Herbal Turmeric Protects Your Vision Against Eye Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Eye diseases are the condition characterized by the change of vision, including a gradual loss of cells in the retina and neurons associated with the loss of vision.

Most eye diseases at the early stage are asymptomatic and painless with no change in the vision until the disease has become quite advanced.

People have an eye problem at one time and another. Most eye conditions are minor and go away sometimes without even noticing.

Most common causes of eye diseases are inflammation as a result of microbial infection, including bacterial, viral, parasitic or fungal infection, eye structure damage due to physical impact, genetic preposition due to mutation of certain associated with the vision, medical conditions such as diabetes and allergens.

In elderly, eye diseases are caused by optic nerve damage and visual field loss, hormone change, aging induce loss of flexible of eye small blood vessels and eye muscles due to aging,.... including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract.

According to statistics, approximately one person in three has some form of vision-reducing eye disease by the age of 65 in the US. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, cataract are the most prevalent eye disease found in the elderly.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a natural whole food or supplement for the treatment of eye disease, researchers examined curcumin, the major curcuminoid of the turmeric, used in many countries since ancient time for preventing and/or treating major anterior segment eye diseases.

In vitro and in vivo, curcumin showed beneficial effects on major anterior segment eye diseases, including the anti-angiogenesis effect in corneal diseases; anti-inflammation or anti-allergy effects in dry eye disease, conjunctivitis.

Injection of curcumin protected the eye against the attacks of free radicals and degradation in cataracts and neuroprotective effects in glaucoma.

In vitro, a novel nanocarrier formulation comprising Pluronic-F127 stabilized D-α-Tocopherol polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate nanoparticles, used to solubilize high concentrations (4.3 mg/mL) of curcumin exerted a significantly protect against cobalt chloride induced hypoxia and glutamate-induced toxicity on the retinal cell line (R28).

In vivo, the novel nanocarrier formulation protects the eye against models of ocular hypertension (OHT) and partial optic nerve transection (pONT).

The findings strongly support the notion of curcumin and curcumin combined with other supplements extensively used in many countries since ancient time for preventing and/or treating a multitude of diseases including eye disease.

Also, the topical application of CN twice-daily for three weeks significantly reduced retinal ganglion cell loss compared to controls.

Dr, the lead scientist said, "Our novel topical CN formulation has potential as an effective neuroprotective therapy in glaucoma and other eye diseases with neuronal pathology".

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of eye disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
