Whole Food Honey, the Best to Speed Up Wound Healing

By Kyle J. Norton

Wound healing is a natural process to replace the injured tissue.

The process of wound healing goes through many stages. In the acute phases of wound healing, the immune systematic response induces the p[roduction of blood palette to cover the wound and production of inflammatory cytokines to kill off all stimuli or infectious pathogens.

Most cases of infection of the wound healing process are stopped at this stage and the wound process is continued to enter another stage of wound healing until the wound tissue is completely healed.

However, any interruption of the wound healing process can cause abnormal formation of scars and keloids.

In serious cases, the wound that can not be healed by 8 weeks can cause a serious complication, leading to chronic low-grade inflammatory disease.

Dr. Hailey Grubbs, the lead scientist in the investigation of wound physiology wrote, "Sometimes this process is interrupted, and chronic wounds or infection occur. Wounds that do not heal after 3 months are considered chronic. Chronic wounds may predispose patients to further complications such as disfigurement, sepsis, loss of function, or amputation".

And, "Other times the healing process may be overactive and form excess scar tissue creating complications such as hypertrophic scars and keloids. Both hypertrophic scars and keloids may be associated with itching, burning, or tenderness".

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient which has a potential in speeding up wound healing examined the use of honey in the traditional medicine for the treatment of wounds.

By searching the databases of the medical literature online, researchers found 26 eligible trials (total of 3011 participants) were included in the analysis.

According to the results of high-quality studies, honey topical administration healed partial thickness burns more quickly than conventional dressings (WMD -4.68 days, 95%CI -5.09 to -4.28) without mending any side effects and reduced the overall risk of adverse events relative to those of silver sulfadiazine (SSD).

Compared to high-quality trials, low-quality studies included in examination suggested that
* Honey heals a mixed population of acute and chronic wounds more quickly than SSD or sugar dressings.

* Honey healed infected post-operative wounds more quickly than antiseptic washes followed by gauze and was associated with fewer adverse events.

At the final report of the mega differentiation, researchers wrote, "It is difficult to draw overall conclusions regarding the effects of honey as a topical treatment for wounds due to the heterogeneous nature of the patient populations and comparators studied and the lowest quality of the evidence".

In order to clarify honey wound healing potentials, researchers examined honey healing action through its antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory properties.

Injection of honey exerted a significant effect in breaking the chain of free radicals that cause a detrimental effect on the wounded area.
Honey demonstrated a strong anti antimicrobial property that overcomes the bacterial contamination against healing rate.

Topical honey dressing displayed anti-inflammatory that protects the tissue from overexpression of proinflammatory mediators.

Moreover, researchers also found that the moisturizing properties of the honey could improve wound healing by promoting angiogenesis and oxygen circulation.

Taken altogether, honey topically may be considered a function remedy for speeding up wound healing, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
