated with increased risks of obesity and T2D".

The #Herbal #Ashwagandha #RootPowders Effect on Reducing Lipid Profiles in Vivos, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary plays a critical role to aid digestive function in absorbing nutrients and fluids, build strong cell membranes, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts of cholesterol in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to hypercholesterolemia, a leading cause of heart disease, and stroke.

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

The condition is a result caused by either overexpression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

People with hypercholesterolemia at the early stage are asymptomatic. However, patients with familial hyper cholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US.

In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol. and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Sadly, only 50% of people with hypercholesterolemia are getting treatment.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In finding a potent compound for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the ashwagandha root extract's anti-hypercholesteremic effects in an animal model.

Selected hypercholesteremic male albino rats were given root powder of WS added to the diet at 0.75 and 1.5 gm/rat/day.

During the experiment, researchers found that the root powder of WS showed a strong anti-hypercholesteremic activity by significantly decreasing levels of total lipids, cholesterol, and triglycerides, in blood plasma.

Furthermore, WS also reduced the levels of cholesterol by significantly increasing plasma HDL-cholesterol levels, HMG-CoA reductase activity, and bile acid content of the liver.

Moreover, lipid-peroxidation associated with liver stress was inhibited by WS administration in hypercholesteremic animals, compared to other normal counterparts.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "It appeared that WS root powder is also effective in normal subjects for decreasing lipid profiles".

Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, pending the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study
