Turmeric, the Best Antioxidant Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

Antioxidants keep our bodies functioning properly by reducing the risk of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

The expression of oxidative stress is a medical condition characterized by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host tissue.

In some cases, this reaction also is caused long-term accumulation of toxic substances in the body, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the effects of curcumin supplementation on oxidative stress and antioxidant defense enzymes in human subjects.

The meta-analysis reviewing the randomized controlled trials published in English in any year in Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Central, Scopus, and Google Scholar, compared the treatment of curcumin to either placebo or standard of care or no intervention.

According to the examing of 127 titles and abstracts identified in 17 articles, including participants, ranged from 22 to 160 across the included studies, curcumin significantly reduced oxidative stress markers MDA, and increased superoxide dismutase, catalase,, and glutathione peroxidase, compared to control.

Furthermore, in subgroup analyses, curcumin could significantly reduce MDA levels with or without use of piperine, compared to only increase the SOD level in presence of piperine.

Based on the results, researchers said, "The administration of piperine with curcumin may enhance the efficacy of curcumin on antioxidant defense system".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements to enhance the levels of antioxidants in the host, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
