Elecampane (Inula helenium) Eradicates Colorectal Cancer Cells in Vitro and Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue of organs.

The colon-rectum formed a part of the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon or rectum due to the alternation of cells DNA.

Colon cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing in a predictable way.

Rectal cancer is also the slowest growing cancer. Therefore, most cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed at the advanced stage in the older population.

Although there are a number of risk factors associated with the onset of colorectal cancer, some researchers suggested the increased obesity in the general population induced colorectal cancer over the past few decades may have a strong implication by the promotion of Western diet.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women compared to other types of cancer.

The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Approximately, 140,000 cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in the US in 2018. Cancer also causes the death of over 50, 000 people, representing 8.3% of total cancer death.

Being overweight or obese. smoking, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol drinking, the increase in age, family and personal history, genetic preposition are some of the prevalent risks of the disease.

In general, the 5-year survival rate for people with colorectal cancer is 65%. However, the 5-year survival rate of localized colorectal cancer is about 90%.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of colonic diseases, scientists the potential beneficial effects of Inula viscosa (IV) leaf aqueous extract on the growth of colorectal cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.

Elecampane, also known as Horse-heal (Inula helenium) is a perennial composite plant, genus nulla, belonging to Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe, and Asia.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine in treating bronchitis or emphysema, night sweats, pulmonary tuberculosis, irritating cough, catarrhal discharges, etc.

According to tested analysis,
* IV extract that exposure of colorectal cancer cells significantly reduced cell viability in a dose and time-dependent manner.

* Treatment of cells with 300 μg/ml of IV extract induced apoptosis by activating pro-apoptotic caspases.

* In vivo, treatment with 150 or 300 mg/kg IV extract inhibited tumor growth in mice transplanted with MC38 cells and the tumors' weight and volume were significantly (P < 0.001) reduced when compared to the untreated control group.

* Furthermore, IV treatment also inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis in vitro and vivo.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, " (The) active doses of IV extract are not toxic. Further studies are needed in order to identify the structure of the active compounds ".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of colorectal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
