Ashwagandha Protects the Male Reproductive Functioning Against Arsenic Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Arsenic is a toxic chemical found in many minerals, usually in combination with other chemicals, including sulfur and metals.

Arsenic exposure can be acute or chronic
* Acute arsenic toxicity is caused by arsenic toxicity that induces symptoms of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and severe diarrhea. In severe cases, the acute condition also causes encephalopathy and peripheral neuropathy.

* Chronic arsenic toxicity results in multisystem disease.

Chronic arsenic toxicity is also associated with liver and prostate cancer.

Recent studies suggested chronic arsenic toxicity also has a link to diabetes, neurological effects, cardiac disorders, and reproductive organs.

Infertility is defined as the inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse or can not carry the pregnancy to term.

The condition affects over 5 million couples alone in the U. S. and many times more in the world. Because of unawareness of treatments, only 10% seek help from a professional specialist.

Fertility is a natural process to ensure the survival of human species. Through natural selection, we produce many offsprings when the reproductive system works at its peak in a suitable environment.

Male infertility is a medical condition associated with the male's inability to cause pregnancy in a fertile female.

Male infertility accounts for 40–50% of all cases of infertility, affecting over 7% of all men.
Most cases of male infertility are the results of deficiencies in the semen, and semen quality that lead to reduced function of male fecundity.

The exact causes of male infertility are not identified. However, abnormal sperm production or function due to genetic defects, and medical conditions such as diabetes, or infectious diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, mumps are some of the prevalent factors that are involved in the increased risk of male infertility.

On finding a potent compound for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with arsenic
toxicity, researchers examined the ameliorative effect of Withania somnifera on arsenic-induced testicular toxicity.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

Selected male Charles Foster rats were exposed to arsenic toxicity in the form of sodium arsenite by administered orally to for 45 days following the injection of the ethanolic root extract of Withania somnifera for 30 days.

According to the results, before the injection of the extract, sodium arsenite rats showed a decrease in sperm counts and sperm motility accompanied by an increased incidence of sperm abnormalities and hormonal imbalance that lead to infertility.

After the extract administration, Withania somnifera not only significantly reversed all the abnormal parameters through it's antioxidant and rejuvenating property but also maintained the cellular integrity of testicular cells.

In other words, Withania somnifera extract protected the integrity and viability of the testicular cells against the arsenic toxicity.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Withania somnifera possesses phytoremedial effect. It is one of the best antidotes against arsenic-induced reproductive toxicity".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the protection of male reproductive organ functioning, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study
