Turmeric, the Anti Hyperlipidemia Herbal Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperlipidemia or high blood cholesterol is a condition that causes abnormally high levels of lipids in the blood.

Cholesterol plays an essential role in moderate amount in orchestrating the production of steroid hormone and vitamin D, building strong cell walls and aiding the digestive system in absorbing nutrients and fluids.

Cholesterol can either be produced by the liver or consumed form the food sources. There are 2 types of cholesterol
*The high-density lipoprotein is also known as "good" cholesterol processes a function to return cholesterol to the liver.

* The low-density lipoprotein is also known as "bad" cholesterol processed a function aforementioned health benefits in moderate amount.

In a healthy individual, the bad cholesterol is returned to the liver. However, overexpression of "bad" cholesterol due to the consumption of a high-fat diet and reduced levels of "good" cholesterol can induce an unhealthy ratio of bad and good cholesterol, leading to bad cholesterol remaining in the bloodstream, a cause of hyperlipidemia.

Overexpression of bad cholesterol has been found to facilitate the plaque accumulated in the arterial wall, a major cause of heart disease and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older had total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL, and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL in the US.

Conventionally, hyperlipidemia is treated by simvastatin, lovastatin, atorvastatin, and rosuvastatin. However, holistically,  by a change of diet and daily moderate exercise, you may control the condition without medication.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, researchers investigated the effects of curcumin on hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis in high-fructose-fed Wistar rats.

Rat groups selected to the study were divided into four groups with 10 rats in each group with two groups fed with standard rodent diet with or without plus curcumin (200 mg/kg body weight)  and the other two with 60% high-fructose diet with or without curcumin (200 mg/kg body weight)for 10 weeks.

According to the results of differentiation, co-administration of curcumin reduced body weight, liver weight, adipose weight, plasma levels of TAG, VLDL-C associated with the onset of hyperlipidemia compared to the untreated group.

Additionally, curcumin also increased the levels of lipid ratios in favors of the HDL-C by increasing the levels of HDL-C (28.4 ± 4.5 mg/dL) in fructose-fed rats compared to standard rodent diet rats.

The protein expression of LXR-α (43%) and SREBP1c (59%) associated with inflammation and activation of cholesterol in the liver were also decreased by the injection curcumin.

More importantly, curcumin suppressed the expression of lipogenic enzymes associated with lipid metabolism and genes involved in cholesterol production in rats fed with a high-fructose diet.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Curcumin prevented the high-fructose induced hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
