Phytochemical Tocopherols Promotes Bone Collagen Formation Against Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition associated with low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue.

The disease is most common in older adults as the result of the bone made by the body can not cover the bone loss due to an increased serum of osteoclast mediator involved in bone resorption.

Consequently, the bone in osteoporotic patients become weak and breaking easily from a fall.
Believe it or not, in serious cases, bone can also be broken due to sneezings or minor bumps.

According to the statistics provided by the International Osteoporosis Foundation, approximately 44 million U.S. women and men aged 50 and older suffer from osteoporosis and low bone mass.

There are over 200 million women worldwide affected by osteoporosis, including one-tenth of women aged 60, one-fifth of women aged 70, two-fifths of women aged 80 and two-thirds of women aged 90.

Dr. Daniel König, the lead scientist in examing bone collagen formation in the risk of osteoporosis, wrote, " the intake of SCP increased BMD in postmenopausal women with a primary, age-related reduction of BMD. In addition, SCP supplementation was associated with a favorable shift in bone markers, indicating increased bone formation and reduced bone degradation".

In other words, the intake of specific collagen supplements may increase collagen's bioavailability and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of osteoporosis, researchers examined the effect of Tocotrienol-Rich Fraction (TRF), the δ-T3 rich oil extracted from Annatto on bone collagen formation.

According to the analysis, the δ-T3 rich oil extracted from Annatto was the most effective and significantly increased LOX expression which is required for the formation of bone collagen cross-links.

Furthermore, TRF treatment decreased the expression of de-novomethyltransferases (DNMTs), DNMT3A and DNMT3B in the induction of bone loss.

Moreover, TRF significantly inhibited JAK2 activation and decreased expression of Fli1, a transcription factor of DNMTs in the induction of impaired osteoclastogenesis against the promotion of osteoblast differentiation in the formation of bone.

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement or improvement of bone collagen formation against the risk of osteoporosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
