Whole Food Ginger, the Natural Treatment for Neurological Disorders

By Kyle J. Norton

Neurological disorders are a group of diseases associated with the neurons in the brain and spinal cord of the central nervous system.

The WHO in the evaluation of neurological disorder wrote, "Neurological disorders contribute to 92 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2005 projected to increase to 103 million in 2030 (approximately a 12% increase). While Alzheimer and other dementias are projected to show a 66% increase from 2005 to 2030".

Where one DALY represents the loss of the equivalent of one year of full health.

Believe or not, there are more than 600 diseases of the central nervous system, including brain tumors, epilepsy, dementia such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease and stroke.

The top 3 of neurological diseases include
* Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease in the elderly, associated with the worsening of memory, thinking and behavior that severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life

* Bell's Palsy is a condition caused by sudden weakness or paralysis of facial muscles on one side of the face.

* Cerebral Palsy is a neurological disorder of children affecting a child's movement, motor skills, and muscle tone.

Conventionally, the treatment of neurological diseases is totally depending on the type of disease. However, the aim of the treatment is to improve quality of life, including lifestyle change, therapy to reduce the symptoms and restore some functions, pain relief, and medication to control the progression of the disease.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of neurological disorders with no side effects investigated the ginger effects on age-related neurological disorders (ANDs), including neurodegenerative diseases, are multifactorial disorders with a risk that increases with aging.

According to the analysis of the structure-activity relationships of ginger phytochemicals, ginger was effective for the treatment of ANDs by targeting different ligand sites.

Furthermore, ginger and its constituents, such as 6-gingerol, 6-shogaol, 6-paradol, zingerone, and dehydrozingerone, are effective for ameliorating the neurological symptoms and pathological conditions of ANDs through by modulating cell death or cell survival signaling molecules, observed through assay differentiation.

Based on these results, researchers in a joint study led by the Kyung Hee University, wrote, "we conclude that the active ingredients in ginger have therapeutic potential in ANDs".

Moreover, in order to reveal more information of the ginger anti ANDs property, researchers investigated the combined extract of Cyperus rotundus and Zingiber officinale (CP1) on the improvement of age-related dementia in rats with AF64A-induced memory deficits.

The study included male Wistar rats weighing 180-200 g orally given CP1 at doses of 100, 200 and 300 mg.kg-1 BW for a period of 14 days after bilateral intracerebroventricular administration of AF64A.

CP1 administration enhanced memory, increased neuronal density and decreased AChE activity and oxidative stress status, observed by the tested assays.

CP1 protected neurons integrity and viability by activating the protein associated with the regulation of meiosis, mitosis, and postmitotic functions in differentiated cells.

Dr. Sutalangka C, the lead scientist in the neurological team wrote, "These results suggested that CP1 might improve memory via enhanced cholinergic function and decreased neurodegeneration and oxidative stress".

Take all together, ginger may be considered functional alternatives for prevention and treatment of neurological disorders, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
