Herbal Angelica Inhibits the Parameters Associated with Anemia in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Anemia is a condition of deficiency of hemoglobin, leading to not enough red blood cells in the body. The function of hemoglobin is to carry oxygen from the lung to the body' s cells.

Depletion of the stored iron can cause reduced hemoglobin production, leading to iron deficiency anemia.

Iron deficiency is simply as too little iron in the body for the production of hemoglobin.

Anemia occurs when there isn't enough hemoglobin to transport oxygen to the body cells and organs need, leading to symptoms of irritability, fatigue, shortness of breath, low blood pressure, etc.

Approximately 2 out of 1000 people in Canada are considered an iron deficiency.

Anemia can be classified into acute and chronic anemia
* Anemia due to chronic disease is a type of blood disorder as a result affected by one or more chronic medical condition(s), causing reduced red blood cell production.
** Microcytic, hypochromic anemia
Microcytic, hypochromic anemia is chronic anemia caused by many conditions including iron deficiency, Beta-Thalassemia trait, lead poisoning, chronic illness or inflammation, and sideroblastic anemia (Korones & Cohen, 1997; Wu et al., 2002)

** Macrocytic anemia
Macrocytic anemia is a condition of not having enough healthy red blood cells in the body to transport oxygen and nutrients to the body tissue and organ as a result of the insufficiency of vitamin B12.

** Normocytic anemia
Normocytic anemia is a common disease, occurring to men and women over 85 years old as a result of low red blood cell volume as a result of a decreased production of normal-sized red blood cells, and increased destruction or loss of red blood cells, deficiency of vitamin B6, B12, etc.

** Hemolytic anemia
Hemolytic anemia is a condition of not enough red blood cells in the blood, as a result of the premature destruction due to abnormal breaking down of red blood cells (hemolysis) either in the blood vessels or elsewhere in the body.

* Acute anemia denotes is short term drops of red blood red cell production. Most of the time, it is caused by heavy internal bleeding or blood loss due to injury. It is a serious problem, in most cases, it requires medical attention immediately.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with red blood cells, scientists examined the effects of ganggui buxue tang (DGBX, Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Astragali and Rhizoma Coptidis) on anemia.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the results of immune-induced AA mice used as an animal model, and the immunosuppressive agent, Ciclosporin A (CsA), was used as a positive control that was treated by the decoction,
* DGBX treatment significantly increased the production of whole blood cells in peripheral blood (PB); inhibit the expansion of Th1 and Th17 cells in the tested animals.

* Furthermore, DGBX increased the differentiation of Th2 and Tregs cells, regulated the expression levels of T-bet, GATA-3, RORĪ³ in the immune cells, and pro-inflammatory cytokines, and decrease the expression levels of key molecules in the Jak/Stat signaling pathway involved in the process of immunity.

Collectively, DGBX can regulate the differentiation of T lymphocytes that orchestrates the immunosuppressive and hematogenic functions on AA mice against the onset of anemia.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "DGBX might be a good candidate for inclusion in a randomized study for AA with more data on the possible side effects and doses used in humans".

Taken altogether, herbal angelica alone or combination with other herbal medicines may be considered anti-anemic remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
