Cabbage Processes Anti-Hyperglycemic Activity in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperglycemia is a condition of abnormally high blood sugar in the bloodstream characterized by improper use of insulin by the body or the damage of beta cells that do not make enough hormone insulin.

Hyperglycemia is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes associated with diabetic complications caused by uncontrol levels of blood glucose. Another hallmark is insulin resistance.

More precisely, poor management of blood glucose has been found in much incidences associated with hyperglycemia in diabetic patients, including a poor diet, physical inactivity choices, symptoms of medicines intake.

In people who use insulin or medications to control blood glucose, skipping or not taking enough glucose-lowering medication may also experience symptoms of hyperglycemia.

Most common symptoms of hyperglycemia are frequent urination, increased thirst, blurred vision, persistent fatigue, headache, shortness of breath, confusion, and coma.

A joint study led by the Bahria University Medical and Dental College suggested that the methanol extract of Brassica oleracea var. capitata (MEB, cabbage) may be effective against hypolipidemia.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

Believe it or not, hyperglycemia is preventable. By the change of diet with a meal plan help inclduing eating often, watching the intake of sugar and carbohydrates, limiting the use of alcohol, and eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, and whole grains accompanied by daily moderate exercise, you can avoid hyperglycemia,

Dr. Waqas Sami, the lead scientist in the examination of diet in the risk type 2 diabetes wrote, "
Dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle are the major factors for the rapidly rising incidence of DM among developing countries".

And, "Improvement in the elevated HbA1c level can be achieved through diet management; thus, the patients could be prevented from developing diabetes complications. Awareness about diabetes complications and consequent improvement in dietary knowledge, attitude, and practices lead to better control of the disease.".

Where hemoglobin A1c level is the measurement associated with the risk of diabetes.

The study included 28 healthy white rabbits of either sex induced hyperglycemia equally divided into four groups with treated and standard groups that were administered MEB (500 mg·kg(-1)) and glibenclamide (10 mg·kg(-1)), respectively for 15 and 30 days.

Additionally, the animals of the normal and diabetic controls also received normal saline 1 mL/day equivalent to the volume of doses given to the test and standard animals.

According to the tested assays
* The MEB administration demonstrated a decrease of 106.6 mg·dL(-1) in fasting blood glucose, compared to diabetic control.

* The efficacy of MEB was comparable to those of glibenclamide in modifying the fasting blood glucose.

Fasting blood glucose used in the oral glucose tolerance test to measure the levels of blood glucose that is taken after an overnight fast. A fasting blood sugar level of less than 5.6 mmol/L is normal.

However, A fasting blood sugar level from 5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L or higher is considered prediabetes and diabetes, respectively.

These results suggest the methanol extract from collard greens processes a hypoglycemic effect in a diabetes animal model.

Dr. Assad T, the lead scientist said, "These results suggest the potential of MEB as a hypoglycemic ... agent".

Taken altogether, cabbage may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hyperglycemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
