Kyle J. Norton (Master of Nutrients, All right reserved)

Yoga, an integrated form of exercise may be used for reduced risk and treatment of neurological  disorders, some scientists suggested.

Neurological disorders are medical condition characterized by any disorder of the nervous system caused by structural, biochemical or electrical abnormalities.

There are many forms of neurological  disorders. The most common types of the disease include neurodegenrative disease, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease, epilepsy. multiple sclerosis and Migraines.

According to the Medical press, globally, the burden of neurological disorders (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, epilepsy etc) has increased substantially over the past 25 years. These may be results of over 25 years of economic expansion that have increased living standard of billion of people in the Southeast Asian region.

Today, people who have made a lots of money in that region have abandoned traditional diet with abundant vegetables and fruits and replaced them  with Western diet which is considered as a risk factor of neurological  disorders.

A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) showed that neurological disorders, ranging from epilepsy to Alzheimer disease, from stroke to headache, affect up to one billion people worldwide. And, An estimated 6.8 million people diet every year as a result of neurological disorders.

In Europe alone, neurological diseases cost the health care system an estimation of 139 billion euros in 2004.

Yoga, the ancient  technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been well known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In a review of literature published online, including randomized, controlled trials with yoga as the central component of the intervention, researchers filed the following reports
*  6 selected trial expressed a significant effect of yoga lessons in reduced symptoms and treatment of neurological disorders
* 10 out 13 trials chosen indicated a positive effect in use of yoga as as an ancillary treatment of in patients with psychiatric disorders.

Researchers also note that Trials were excluded in these review if yoga was not the central component of the intervention.

These results suggested that long term participation in yoga affects the adrenal gland of central nervous system in production of hormones which have strong implications on stress and anxiety, such as serotonin, adrenaline and cortisol.

Further more, yoga meditation and posture also enhanced blood circulation to the central nervous system, thus reducing risk of neurological disorders.

Also in the review of article used comprehensive scientific, evidence-based studies to analyze the efficacy of various basic and applied aspects of yoga in disease prevention and health promotion, particularly in neurological disorders from various resources including PubMed, Ovid, MD-Consult, USC, and U.C.L.A. libraries, researchers at the USC, after adjusting to other co confound factors, indicated that patients who participated in the class of yoga demonstrate statistically encouraging physiological and psychological improvements in the aforementioned neurological disorders.

Additionally, in the investigate promotion of mind-body medicine for health promotion, disease prevention and as a possible treatment modality for neurological disorders, researchers at the S-VYASA University performed a comprehensive search in the PubMed/Medline found that 94 out of 700 examine demonstrated a strong improvement in patients with various neurological disorders

Martin Jones, the lead author in the article of Yoga for Neurological Health, For those with MS, Parkinson's, or Other Neurological Disorders wrote, " (Yoga) Exercises that train neuromuscular coordination, as well as draw vitality and strength to all parts of the body" and "Techniques to draw on the healing aspects of the parasympathetic (“rest and repose”) nervous system and meditation to retrain the brain and create more efficient pathways to the pre-frontal lobes, the most highly evolved part of our nervous system, where we experience our most inspired, creative thinking and elevated levels of consciousness".

Base on information collected, there is no doubt that yoga may be considered as secondary form of exercise used conjunction with standard application for reduced symptoms and treatment of neurological  disorders
