Herbal Aloe vera may have a profound and positive effect on reducing risk and treatment of colon cancer, with no side effects, some scientists suggested.
Colon Cancer is a condition characterized by the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon.
Most cases of colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. In the early, as the cancer cells are only found in the outmost layer of the localized linning, patients may not experience any symptoms.
However, in the advanced stage, the colon cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue or organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
The most common sites of metastasis for colon or rectal cancer is the liver and lung.
According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. Every year approximately, 90000 new cases of colon cancer. 43,000 new cases of rectal cancer are diagnosed, leading to the death of 50,000 patients.
The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.
The 5-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90%. About 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.
Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of colon cancer such as age, family and personal history, genetic preposition, smoking, alcohol, being overweight or obese are, many researchers suggested that the most common cause of colon cancer in the Western world is due to the promotion of the Western diet.
Dr. Jessie A. Satia, the lead scientist in the examine the dietary patterns and colon cancer risk in Whites and African Americans in North Carolina strongly indicated "Compared to the Western-Southern pattern, the fruit-vegetable and metropolitan patterns were associated with more healthful dietary behaviors (e.g., higher vegetable intake and lower red meat consumption), and demographic/lifestyle characteristics typically correlated with low colon cancer risk, for example, lower BMI, higher education, and higher NSAID use".
And, "The fruit-vegetable pattern was significantly inversely associated with colon cancer risk in Whites (OR = 0.4, 95% CI = 0.3–0.6) and the metropolitan pattern with a nonsignificant 30% risk reduction in both Whites and African Americans after adjustment for education".
These results strongly suggested that people who follow the diet pattern of the Western diet are at a substantial risk of the disease. In other words, the risk of colon cancer is significantly reduced for people who follow the diet with high fruits and vegetable and low red meat and processed foods.
Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits.
The medical plant has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated of cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.
The main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include Aloe-Emodin, amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient or remedy for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology examine the anti-colon cancer effects on Aloe-emodin (AE), a natural anthraquinone.
In colon cancer cell lines, AE inhibited cell proliferation by the cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase and protein associated with cellular proliferation and division.
AE suppressed the phorbol-12-myristyl-13-acetate (PMA), a diester of phorbol in the promotion of promotes tumor expression through migration and invasion.
AE also inhibited the mRNA expression of colon cancer cells and the matrixes involved malignant tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis and gene associated with the signaling in the formation and dissemination of a range of cancers.
Furthermore, EA inhibited the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) expression in forming a new blood vessel in the promotion of endothelial cell migration/invasion.
Moreover, AE also suppressed the protein complex that controls the transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival.

AE also induced cancer cell death through stimulating the function of proteins associated with pro apoptosis.
In order to obtain additional information related to the Aloe vera anti-colon cancer activity, researchers analyzed the molecular mechanisms involved in the antimigratory and antiangiogenic activity of this hydroxy anthraquinone.
Researchers wrote in the summary of the experiment, "These data indicate that AE target multiple molecules responsible for cellular invasion, migration and angiogenesis" and Inhibitory effect on angiogenic and metastatic regulatory processes make AE a sensible candidate as a specific blocker of tumor-associated events".
Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera processed a major bioactive compound Aloe emodin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of colon cancer.
