Healthy Food Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica) Kills Colorectal Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a group of chronic and medical associated with abnormal cell growth in a specific tissue of an organ, due to the alternation of DNA.

A primary tumor or original tumor is a tumor first arose and progression to yield a cancerous mass.

Cancer cells that grow to its tumor size, can invade and kill their neighbor cells by producing abnormal or excessive signaling chemicals (hormones or cytokines) which upset the normal chemical balance and alter the metabolic pathways, leading to disordered and violent cellular behavior.

At the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic.
Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon or rectum due to the alternation of cells DNA in the colon or rectum.

Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer.

Overall, the lifetime risk of colorectal cancer developing is 1 in 22 (4.49%) in men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) in women.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women compared to other types of cancer.

The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Approximately, 140,000 cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in the US in 2018. Colorectal cancer also causes the death of over 50, 000 people, representing 8.3% of total cancer death.

In general, the 5-year survival rate for people with colorectal cancer is 65%. However, the 5-year survival rate of localized colorectal cancer is about 90%.

Rectal cancer is the slowest growing cancer. Therefore, most cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed at the advanced stage in the older population.

Rectum formed part of the colon acts as a temporary storage site for feces, before eliminating them as feces.

Rectal cancer is a malignant tumor that starts from the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissues of the rectum.

The most common symptoms of rectum cancer are a change in your bowel habits, such as diarrhea, constipation or more frequent bowel movements, dark or red blood in the stool, mucus in stool, abdominal pain and painful bowel movements accompanied by the general symptoms found in other types of cancer.

Colon cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing in a predictable way.

According to the statistic by the American Cancer Society, in the US, there are
97,220 new cases of colon cancer diagnosed in 2018. The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

The causes of colon cancer are unknown but certain risk factors, such as genetic preposition and chronic inflammation induced by colonic diseases are associated with the onset of the disease.

Fig is a species of F. carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding a whole food for the prevention and treatment of cancers, researchers investigated the antitumor activity of Ficus carica extracts and latex.

According to the tested differentiation, in vitro, the peel, pulp, leaves, whole fruit and latex extracts of Ficus carica exerted significant antiproliferative effects on HCT-116 (IC50 values 239, 343, 177, 299, 206 µg/ml) and HT-29 cells (IC50 values 207, 249, 230, 261, 182 µg/ml) after 48h of treatment.

Furthermore, treatment with different doses of extracts of Ficus carica results in apoptosis in both HT-29 and HCT-116 cancer cells.

Moreover, the leaves and latex extracts of Ficus carica demonstrated the strongest antiproliferative activities.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Overall, our results showed that these natural products are strong apoptosis inducers which suggest their use of for therapeutic purposes".

Taken altogether, common fig or fig may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancers, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
