Whole Food Onion Kills Renal Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The kidney is an essential organ that not only filters out blood but also regulates electrolytes, blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produces hormone calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin,

Formed part of the urinary system, kidney filters blood with billions of glomeruli by separating the cells of blood from plasma. During the process, some necessary substances are reabsorbed back into the blood, while others wastes, such as urea and ammonium are stored into pelvis then into the ureter to the bladder.

Kidney cancer is a medical condition caused by malignant cells of the lining of the tubules in the kidney.

At the advanced stage, cancer kidney cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organ through the circulation of blood and fluid, leading to secondary metastasis.

Kidney cancer epidemiologically has been found to spread to the lung.

The exact causes of kidney cancer are not identified. However, the below prevalent factors have been found to induce a higher risk of the disease.
* Gender
Men are twice at risk to develop renal cell carcinoma than women.

* Aging
The onset of renal cell carcinoma has a peak incidence in the 50 but today, the disease has a tendency to affect the younger age population.

* Smoking
Smoking increases the risk of renal cell carcinoma.

* Obesity
Obesity has been associated with an increased risk of renal cell cancer among women, and increased BMI is equally strongly associated with an increased risk of renal cell cancer among men and women.

*  Family history
If one of your direct family members has it, your risk of developing renal cell carcinoma increases.

* Chemical toxins
Exposure to certain environment chemical toxins may increase the risk of renal cell carcinoma.

* Cystic kidney disease
This type of genetic disorder of the kidneys accompanied by a renal deficiency can increase the risk of developing kidney cancer.

Because of less nervous in the kidney and location, the early stage of renal cell carcinoma is very hard to detect. In some case, the tumor can grow without causing any pain and discomfort. Most common symptoms are abdominal pain, back pain, blood in the urine, flank pain, anemia, varicocele enlargement, and hypertension.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of kidney cancer

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste, onion is found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of renal cancer, researchers examined the effects of fisetin, a natural compound found in fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, apples, cucumbers, and onions in human renal carcinoma (Caki) cells.

According to the tested assays, Fisetin induced cancer cell apoptosis by causing cell cycle arrest on the sub-G1 phase.

Futhermore, Fisetin also induced cancer cell apoptosis by activating the proteins (cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) associated with cell death programming.

Moreover, caspases, the major effectors of apoptosis were also activated by the injection of Fisetin.

Additionally, the efficacy of Fisetin in the inhibition of the renal cancer cell line was also attributed by inducing death receptor 5 (DR5) expression and promoting the gene expression of tumor suppressor (p53).

However, in the differentiation of the effect of another gene (CHOP expression) associated with cellular stress and involved in mediating apoptosis and expression of ROS cytotoxicity, researchers found that fisetin-induced apoptosis without the assistance of CHOP and ROS.

Based on the finding, researchers said, " fisetin induced apoptosis through p53 mediated up-regulation of DR5 expression at the transcriptional level"

Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with remedies may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of renal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
