Ashwagandha, The Anti-Aging Functional Herb In Men

By Kyle J. Norton

Aging is a natural process of getting older. Antiaging is a term that refers to slow down the aging process. In other words, anti-aging is an action that makes your appearance that looks younger than your biological age, inclduing the use of herbal medicine.

What causes aging? The question that has been asked throughout human history. While many theories try to answer the question by related aging to tear and wear of the body, others deal with how the organs and systems in the body develop and deteriorate over time, etc..

The antioxidant theory suggested that the accumulation of damage due to oxidative stress over a long-term can initiate DNA oxidation, leading to DNA methylation.

In hormonal theory, the decrease in hormone production gradually found in the human body may contribute to a major cause of aging progression.

In other words, reduced production of hormone affects the amount of hormone released into the bloodstream, leading to decreased functioning of the target organs and systems.

The somatic mutation theory even suggested aging is due to the inherited genes that come directly from the parents. Lifelong exposures to toxins, radiation or ultraviolet light, artificial ingredients, and unhealthy lifestyle, can increase the risk of cells mutation, leading to incorrectly DNA coping.

Some researchers suggested that improved nutrients intake may have a strong effect in delaying the progression of aging and reducing the risk of age-related diseases.

Dr. D. Marsman and colleagues wrote, "New clinical studies of healthy aging are needed and quantitative biomarkers are an essential component, particularly tools which can measure improvements in physiological integrity throughout life, thought to be a primary contributor to a long and productive life (a healthy “lifespan”).

And, "A framework for progress has recently been proposed in a WHO report which takes a broad, person-centered focus on healthy ageing, emphasizing the need to better understand an individual’s intrinsic capacity, their functional abilities at various life stages, and the impact by mental, and physical health, and the environments they inhabit.".

The results strongly suggested that if you follow a healthy diet with plenty of nutrients by focusing on calories, macronutrients, you may delay the process of biological aging.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent anti-aging compound, researchers examined the effects of Ashwagandha ( Withania somnifera) in the promotion of youthful vigor, including fatigue, vigor, and steroid hormones in aging men.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study included overweight men aged 40-70 years, with mild fatigue given a placebo or an ashwagandha extract (Shoden beads, delivering 21 mg of withanolide glycosides a day) for 8 weeks.

According to the tested analysis of 50 people completing the first 8-week period of the trial and 43 completing all 16 weeks, ashwagandha extract-treated group showed improvements in fatigue, vigor, and sexual and psychological well-being.

Furthermore, Ashwagandha intake demonstrated an 18% greater increase in DHEA-S and 14.7% greater increase in testosterone, compared to the placebo without affecting levels of cortisol and estradiol.

In other words, Ashwagandha increased the levels of male hormones compared to placebo.

Based on the finding, researchers concluded, " the intake of a standardized ashwagandha extract (Shoden beads) for 8 weeks was associated with increased levels of DHEA-S and testosterone, although no significant between-group differences were found in cortisol, estradiol, fatigue, vigor, or sexual well-being".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be used as an anti-aging functional herb, pending to the results from the large sample size and multicenter study
