The Health Benefits of Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention of diseases, researchers examined the myriad health benefits of omega-3 PUFAs.

* Cardiovascular diseases
Cardiovascular disease is a group of conditions triggered by the abnormal function of the heart and blood vessels abnormality.

The 3 most common forms of cardiovascular disease in North America are coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and carotid artery disease caused by plaques build-up of plaque in the arteries that supply blood to the heart, the arms and legs, and the brain, respectively.
* Diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

Most common types of diabetes are
**Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form of diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

** Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose due to either cell in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

* Cancer
Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.

The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.
* Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer. Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal. 

According to statistics, over 25 million people in the world today are affected by dementia and most are suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

* Dementia
About 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age. Dementia is the loss of mental ability that is severe enough to interfere with people's every life and Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people.

* Depression
Depression is a normal response as part of our daily lives such as the loss of s job, the death of a loved one, and illness. Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing at an alarming rate. Depression may be a mental health disorder that can affect the way you eat, sleep, and the way you feel about yourself.

Furthermore, omega 3 fatty acids improved fetal health including slightly increase a baby’s weight at birth and the length of time the baby is in the womb, both of which may be beneficial. Breast milk contains DHA.

However, researchers explained, "there are also some controversies about their efficacy and certain benefits to human health".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the promotion of health benefits, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
