Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as anaphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.In acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in mice study, oral administration of chaste tree berry increased significantly in expression of levels of antioxidant in inhibition of free radicals domino' effect and levels of ferric ion in induced hepatotoxicity caused by acetaminophen.
According to the Al-Hikmah University, Hepatoprotective effects of chaste tree berry may also mediate the alternative effects of acetaminophen in serum alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, albumin and total bilirubin levels which can also contribute to hepatoxicity.
Furthermore, ethanol extract Vitex glabrata (EEVG) on carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage in rats, .displayed also antioxidant activity in inhibited superoxide dismutase, GSH, lipid peroxidation (LPO), catalase and peroxidase levels in liver homogenate.
Pre-treatment of the extract illustrated a strong inhibited effect against levels of LPO in CCl(4)-intoxicated livers and reduced the elevated serum levels of chemical compounds which can cause liver damage.
Dr. Ajiboye TO said, " Vitex doniana fruits possess antioxidant properties and halted acetaminophen-mediated oxidative rout on cellular proteins, lipids and DNA, made possible by β-sitosterol, platycodin D, apigenin, saikosaponin, chrysin and ellagitanin, (the antioxidants) in the extract".

Taking together, there is no doubt that Chaste tree berry may process a protective effect in reduced risk of harmful chemicals and drugs induced liver damage, but injection of large amount should be taken with care.
