Functional Food Ginger, the Potential Anti Cancer Herbal Remedy with No Side Effects, According to Scientists

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by the irregular cell growth on the body tissue, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissue and do not exert any symptoms at the early stage.

However, at the later stage, the larger size tumor may press on the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, causing localized severe bleeding and pain accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers, including the unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal problems.

Most cancer cells at this stage can also travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

According to statistics, in 2018, approximately over1,700,000 cases of cancer were diagnosed worldwide. The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of cancer, Some researchers suggested the promotion of the Western diet over the past decades may be the major culprit that cause cancer in North America.

Dr. Timothy J Key, the lead scientist in the assessment of the Western diet risk of cancer, wrote,
"Diet-related factors are thought to account for about 30% of cancers in developed countries. Obesity increases the risk of cancers in the esophagus, colorectum, breast, endometrium, and kidney. Alcohol causes cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, and liver, and causes a small increase in the risk of breast cancer. Adequate intakes of fruit and vegetables probably lower the risk for several types of cancer, especially cancers of the gastrointestinal tract".

And, "Prudent advice is to eat a varied diet including plenty of fruit, vegetables, and cereals; to maintain healthy body weight with the help of regular physical activity, and to restrict consumption of alcohol".

The results clearly suggested that by replacing the Western diet with a traditional diet, the risk of cancer can be reduced substantially.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale)or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of cancer reviewed ginger anticancer activities.

In the differentiation of the phytochemistry, bioactivity, and molecular targets of ginger constituents, researchers found that the content of 6-shogaol is very low in fresh ginger, but significantly higher after steaming.

6-shogaol, a lead compound of ginger showed a significant anti-cancer activity according to several reports.

Therefore, 6-shogaol derivative synthesis, bioactivity evaluation, and computational docking would provide a promising opportunity to identify novel anticancer compounds.

Additionally, in order to reveal more information about 6-shogaol anticancer activity, researchers investigated the optimized reflux extraction conditions for achieving high 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol contents against cancers.

The optimum extraction condition for all responses was at 76.9 °C for 3.4 for both contents of 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol.

In cancer, the optimizing reflux extraction anticancer activity of extracts against HeLa cancer cells enhanced about 16.8% with a half inhibition concentration (IC50) value of optimized and unoptimized extract at concentrations of 20.9 and 38.4 μg/mL.

The optimized extract showed more distinct anticancer activities, particularly in HeLa cancer cells at a concentration of 40 μg/mL (P < 0.01) without toxicity to normal cells.

The results strongly suggested that by optimizing reflux extraction, ginger bioactive compound processes additional anticancer activity through the contents of the extracts.

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancers with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
