Sun protection is an action, including the use of sun-protective cream to protect skin damage against sun exposure.
UVB sunlight has been known to cause skin damage and cancer.
Long-term exposure to the sun can increase the risk of UV rays penetration through the outer skin layers into the deeper layers, leading to damage of skin cells.
In other words, long-term sun exposure can induce the alternation of skin cells, leading to actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma skin cancer.
There are many ways that you can protect your skin against sun damage
* Using subscreens that protect your skin against both UVA and UVB rays.
* Staying into the shade more often in the sunny day, particularly in the Summer.
* Putting on a shirt with a light color, that helps to reflect the sunlight. Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, or long skirts cover the most skin are recommended.
* Wearing a sunglass to protect your eyes.
Genetically, your skin types and natural skin color also have a strong impact on skin damage due to the exposure to the Sun. In fact, people with moderately pigmented and darkly pigmented skin can stand more exposure to UV compared to those with light skin color.
Compared to other tested preparations, dichloromethane extract of turmeric possessed the highest antioxidant activity in the protection against UVB induced skin oxidative stress.
Additional differentiation of these products, researchers found that the efficacy of ethanol and dichloromethane extracts of turmeric against sun exposure is attributed to their functions in stimulating the synthesis of Thioredoxin 1, an antioxidant protein that could protect human HaCaT keratinocytes from UV-induced DNA damage and cytotoxicity.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
By examining the activity of petroleum ether, dichloromethane, and ethanol extracts prepared from 15 Thai herb species, ethanol extracts and dichloromethane fractions isolated from turmeric were found to have highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents, compared to petroleum ether.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On finding a natural compound which processes sun protection, researchers examined the effects of 15 Thai plants extracts against UVB DNA damage and cytotoxicity in human keratinocytes, an epidermal cell which produces keratin.

Interestingly, the maximum UV absorptions were found in the ethanol extract of turmeric and in the dichloromethane extract of ginger.
In other words, turmeric protects the skin from UVB DNA damage and cytotoxicity in human keratinocytes by enhancing the host antioxidant defense against overexpression of ROS induced by sun exposure.
After taking other factors into account, Dr. Thongrakard V, the lead scientist said, "The present data support the utilization of turmeric and ginger extracts in anti-UV cosmetic pharmaceuticals".
Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound dichloromethane may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment skin damage caused by sun exposure, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
