#Antioxidant #Lycopene Inhibits the Risk and Progression Of #EsophagealCancer, According to Scientists

By Kyle J. Norton

Esophagus, an organ in vertebrates, is the tube that leads food from the pharynx to the stomach. Esophageal cancer is a medical condition that starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the esophageal tissue caused by the alternation of cell DNA.

At the advanced stage, most cases of esophageal cancer after penetrating the wall of the esophagus tend to spread to the lymph node around the bottom of the esophagus, stomach, and chest, then to the distant parts of the body.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately 17,650 new esophageal cancer cases will be diagnosed, including 13,750 in men and 3,900 in women.

Also, in 2019, esophageal cancer will also cause the death of 16,080 Americans, including 13,020 in men and 3,060 in women.

The 5-year survival rate of people diagnosed in the local stage of esophageal cancer is 45%, much less than other cancer, including 100% of breast cancer.

2 common types of esophageal cancer are* Adenocarcinomas are the most common type of esophageal cancer in the United States, which occurred in the mucus-forming gland cells in the lower part of the esophagus.

* Squamous cancer occurs in the flat, thin cells that line the surface of the upper part of the esophagus.

Some researchers suggested that the risk of esophageal cancer can be reduced by
* Medicine
Taking medicine such as aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may reduce the risk of Esophageal cancer. Researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center suggested that aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs disrupt the pathway, slow the growth of abnormal cells and facilitate the normal process of apoptosis.

* Quit smoking and quit-heavy alcohol drinking
Heavy alcohol drinking and smoking account for over 90% of all squamous cancer.

* Avoid very hot foods
Food that is very hot can cause damage to the esophagus. Eating very hot foods for a prolonged period of time can cause an infection that leads to esophageal cancer.

* Reducing intake of fried, baked, and roasted food
Fried, baked and roasted food contains acrylamide, a potentially cancer-causing carcinogenic chemical. In the animal lab, studies showed that large exposures to acrylamide may cause health problems, including damage to the nervous system and increased risk of cancer, including esophageal cancer.

* Maintaining a healthy weight
Researchers suggested that avoiding excessive weight gain and obesity may lower your risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of esophageal cancer, researchers investigated the effect of lycopene and β-carotene on the viability of EC109 human esophageal squamous carcinoma cells.

According to the results from the tested assays, lycopene and β-carotene (5-40 µM) at a dose- and time-dependent showed a significant effect in reducing the viability of the EC109 cells.

Furthermore, lycopene and β-carotene also exhibited the enzyme expression of PPARγ associated with the inhibition of cancer migration and angiogenesis and protein p21 associated with cell cycle arrest and apoptosis regulation.

Moreover, lycopene and β-carotene also inhibited the protein associated with cell cycle division and tumor cell repopulation.

Based on the results, researchers said, " the inhibition of EC109 cell viability by lycopene and β-carotene involves PPARγ signaling pathways and the modulation of p21WAF1/CIP1, cyclin D1, and COX-2 expression".

Additionally, in the study by Zhejiang University to compare the higher intake of beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, lycopene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin reduced esophageal cancer risk, researchers found that * The pooled ORs of esophageal cancer risk are 0.58 (95% CI 0.44, 0.77), 0.81 (95% CI 0.70, 0.94), 0.75 (95% CI 0.64, 0.86), 0.80 (95% CI 0.66, 0.97), and 0.71 (95% CI 0.59, 0.87), respectively.

* Alpha-carotene, lycopene, and beta-cryptoxanthin showed protection against esophageal squamous cell cancer, and beta-carotene showed protective effects against esophageal adenocarcinoma in studies located in Europe and North America, according to the subgroup analysis.

Collectively, researchers wrote, " Alpha-carotene, lycopene, and beta-cryptoxanthin showed protection against esophageal squamous cell cancer. This meta-analysis suggested that a higher intake of carotenoids (beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, lycopene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin) is associated with a lower risk of esophageal cancer".

Taken altogether, lycopene used alone or combined with another herbal remedy may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of esophageal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Enzyme #Bromelain Inhibits the Proinflammatory Cytokine Against the Onset of Colitis, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.

Depending on the type of colitis, the most common prevalent factors found in patients with such as condition are.
* Familial history of inflammatory bowel disease (odds ratio (OR) 4.3)

* Breastfeeding (OR 2.1)

* Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccination (OR 3.6 )

* History of eczema (OR 2.1 (1-4.5))

* Disease during pregnancy (OR 8.9 (1.5-52)), and

* Bedroom sharing (OR 7.1 (1.9-27.4))

* Crohn's disease both appendectomy and tonsillectomy have positive associations. Well-established

* Smoking status

* If you are over 50, you are at increased to develop colitis.

And * Depression and psychosocial stress, according to the basis of data from the Nurses' Health Study, increase the risk for CD, but not UC, among women. Psychological factors might have been found to induce CD development.

Furthermore, patients with medicals condition such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and atrial fibrillation are associated with an increased risk to develop ischemic colitis(IC), according to the study by Beijing Hospital, Ministry of Health.

Believe it or not, regular drinking of tap water was a protective factor and ulcerative colitis appendicectomy was a protective factor.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of colitis, researchers examined the effects of bromelain on the inflammatory response that lead to the onset of colitis.

In epithelial TNFR in rats colitis induced by the intracolonic administration of 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid, injection of purified fruit bromelain (PFB) significantly decreased the increased expression of TNFR1 and TNFR2.

Where TNF-α receptor (TNFR) is a proinflammatory cytokine activated by the immune response.

Furthermore, typical symptoms associated with colitis such as infiltration of inflammatory cells, cytokine profiles, epithelial cell apoptosis, and epithelial tight junction barrier dysfunction were significantly ameliorated by PFB.

According to the chemical analysis, fruit bromelain showed a superior inhibition of TNFR2 than that exhibited on TNFR1 compared to those of stem bromelain complex.

In other words, PFB expressed its anti-inflammatory activity by blocking the activation of high expression of epithelial TNFRs.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "PFB-induced TNFR inhibition ameliorated colitis symptoms. These results supply novel insights into potential IBD treatment by PFB".

In other to reveal more information on bromelain anti-colitis effects, researchers evaluated the long-term dietary supplementation with pineapple (supplied as juice) in decreasing colon inflammation and neoplasia in Il10(-/-) mice with chronic colitis as compared with bromelain derived from the stem.

Colitis triggered in Il10(-/-) mice by exposure to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug piroxicam for 6 months showed decreased histologic colon inflammation scores and lower incidence of inflammation-associated colonic neoplasia (35% versus 66%; P < 0.02), with fewer neoplastic lesions/colon (P = 0.05) after receiving treatment of fresh juice.

According to the tested assays, fresh pineapple juice demonstrated proteolytic activity in removing cell surface molecules that can affect leukocyte response.

Dr. Hale LP, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "Long-term dietary supplementation with fresh or unpasteurized frozen pineapple juice with proteolytically active bromelain enzymes is safe and decreases inflammation severity and the incidence and multiplicity of inflammation-associated colonic neoplasia in this commonly used murine model of inflammatory bowel disease".

Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colitis associated with inflammatory bowel disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Antioxidant #Betaxanthins Protect the the Arteries Agianst the Risk of #Stenosis, Researchers Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Stenosis of the arteries is a narrowing large artery caused by the accumulation of plaques located on each side of the neck that carries blood to the head, face, and brain.

The most common causes of stenosis of the arteries are results from atherosclerosis.

Untreated stenosis of the arteries has been found to induce complications of transient ischemic attack or stroke, depending on a blot clot that briefly blockage or partly or completely blockage of a blood vessel to the brain.

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaque accumulated on the wall of arteries, leading to the narrowing of the artery and reducing oxygen risk blood flow to the heart and brain.

Depending on the location of the blockage, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the brain, it will cause the death of the brain cells, leading to stroke.

However, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the heart, it will cause damage to the heart tissues, leading to heart disease.

The most common disease associated with atherosclerosis is coronary artery disease. Plaques are made up of cholesterol, calcium, and other chemical substances in the artery

Most people with atherosclerosis are asymptomatic at the early stage.

Some researchers suggested that atherosclerosis is a lipoprotein-driven disease. Therefore, people with high blood cholesterol are at an increased risk of atherosclerosis. Overuse of calcium supplements is also found to elevate the condition risk, particularly in the elderly.

Other risk factors that have bee found epidemiologically by studies are high blood pressure, triglycerides, smoking, insulin resistance, obesity or diabetes and inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis, lupus or infections.

Most cases of atherosclerosis can be reversed by making a change of lifestyle and moderate exercise. However, in severe cases surgery to remove plaque from the artery may be the only option.

Betaxanthins are Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, Sicilian prickly pear, etc.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, researchers investigated the effects of betalains, consisting of betacyanins and betaxanthins on the stenosis of the arteries.

In vivo and in vitro studies, betalains and betalain-rich diets is not only safe but also inhibited oxidative stress-, inflammation-, and dyslipidemia-related diseases associated with narrowing arteries involved in atherosclerosis, or a build-up of plaque on the inside of the arteries.

Furthermore, betalains and betalain-rich diets are safe toxicological safety, incorporated with easy accessibility, low price, biodegradability, and potentially advantageous biological effects on health.

These results strongly suggested betalains may be used in food manufacturing and related industries to overcome current concerns over the health risks of artificial colors.

Dr. Rahimi P, the lead scientist wrote, "(Even with the efficacy), further studies using pure betalains are required to gain a deeper understanding of their precise biological functions".

Taken altogether, betaxanthins found abundantly in betalains and betalain-rich diets may be considered anti-atherosclerotic remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Garlic in Reducing the Risk of #BreastCancer, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Garlic is a species in the onion genus, belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating the common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotics, etc.

Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is cancer that starts in the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk. there are also rare cases that breast cancer starts in other areas of the breast. In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Fresh Garlic Extract beside inhibited colon and gastric cancer in 2 previous articles, it has also been found to arrest the growth and alter the morphology of MCF7 breast cancer cells.

Also in MCF7 human breast cancer cells, garlic constituent diallyl trisulfide has highly effective antitumor effects by the suppressing viability of cultured MCF-7 and MCF-12a cells, through the decreased percentage of cells in G(2)/M and induced apoptotic cell death.

According to the study by 201 South University Street, diallyl trisulfide, inhibited the expression of MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cells, regardless of the state of estrogen in the tumors.

In a total of 285 women (aged 25-65 years old) newly diagnosed with histopathologically confirmed breast cancer, dietary Allium Vegetables have a negative association between the consumption of raw onion and the risk of breast cancer.

Dr. Roy N., the lead author at the Kerala Agricultural University, said, "Docking studies and ADMET evaluation revealed twelve compounds (isolated from garlic) to be active against the targets(breast cancer cell lines). All the compounds displayed highly negative dock scores which indicated good interactions".

Therefore, the effectiveness of garlic in reducing the risk and treatment of breast cancer is probably due to the existence of many phytochemicals found in the herb. Women who increased their intake of garlic every day may see the risk of breast cancer reduced substantially.

#Healthyfood #Gingers Inhibit the Symptoms and Disabilities of #Osteoarthritis, According to Scientists

By Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may be considered a natural whole food to treat osteoarthritis with no side effects, some scientists suggested.
Osteoarthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease, as a result of the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones being worn and torn down over time. The disease affects millions of people worldwide.

In contrast to the general belief, osteoarthritis only damages the joints of the hands and knees, but also causes inflammation of the joints in your hips and spine.

The condition is a slow development disease, often starting in the 40s and 50s, and affects almost all people to some degree by age 80.

The common risk factors of osteoarthritis are aging, gender, improper healing of injured joints at a young age, obesity, and bone deformity. However, people who have a job with tasks that place repetitive stress on a particular joint are associated with the onset of osteoarthritis in most industrial countries.

Dr. Berran Yucesoy, the lead author in the concerns of the repetitive occupation associated with the risk of osteoarthritis launched an investigation to examine the occupational that contribute to this debilitating condition.

The results of searching the medical data on PubMed using the search terms osteoarthritis, occupation, work, and genetics wrote, " One of the most common occupational risk factors for knee OA is heavy physical workload" and "Other risk factors include frequent exposure to several biomechanical stressors such bending of the knee, kneeling or squatting, standing for long hours (≥ 2 hours per day), walking ≥ 3 km/day, regular stair climbing, heavy lifting (≥ 10 kg), jumping, and vibration".

Believe it or not, the researcher continued, " a more than the five-fold greater risk of knee OA among workers ≥ 55 years who were exposed to a combination of heavy lifting (> 25 kg) and kneeling/squatting or climbing stairs".

If your occupation is in the group mentioned in the study, you are likely to develop osteoarthritis at a younger age. Please make sure you are taking all preventive measures to reduce the risk of the onset of the disease later in life

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The pungent and kitchen spice has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find evidence that ginger powder consumption can relieve pain and inflammation due to specific anti-inflammatory phytochemical constituents, researchers at the joint investigation led by the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences launched a study to examine the effect of ginger supplementation on proinflammatory factors.

The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled 3-month clinical trial investigating knee osteoarthritis includes 120 participants assigned to one of two groups: the ginger group (GG) or the placebo group (PG).

Participants in the GG intervention received capsules containing 500 mg of ginger powder, while PG participants received capsules filled with 500 mg of starch.

At 3 months, the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) cytokines were found to decrease substantially in the GG compared to the PG.

Dr. Mozaffari-Khosravi H, the lead scientist wrote in the final report " Ginger supplementation may have promising benefits for knee osteoarthritis".

Furthermore, the assessment of the clinical efficacy and safety of oral ginger for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) by carrying out a systematic literature search followed by meta-analyses on selected studies in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing oral ginger treatment with placebo in OA patients aged >18 years also suggested that

* Ginger intake shows a statistically significant pain reduction with a low degree of inconsistency among trials.

* The ginger treatment group also demonstrates a statistically significant reduction in disability.

* Patients given ginger are more than twice as likely to discontinue treatment compared to placebo. And,

* Ginger was modestly efficacious and reasonably safe for the treatment of OA.

Taken altogether, through the inhibition of pro-inflammatory factors, ginger, and a ginger supplement may be considered for the prevention and adjunct therapies combined with primary medicine for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

#Phytochemical #Sinigrin Found in #Cruciferousvegetables Speeds Up Wound Healing in Vitros, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Sinigrin may be used as a natural and bioactive compound to speed up wound healing, according to studies.
Wound healing is a natural process of an immune system response to protect our body against harmful pathogenic invasion.

After receiving the message from the neurons in the brain, the immune first line of defense including the macrophages stimulates the blood palettes to the site of infection to cover the injury and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to kill off the stimuli and pathogens which try to enter the body through the wound.

Some anti-inflammatory cytokines under normal conditions also switch to pro-inflammatory cytokines depending on the severity of the injury.

In some cases, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines can cause damage or death of the nearby cells, leading to the formation of irreversible scars, such as hepatitis infection.

Even worse, if the immune system can not kill off all pathogens in the acute phase of infection, it will compromise to the new change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.

Bacterial pathogens often cause infection in specific areas of the body by overgrowth of the number of bacteria in the site, including the gut.

According to epidemiological studies, some bacteria are opportunistic pathogens, and people with a weakened immune system are particularly prone to their invasion.

Dr. Dennis W. Metzger, the lead scientist wrote, " While it has been commonly thought that viral-induced epithelial cell damage allows bacterial invasiveness, recent studies by several groups have now implicated dysfunctional innate immune defenses following influenza as the primary culprit for enhanced susceptibility to secondary bacterial infections".

The results strongly indicated the increased risk of bacterial infection in people with a weakened immune system.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for speeding up wound healing explored the wound healing effect of sinigrin on HaCaT cells.

In the phytosome with sinigrin with an average particle size of 153 ± 39 nm, the zeta potential of 10.09 ± 0.98 mV and complex efficiency of 69.5 ± 5%.

The formulated sinigrin-phytosome complex significantly exhibited a greater wound-healing effect compared to the use of sinigrin alone.

Compared to only 71% of wounds closer to sinigrin after 42 hours, the phytosome complex completely healed the wound.

At a lower concentration of 0.07 mg/mL, the sinigrin–phytosome complex displayed 79%, whilst sinigrin showed only 50% of wound closure.

At the higher concentration of 0.14 mg/mL the sinigrin–phytosome complex completely cured the wound (100%), compared to only 71% wound healing of sinigrin.

Furthermore, The sinigrin-phytosome complex displayed minimal toxicity towards HaCaT cells.

Injection of the complex also exerted a strong effect on A-375, a human melanoma cell line.

Dr. Mazumder A, after taking into account co and confounders wrote at the end of the experiment, " sinigrin-phytosome complex augmented the therapeutic potential of sinigrin towards the wound healing activity".

Taken altogether, sinigrin a bioactive ingredient in cruciferous vegetables may be considered a functional supplement for speedup wound healing, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

However, intake of bioactive in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care, as liver toxicity may be induced if overdosed.

#Herbal #Anise Exhibits #Antioxidant Activities Against the Onset of #GastricUlcers, Researchers Say

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of gastric ulcers, some scientists suggested.
Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...

In the evaluate the claim of Unani and Arabian traditional medicine practitioners on the gastroprotective potential effect by using 80% ethanol, 0.2 mol/L NaOH, 25% NaCl, and indomethacin-induced gastric ulceration and secretion in a rat model, researchers found that application of doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight of Anise exert a significant protective activity against basal gastric acid secretion, acidity and completely inhibited the ruminal ulceration caused by necrotizing agents, by initiating production of depleted levels of gastric mucosal NP-SH and gastric wall mucus concentration.

Further analysis suggested that the anti-gastric ulcers of Anise suspension were attributed to the herbal medicine antioxidants in enhanced production of hormone prostaglandins in inhibited levels of gastric secretion.

The hormone has been studied intensively for the protection and treatment of gastric ulcers by some scientists due to its effect in promoting rapid restitution of the superficial epithelium of the gastric mucosa and preservation of the deeper layers through the ability of the hormones in inhibited gastric secretion, stimulated bicarbonate secretion, and increased gastric blood volume.

According to Dr. Wilson DE, "Orally administered prostaglandin analogs have been helpful in some patients who failed to heal with standard ulcer treatment and in smokers, who usually do not heal as well as nonsmokers".

Some researchers suggested that prostaglandin analogs may be the ideal solution for patients who are at high risk for gastric lesions due to chronic consumers of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or alcohol.

Moreover, in the investigation of the effect of essential oil isolated from Croton zehntneri (EOCZ), a plant native to northeastern Brazil, and anethole at doses of 30–300 mg/kg, researchers found that the composition demonstrated a strongly and linearly gastroprotective effect against ethanol- and indomethacin-induced gastric damage without changing to cold-restraint stress-induced ulcers in rats.

According to the measurement by Alcian blue binding assay, EOCZ and anethole (both at 30 and 300 mg/kg) similarly and significantly increased the mucus production by the gastric mucosa.

Additionally, the composition also consisted a significant effect on the volume of gastric juice, pH, or total acidity through its ability of EOCZ and anethole in enhanced production of gastric wall mucus.

The above of differentiation was supported by the study to test the major bioactive compound anethole effect in the ethanol-induced ulcer model in mice conducted by the joint investigation led by Coordenação do Curso de Farmácia,

According to the results, after taking into account other co-founders, the application of anethole (300 mg/kg) increased the level of gastric mucus, while derivatives (300 mg/kg) showed gastroprotective activity without affecting mucus secretion, through anethole antioxidant and anti-inflammation activities.

By examining the antioxidant aspects in the experiment mice, researchers surprisingly found that anethole exhibited a protective gastric effect through reduced oxidative stress caused by induced suspension in the activated gastric mucosal nitric oxide (NO) in maintaining gastric mucosal integrity and improving the production of the natural antioxidants in the host body, including glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxide (MDA, measured as malondialdehyde) glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase.

Importantly, anethole also reduced oxidative stress in initiated levels of pro-inflammatory substances of plasma tumor necrosis factor-α with function involved in systemic inflammation in the acute phase reaction and interleukin-1β and IL-6 in regulated immune response in protecting the host against bacterial and viral in the induction of infection.

Taken together, herbal Anise and its major chemical constituent anethole may be considered a secondary therapy accompanied by conventional medicine for the treatment of gastric ulcers. However, the intake of Anise supplements should be taken with extreme care in the prevention of acute liver toxicity.

Antioxidant #Indicaxanthin Inhibits the Onco-#Suppressor Gene Associated with the Risk of #ColonCancer, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

The colon formed part of the digestive system, is the 2nd part of intestines found in the large bowel consisting of the colon and rectum. The colon plays a critical role to absorb water from the small bowel contents and breaking down certain materials in the feces into substances in which some of which are reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases caused by cell DNA alternation in the tissue of a specific organ.
The invasive tumor tends to spread to other nearby healthy tissue compared to a noninvasive and benign tumor.

Colon cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth that starts in the cells in the inner lining of the tissues of the colon tissues, after penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor, through the unlimited cell cycle division.

Colon cancer is relatively very common, slowly growing and progressing in a predictable way.

However, at the advanced stage, colon cancerous cells can travel a distance away to invade other healthy tissue, leading to secondary metastasis.

Together with rectal cancer, colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in Western countries, including the US and Canada.

According to the statistics, the lifetime risk of developing colon cancer is about one in 23. Colon cancer accounts for 71% of all cases of colorectal cancer. The overall 5 years survival rate of localized colon cancer is 90%.

The 5-year survival rate of colon cancer is 90%. Only 39% of patients are diagnosed in the localized stage.

Dr. Bandaru S. Reddy, in examining the types and amount of dietary fat and colon cancer risk wrote, "The role of types of dietary fat, especially saturated fats of animal origin, n−6- and n−3-rich polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the etiology of colorectal cancer has become increasingly apparent".

And, "Epidemiological studies indicate a positive association between the dietary intake of saturated fat and/or animal fat and colon cancer risk and an inverse relationship between the intake of fish and fish oil rich in n−3 PUFAs and colon cancer development".

In other words, if you follow the Western diet, you are at an increased risk of colon cancer.

Indicaxanthin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

In finding a potent compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the potential influence of consistent dietary concentrations of indicaxanthin on LOVO1, CACO2, HT29, HCT116, and DLD1 cells.

According to the tested analysis, Indicaxanthin exerted a significant anti-proliferative activity in all cell lines but HT29 by inhibiting some methylation-silenced on-co-suppressor genes.

In other words, Indicaxanthin normalized the gene expression associated with cancer cell suppression without affecting the function of basally hypermethylated such as SFRP1 and HPP1.

Interestingly, indicaxanthin increased the DNA Methyltransferases (DNMT) gene expression but decrease the activity involved in the promotion of various types of cancer, including colon cancer.

Most importantly, Indicaxanthin also increased the expression of genes involved in DNA demethylation associated with the activity of unwanted DNA methyltransferase-induced tumor progression.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "contribute to new knowledge in the field of phytochemicals and specifically suggest dietary indicaxanthin as a potential epigenetic agent to protect colon cells against tumoral alterations".

Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Turmeric Improves the Immune Functioning Against the Risk of #AcquiredImmunodeficiencySyndrome (#AIDS), According to Scientists)

By Kyle J. Norton

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a disease associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection at the most advanced stage.

In other words, if an HIV-infected person has a CD4, the glycoprotein found on the surface of immune cells counts less than 200 cells/mm3, he/she is considered to have developed AIDS.

AIDS is caused by the infection of HIV. However, most HIV-infected patients are HIV carriers.

The most common risk factors associated with HIV injection are contact with body fluids such as infected blood, milk coming from a mother who carries the HIV, vaginal or anal sex, sharing drugs needles, and oral sex.

Believe it or not, HIV cannot live outside the human body for long because the virus needs body fluid to survive.

According to the statistics, approximately, 1.1 million people in the US are living with HIV, including 15% of those who don't know they are infected. Only half of the patients half are virally suppressed.

In 2016, 39,782 cases of new HIV were diagnosed.

Some researchers' sexual behavior of a person may have a strong impact on increasing the risk of HIV injection. More precisely,

Dr. Molly S. Rosenberg, the lead scientist wrote, "HIV prevalence was very high among HAALSI participants (23%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 21 to 24), with no sex differences. Recent sexual activity was common (56%, 95% CI: 55 to 58) across all HIV status categories. Condom use was low among HIV-negative adults (15%, 95% CI: 14 to 17), higher among HIV-positive adults who were unaware of their HIV status (27%, 95% CI: 22 to 33), and dramatically higher among HIV-positive adults who were aware of their status (75%, 95% CI: 70 to 80). Casual sex and multiple partnerships were reported at moderate levels, with slightly higher estimates among HIV-positive compared to HIV-negative adults".

And, "Older HIV-positive adults in an HIV hyperendemic community of rural South Africa report sexual behaviors consistent with high HIV transmission risk. Older HIV-negative adults report sexual behaviors consistent with high HIV acquisition risk".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and for the treatment of treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, researchers examined the immunomodulatory effects of Curcuma longa L., purple sweet potato, and mixtures of the two (CPM) in an animal model.

The study included selected C57BL/6 mice infected with LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus (MuLV), randomly divided into seven groups as follows:
* Normal control,

* Infected control (LP-BM5 MuLV infection),

* Positive control (LP-BM5 MuLV infection+dietary supplement of red ginseng 300 mg/kg body weight),

* The original powder of C. longa L. (C; LP-BM5 MuLV infection+dietary supplement of C 189 mg/kg body weight),

* The original powder of purple sweet potato (P; LP-BM5 MuLV infection+dietary supplement of P 1811 mg/kg body weight), CPM Low (CPL; LP-BM5 MuLV infection+CPM 2 g/kg body weight), and

* CPM High (CPH; LP-BM5 MuLV infection+CPM 5 g/kg body weight). Dietary supplementation lasted for 12 weeks.

According to the tested assays, dietary supplementation of CPM inhibited LP-BM5 MuLV-induced lymphadenopathy, an inflammatory disease of the lymph nodes, and splenomegaly, a condition of abnormal enlargement of the spleen.

Furthermore, CPM also enhanced the immune function in recognizing invasive and foreign viruses, which may weaken the immune system to initiate the onset of infection.

In other words, CPM enhanced the immune function against the progression of MuLV.

More precisely, CPM reduced the decrease in T- and B cell proliferation reduced the population of CD4(+)/CD8(+) T cells, and inhibited the unbalanced production of T helper-1 (Th1)/T helper-2 (Th2) cytokines in LP-BM5 MuLV-infected mice.

Moreover, the immune function also was exhibited by the injection of CPM observed by the supplement immune-modulatory activity, including the inhibition of the reduction of phagocytosis in peritoneal macrophages and decreased serum levels of immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin E (IgE), and immunoglobulin G (IgG).

Based on the results, researchers after taking other factors into account wrote, "CPM had a positive effect on immunomodulation in C57BL/6 mice induced by LP-BM5 leukemia retrovirus infection".

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Catnips in the Promotion of #PenileErection and #MalesexualDesire, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Many researchers have raised questions about their's quality and effectiveness, depending too much on geographic differences, time of growth and harvest, etc. I do believe, these questions can only be answered by an experienced herbalist.

Dopamine, a neurotransmitter plays an important role in the brain of the human body, including sexual behavior. Besides the regulation of cognitive, integrative, and reward processes, the organic chemical of catecholamine and phenethylamine also can trigger penile erection and control of sexual function by acting on oxytocinergic neurons.

Dr. Baskerville TA said," Dopamine demonstrates the potential existence of an interaction between central dopamine and hormone in controlling sexual reproduction during penile erection

In fact, the effect of a pro-erectile dose of apomorphine, a mixed dopamine receptor agonist, showed stimulation of dopamine receptors, induced the release of oxytocin in the brain to mediate and reinforce effects of sexual activity in regulating the sexual behavior (e.g., penile erection) with those controlling sexual motivation and sexual arousal.

Catnip may be the next generation of herbal medicine used as dopamine to increase penile erection and improve male sexual behavior.

Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine as an insect repellent, and to treat digestive disorders, children's restlessness and nervousness, fevers, colds, and flu, skin irritations stimulate sweating, promote menstruation, etc.

According to Paulista University, male rats of the NC group increased penile erection. facilitate sexual behavior and a decrease in general activity involving dopaminergic systems.

Several studies suggested that dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in regulating and controlling penile erection and sexual behavior, but the use of herbal medicine should only be prescribed by herbalists to prevent depression.

#Healthyfood #NavyBean Processes Antioxidant Activities, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation induced by free radicals.
Free radicals are highly unstable atoms. Internally, free radicals are produced by our body's cell metabolism. Externally, free radicals can enter our body from the environmental sources, such as the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink.

In other words, any chemical compounds or molecules which process an oxygen atom can be free radicals in a chemical reaction with other atoms.

According to epidemiological studies, free radicals are dangerous to human health in excessive amounts. Overexpression of free radicals-induced oxidative stress has been found to damage the lipid, and protein and induce the alternation of healthy cell DNA.

Out of all damages caused by the overexpression of free radicals, some researchers suggested that lipid peroxidation induced by free radicals has a strong implication in the pathogenesis of various disorders and diseases.

In a healthy person, antioxidants produced by the body are more than enough to counter the expression of free radicals. However, in people with a weakened immune system, the intake of dietary antioxidants regularly can be helpful.

Oxidative stress can either be caused by the overexpression of free radicals or the depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

Some researchers suggested that by balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body, diseases associated with oxidative stress can be preventable.

Dr. Monica H Carlsen wrote, "A plant-based diet protects against chronic oxidative stress-related diseases. Dietary plants contain variable chemical families and amounts of antioxidants".

And, "there are several thousand-fold differences in antioxidant content of foods. Spices, herbs, and supplements include the most antioxidant-rich products in our study, some exceptionally high. Berries, fruits, nuts, chocolate, vegetables, and products thereof constitute common foods and beverages with high antioxidant values".

The results strongly suggested that intake of a higher amount of berries, fruits, nuts, chocolate, and vegetables which are antioxidant-rich products can protect us against the risk of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. the beans are now grown and consumed across the world, due to their numerous health benefits.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the antioxidant effects of a pinto bean, cowpea, baby lima bean, lentil, chickpea, small red bean, red kidney bean, black kidney bean, navy bean, and mung bean extracts.

Navy beans showed significantly lesser antioxidant activity in vitro compared to those lentils with total antioxidant activity (720.68 U/g), and DPPH• scavenging activity (38.5%).

In free radical scavenging activity, navy bean also showed a lesser activity compared to those of black kidney bean (85.68%) and baby lima bean (74.97%) extracts in inhibiting the oxidation of Among the extracts, hydroxyl radicals (•OH).

In the chemical analysis, the total antioxidant activity (r=0.84), DPPH• scavenging activity (r=0.83), and total reducing power (r=0.84) were positively correlated with the total phenolic content which also lower in the navy been compared to those of lentils.

Taken altogether, the navy bean may be considered a natural antioxidant for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Andrographis in the Promotion of #ImmunomodulatoryActivity, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Andrographis paniculata also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, and upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...

Immunomodulatory Activity is the action in regulated immune response or the functioning of the immune system against forming of diseases, including stimulating the production of antibodies and
inhibited white blood cells in induced inflammation,.....

Andrographis processed significant effects in enhanced immune function, through modulation of immune responses, a renowned institute study suggested.

According to the Prin. K. M. Kundnani College of Pharmacy, HN-02, an extract containing a mixture of andrographolides plus 14-deoxy andrographolide and 14-deoxy-11,12-didehydroandrographolide together [12 +/- 3 %]) in pure powder forms at 1.0, 1.5, and 2.5 mg/kg on different in vivo and in vitro experimental models, demonstrated the ability in enhanced immune function by modulation of immune responses altered during antigen interaction, and to reverse the immunosuppression induced by cyclophosphamide (CYP).

Dr. Naik SR, the lead author said, " HN-02 treatment significant increase in total WBC count" and "elevated the depressed hemagglutination antibody (HA) titer and increased the number of plaque-forming cells (PFCs) in the spleen cells of mice".

Other researchers in the evaluation of the immunomodulatory activity of herbal Andrographis indicated that Andrographis paniculata exhibited the effect through gene expression involved in immune cell activation and migration and various inflammatory responses, including wound healing, angiogenesis, and blood pressure modulation.

The study also identified the chemical compound of lipopolysaccharide in Andrographis paniculata as one of the natural and most active immunostimulatory components.

Additionally, the dichloromethane fraction of the methanolic extract of Andrographis paniculata also expressed an impressive inhibition against testing human cancer and immune cells.
At low concentrations, the dichloromethane extracts enhanced immune function, attenuating the proliferation of HT-29 (colon cancer) cells and human peripheral blood lymphocytes (HPBLs).

Furthermore, the study also found, andrographolide, another major compound in Andrographis paniculata exhibited the immune ability to suppress irregular cell growth and cancer activity on diverse cancer cells in different types of human cancers.

Taking all together, there is no doubt, that Andrographis consists of vigorous immunomodulatory activity in regulated immune responses against a procession of irregular cell growth and overreaction of foreign harmful substances, but intake of large amounts should be taken with care.

#Healthyfood #GreenBeans in the Reducing the Risk of #Leukemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system.

Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow, containing two main types of stem cells is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone, including the spine, pelvis, underarm, and leg. etc. with the main function of generating blood cells.

Believe it or not, the bone marrow produces 200 billion new red blood cells every day, to replace the blood cells that die off, along with white blood cells and platelets.

According to the statistics provided by the leukemia research, leukemia is diagnosed 10 times more often in adults than children. Approximately, each year the disease causes the death of 68,000 Americans.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the 7th most common cancer in the U.S.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the number of extremely immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream into other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common childhood form of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

Chronic leukemia is a condition of the slow but still excessive build-up of relatively mature abnormal white blood cells. The condition has a tendency to spread slowly to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and/or lymphatic system, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belongs to the family Fabaceae, and is native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding a potent veggie for the prevention of leukemia, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center evaluated associations between the consumption of vegetables, fruits, and meats with AML risk among Texas residents.

According to the results from all participants, 323 adult de novo AML cases and 380 frequency-matched controls, demographic and food frequency questionnaires, overall consuming the darkest green vegetables, including green beans significantly decreased AML risk, comapred to significantly increased among greatest consumers of red meat.

Among women, consumption in the highest quartile of dark-green vegetables had a relative odds ratio of 0.28 compared to the lowest quartile.

In other words, the intake of dark-green vegetables such as green beans has reduced the risk of leukemia only in women compared to men in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Based on these findings, interventions can be developed to modify intake of specific dietary components to reduce cancer risk".

Taken altogether, dark-green vegetables such as green beans may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention of leukemia in women, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Antioxidant #Indicaxanthin Inhibits the Risk of Hypercholesterolemia and Hypercholesterolemic Complications, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.
In other words, the condition is caused by either overexpression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary in moderate amount source plays a critical to aid digestive function in absorbing nutrients, building strong cell membranes, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.

Similar to high blood pressure, people with hypercholesterolemia are asymptomatic. Patients with familial hyper cholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.

The most common complications associated with uncontrolled hypercholesterolemia are carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, including angina or heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US. In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol, and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Sadly, only 50% of people with hypercholesterolemia are getting treatment.

Out of many risk factors associated with the risk of hypercholesterolemia, some researchers suggested that widespread obesity due to aging may have a strong impact on the increased incidence in the US.

Dr. Parini P, the lead scientist wrote, "Plasma cholesterol levels increase with age, as does the incidence of coronary heart disease" and "the relative deficiency in growth hormone (GH), which occurs with aging, contributes to the development of the age-related hypercholesterolemia, because GH has beneficial effects on cholesterol metabolism".

However, researchers continued, "Growth hormone (GH), treatment strongly reduced the hypercholesterolemia in 18-month-old animals. We conclude that the age-dependent increase of plasma cholesterol in rats can be reversed by the administration of GH, presumably through the pleiotropic effects of this hormone on lipoprotein metabolism".

In other words, aging in the promotion of hypercholesterolemia-induced complications can be preventable by the regulation of lipoprotein metabolism.

Indicaxanthin is phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the improvement of cholesterol file, researchers examined the effect of Indicaxanthin effects on toxic oxysterols in hypercholesterolemia.

Where toxic oxysterols in hypercholesterolemia have been found to cause suicidal death of human erythrocytes or cryptos is associated with red blood cell programmed death.

According to the tested differentiation, indicaxanthin (Ind) from cactus pear fruit, incubated with isolated healthy human erythrocytes exposed to an oxysterol mixture for 48 h in a concentration range (1.0-5.0 μM) prevents membrane phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization and cell shrinkage in a dose-dependent manner.

In other words, indicaxanthin (Ind) protects the PS that regulates the production of thrombin, the central regulatory molecule of blood coagulation caused by overexpression of ROS and depletion of antioxidant enzymes and production of inflammatory cytokine-induced by an oxysterol mixture without affecting the erythrocyte redox environment or other parameters.

In ex vivo, indicaxanthin (Ind) at 5 μm, induced the spiking levels of normal human blood with the oxysterol mixture for 48 h induced eryptosis, by reducing the production of ROS and decreased levels of GSH.

Furthermore, eryptosis, the suicidal erythrocyte death, leads to cell shrinkage and cell membrane scrambling, and red blood cell programmed death to cause vascular tissue injury was inhibited by 5 μm-Ind.

These results suggested that eryptotic erythrocytes that contribute to thrombotic complications in hypercholesterolemia were prevented by the application of indicaxanthin.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "the positive effects of diets containing Ind on erythrocytes in hypercholesterolaemic subjects".

Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention of hypercholesterolemia complications, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Ginger in the Expression of #Antibiotic Activity Against #ParasiteInfection, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of diseases caused by a bacterial infection, some studies found.
Infection is a medical condition caused by bacteria multiplication after entering the body.

During the acute phase of infection before the bacteria enter the body, white blood cells of the systematic immune response to the bodily injury and damage by activating not only the emergency repair system to cover the wound through coagulation but also stimulating the proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines to kill off the invaded pathogens.

However, in many instances, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines can cause damage or death of nearby cells, leading to improper healing with the formation of scars.

In fact, failure to switch from the phase of production of proinflammatory cytokines to anti-inflammatory can interrupt the healing process, leading to chronic wounds and inflammation.

Some researchers suggested that the failure of the switches may be caused by the weakened immune system that can not kill off all foreign invaders within 3 to 8 weeks.

Researchers continued, our immune system has evolved over thousands of years with an aim to kill off all stimuli and pathogens within a said of time, otherwise, they will adapt to the change, causing low-grade inflammation that cannot be reversed in many diseases such as type 2 diabetes and RA.

Most cases of acute infection were blocked in the first phase of the immune system response. In other words, the white blood cells won, pathogens were destroyed and the wound started to recover process without interruption.

However, if the pathogens won, after entering the body, they can initiate infection through the stage of incubation where bacteria multiplying in the specific tissues and organs, leading to colonization and in facilitating disease development.

Patients with acute bacterial infection usually recover in a short period of time within 3 weeks.

Severely, if the immune system can not get rid of the invaders in the said time, some bacterial pathogens will establish life-long chronic infections by the persistent establishment after an acute infection period.

Dr. Cierny G 3rd, the lead scientist, at the RE Orthopaedics, said," Failure of an acute inflammatory response to resolve a wound infection heralds a cascade of events that affect the host and pathogens, culminating in a chronic, refractory condition".

"The factors contributing to this outcome include immune compromise of the host, antimicrobial resistance, wound-healing deficiencies, and the adherence of pathogens to themselves and wound surfaces via an impenetrable, resistant biofilm.".

These results firmly suggested that if you have a weakened immune system you have a substantially increased risk of chronic bacterial infection.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

In finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of infection with little or no side effects researchers evaluated the effects of ginger against the monogenean parasite Gyrodactylus turnbulli.

The tested ethanolic and aqueous extracts were prepared for freeze-dried ginger.

An increase in extract concentration was associated with reduced time to parasite immobilization.
Injection at concentrations of 5 and 40ppt ethanolic extract induced parasite death at 26.1±0.7 and 4.9±0.3min, respectively. The ethanolic extract was more efficient. At 75 and 200ppt aqueous ginger extract, induced parasites died at 65.6±2.8 and 1.8±0.2min, respectively.

Bathing G. Turnbull-infected fish in the ethanolic ginger extract (i.e. 5 and 7.5ppt for 90 and 30min, respectively) significantly reduced infection prevalence and intensity.

The higher concentration (i.e. 7.5ppt) proved to be effective as those of Praziquantel, the conventional chemical.

Interestingly, oral treatments of G. Turnbull-infected guppies with diets supplemented with 10 and 20% ginger powder also proved to be ineffective in decreasing parasite load.

Furthermore, in schistosome mansonii-infected mice, extract given daily for 45 days beginning at either 2nd day or 45 days post-infection showed a reduction of worm burden and the egg load in the liver and intestine which coincided with the reduction in granuloma diameters.

Ginger extract exerted a potential effect in reducing some inflammatory mediators that play a crucial role in schistosomal liver fibrosis and its complications.

The in-depth analysis also suggested that ginger extract also minimizes the deleterious effects of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers in the tested mice.

Taken altogether, ginger extracts with the abundant bioactive compound may be used for the prevention and treatment of parasite-infected diseases, pending the larger and multi-center human study.

#Enzyme #Bromelain Inhibits the Symptoms of #FunctionalDyspepsia Cuased by Helicobacter Pylori Infection, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Functional dyspepsia, also known as indigestion, is a symptom in the stomach associated with difficulty in digesting food.

The most common symptoms of indigestion are pain or discomfort in your upper abdomen (dyspepsia) or burning pain behind the breastbone (heartburn) soon after eating.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of feeling full or bloated with no signs of relief.

In serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms of vomiting blood, dark, tarry stools due to damage to the lining of the stomach, shortness of breath, and unexplained weight loss.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with the doctor immediately

There exact causes of indigestion are multiple. Epidemiologically, female gender, aging, long-term use of pain relievers, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, smoking, and people with long-term psychological problems such as anxiety or depression are some most common factors found in patients with functional dyspepsia.

Conventionally, treatment of functional dyspepsia is totally depending on the condition, including antibiotics for H. pylori infection and medication to reduce pain.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

In finding potential and natural compounds for the treatment of functional dyspepsia, researchers examined a dietary integrator composed of sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, bromelin, and essential oils in patients affected by functional dyspepsia.

The study included a study of a total of 100 patients with functional dyspepsia diagnosed primarily on the basis of typical symptoms and the exclusion of non-functional gastrointestinal diseases.

According to the symptom classification, All patients were assigned to either dysmotility-like dyspepsia (N.=60) or reflux-like dyspepsia (N.=40).

All patients were treated with TUBES Gastro (0.80 g oral tablets bid after main meals) for 4 weeks, on top of their current treatment with proton pump inhibitors or not.

According to the results from the experiment, TUBES Gastro showed a high statistically significant reduction of the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) scores at 14 and 28 days: -1.5 (-26.3%) and -3.4 (-59.6%), respectively compared to the baseline in patients with dysmotility-like dyspepsia.

In patients with reflux-like dyspepsia, TUBES Gastro demonstrated a statistically significant reduction of the NRS score at 14 and 28 days: -2.8 (-41.2%) and -4.8 (70.6%), respectively (P<0.0001).

Furthermore, there were no side effects found during the study duration.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "TUBES Gastro treatment was effective and well-tolerated in reducing the symptomatology of patients affected by functional dysmotility-like and reflux-like dyspepsia".

In order to reveal additional information of TUBES Gastro anti-functional dyspepsia, researchers at the Molinette Hospital conducted a study to examine the preparation efficacy on a total of 53 consecutive patients (22 males, 31 females; mean age, 54+/-2.5 years) with functional dyspepsia and negative for Helicobacter pylori infection.

Patients classified to four subgroups according to predominant symptom: ulcer-like dyspepsia, Motility-like dyspepsia, reflux-like dyspepsia, and nonspecific dyspepsia, were received TUBES gastro (0.80 g oral tablets bid) for a minimum of 3 months (range, 3-11).

According to the results of patients who completed the study, the preparation showed a strong effect on the improvement in Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). score.

Compared to the based line, the difference in scores between the initial and the final visit was -1.9+/-2.1 cm (range, -6 to +3), or 23.8+/-40.8% (range, -150% to 100%).

Dr. Pellicano R, the lead scientist wrote, "The study results indicate that in the short term TUBES, gastro can significantly improve dyspeptic symptoms in dyspeptic patients negative for H. pylori infection".

Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other remedies may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of functional dyspepsia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
