Asparagus, The Functional Food Which Normalizes Levels of Blood Cholesterol and Prevents Lipid Peroxidation

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Asparagus may have a potential and therapeutic effect in normalize levels of blood cholesterol in patients who were diagnosed hyperlipidemia, some scientists suggested.

Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help you digest fat.

However too much of it can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition characterized by abnormally elevated levels lipids (fats) in the blood, including cholesterol and triglyceride.

In other words, hyperlipidemia can also defined as a raised LDL-c, triglyceride-rich lipoprotein excess, and increased lipoprotein(a) as well as lowered HDL-c, according to the secondary causes of hyperlipidemia by Dr. Stone NJ.

The exact causes of abnormally elevated levels lipids (fats) are debatable. Some researchers suggested that certain medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, and hypothyroidism may also have a positive influence on the onset of the syndrome.

According to the Guangxi Medical University, in the comparisoeroln of the effect of hyperglycemia among the Han who are the largest group and Bai Ku Yao who are the isolated subgroup of the Yao minority, researchers after considering other con and co founders at the end of the experiment said, "The prevalence of hyperlipidemia was significantly lower among ethnic Bai Ku Yao than among ethic Han individuals, which might mainly be attributed to the more favorable dietary patterns, lifestyle choices, and physical activity levels in the former ethnic group".

These results strongly insisted that unhealthy diet and life style play important roles in initiation of the onset of hyperlipidemia.

Most patients with hyperlipidemia do not experience any symptoms. Hyperlipidemia is usually detected during a routine blood test, or following a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke..

Asparagus is a flowering plant belong to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, and northwest Germany, northern Africa and western Asia.

The plant or food has been used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.

In the study of the effects of asparagus (500 mg/kg body weight (bw)/day) and their partially purified fractions in flavonoids (50 mg/kg bw/day), saponins (5 mg/kg bw/day) and dietary fiber (500 mg/kg bw/day) on oxidative status and on lipid profile in rats fed a cholesterol-rich diet, researchers found after 5 weeks, administration of asparagus improves the plasma lipid profile and prevents hepatic oxidative damage under conditions of hypercholesterolemia through its bioactive constituents, especially dietary fiber and flavonoids.

Furthermore, treated groups also exhibited a significant increase in enzyme activity from multiple hepatic antioxidants produced by the host, including: superoxide dismutase, catalase, and gluthhatione reductase/peroxidase as well as a decrease in MDA concentrations in compared to HCD group.

These results showed that asparagus ant its bioactive compounds also process anti oxidative and lipidperoxidative activities.

Moreover, additonal analysis also found that intake of asparagus does not have any effect on levels of HDL cholesterol.

Dr. García MD, the lead author at the final report, wrote, " the intake of green asparagus from Andalusia (Spain) helps to regulate plasma lipid levels and prevents oxidative damage in hypercholesterolemic conditions".

However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers clinical studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the condition will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus hypolipidemic possibilities.
