Carrot, The Functional Food Which Reduces Gastric/Stomach Cancer Risk By 26%

Kyle J. Norton

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in reduced risk, progression and treatment of gastric cancer, some scientists suggested.

Gastric cancer is a slowly developed condition characterized by cell growth uncontrollably and disorderly in the stomach tissue. At he later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy cells of the tissue and organs.

According to the US cancer society, approximately over 26000 new cases of gastric cancer are diagnosed in 2018 inducing death of over 10,000 patients.

The risk that a man and woman will develop gastric cancer in their lifetime is 1 in 95 and 1 in 154 respectively.

The exact causes of gastric cancer are unknown, some researchers suggested that older people, male, heavy smokers, people who with family history of gastric cancer and certain ethnic groups such as
Asian (especially Korean or Japanese), South American, or Belarusian descent are at increased prevalent risk of gastric cancer.

Interestingly, during past several decades, the numbers of common gastric cancer are showed a tendency of receding, however, at the same time, cancer at the area where the top part of the stomach  meets the lower end of the swallowing tube (esophagus) has increased rapidly.

Also, some medical conditions such as lymphoma, H. pylori bacterial infections,  tumors in  digestive system and stomach polyps are  associated to risk of the disease.

If you experiment of persistent feeling floated after eating, and small meal after eating, heart burn, indigestion,... and stomach pain accompanied of general symptoms of cancer such as unexplained weight loss, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of gastric cancer..

Carrot, a root vegetable with orange color is a sub spices of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

In the investigation the hypothesis of "eating carrots may play a major role in the prevention of gastric cancer", researchers at the joint study lead by the J Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences conducted a medical literature review selected from the data bases of including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Persian databases like Scientific Information Database (SID) and IranMedx, those studies satisfied the guidelines and criteria showed that risk of gastric cancer reduced by 26% with the consumption of carrots.

After taking into account of other co factors, researchers warranted that the result does not showed the possibility of a publication bias, according to the funnel graph by comprehensive meta analysis/2.0 software.

Although without mentioning the amount intake daily, these results showed an inverse relationship between the consumption of carrots and the risk of gastric cancer.

Furthermore, in the analysis of the effect of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) overgrowth in risk of gastric cancer, scientists found that injection of gene of UreB into carrot by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation expressed a significant effect in regenerated carrot plants the expressed UreB protein accounted for 25mug/g roots in reduced expression of H. pylori.

The same application also showed a similar effect in immune response in inhibition of infection of bacterial Helicobacter pylori in mice.

These result suggested that certain chemical compounds in carrot may consist a strong anti micro organism activity by protecting the plant against bacterial infection.

Therefore, UreB transgenic carrot can be potentially used as an edible vaccine for controlling H. pylori but also ameliorated risk of the bacteria in induction of gastric cancer.

The illustration of above differentiation were supported by the study conducted by the Graduate School of Fudan University.

According to the evaluation of the Wuxing soup containing Daikon Radish Leaves (Green element) Daikon Radish (White element) Carrots (Red color element) Burdock Root (Yellow element) Shittake Mushroom (Black element), application of the soup to the human gastric adenocarcinoma cell line (SGC-7901) expressed a huge inhibitory activity in reduced tumor cells proliferation in a time and dose dependent manner.

More importantly, Wuxing soup induced tumor cell death through apoptotic morphological changes and DNA ladder of the tested SGC-7901 cells.

Additionally, used combination with calcium inhibitor Bapta AM, an intracellular calcium chelator not only exerted a strong effect in  reduced the cancer apoptotic rate but also protected SGC-7901 cells in a dose dependent manner.

Dr. Mo F, the lead author said, "Wuxing soup has an effective inhibition on cancer cells, and can induce SGC-7901 cells to apoptosis by calcium".

Taken together, carrot may be considered as a function food in ameliorated risk and used combination with conventional standard treatment for gastric cancer.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of gastric cancer will be necessary to complete the picture of carrot's anti cancer possibilities.
