By Kyle J. Norton

Eczema is a condition of inflammation caused by the damage to the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin, leading to skin dryness, flaking, erythema, infection, blistering, and cracking.

Most common symptoms of eczema include redness, itching, and the outbreak of lesions. If you experience some of the above symptoms, you may have eczema.

Eczema may be caused by a number of factors, including skin irritants induced by wool or synthetic clothing, soaps or detergents, cosmetics or perfumes, dust/sand, chemical solvents. extremes in temperatures, allergens such as plant pollen, molds, and animal dander.

Although the condition has been found in all ages, infant and children are at a greater risk for the onset of the disease.

In other words, most people have some of the aforementioned risk factors have never developed eczema.

According to the statistics, eczema has been found to affect approximately 17.8 million persons in the United States, a leading cause of morbidity compared to other conditions.

Most cases of atopic eczema are treated with the primary pharmacologic topical corticosteroids. If you use one of the above medicines, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measure.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to discover a natural compound or whole food for the treatment of erythematous eczema with no side effects, researchers compared the activity between a formulation of Vaccinium myrtillusseed oil, which is an effective local treatment for psoriatic lesions and BA formulation (containing Bosexil(®), INCI [International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients]: lecithin, Boswellia serrata resin extract).

Patients with erythematous eczema selected to the study were randomly assigned, in a 1:1:1 ratio, to Bosexil(®), V. myrtillus seed oil, or placebo. Changes in erythema were analyzed for.also calculated.based on the severity index scores in the eczema area.

Administration of both Bosexil(®) and the V. myrtillus seed oil showed a significant improvement compared to the placebo group.

In patients with eczema, V. myrtillus seed oil improved erythema in 77.8% of patients, compared to only 50% of cases in Bosexil(®).

Compared to no effect in patients in the placebo group with 10%, accompanied by the remaining 10% worsened erythema, V. myrtillus seed oil treatment did not induce any case of worsening, similar to those of Bosexil(®).

In other words, bilberry seed oil protected the skin against acute and chronic inflammatory skin condition, without causing any side effect when it is used as a topical agent.

The efficacy of the essential oil probably associated with various bioactive compounds, especially the anthocyanin.

Dr. Togni S the lead scientist said, "A topical formulation of Bosexil(®) may be promising for the treatment of psoriasis and erythematous eczema. Long-term studies are recommended to evaluate the adherence to this topical treatment and its clinical benefits in real life".

Taken altogether, bilberry seed oil may be considered a functioning remedy for the improvement of erythematous eczema, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
