Omega-3 Fatty Acids Improve Patients with Heart Failure

By Kyle J. Norton

The heart is a four-chambered, hollow muscle and a double-acting pump located in the chest between the lungs is a muscular organ in the human body.

The heart formed an important part of the circulatory system that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body and assist in the removal of metabolic wastes.

According to the statistic provided by the American Heart Foundation, on average, an American dies of CVD every 38 seconds. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounted for 840,678 deaths in the US in 2016 and the condition also claims more lives each year than all forms of cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease combined

In 2016, cardiovascular diseases cause the death of 2,303 deaths each day, in the US.
Coronary heart disease (CHD) kills over 370,000 people annually.

The most common heart disease in North America is CHD, the type of heart disease caused by plaque buildup on artery walls, leading to narrow, thickens and stiffens arteries. Some researchers suggested that the causes of plaque build-up on the arterial wall were the results of several factors including an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, being overweight and smoking.

Heart failure (HF) is a medical condition associated with the reduced function of the heart muscle that can not maintain blood flow to meet the body's needs, leading to symptoms of
* Shortness of breath and excessive tiredness are caused by the congestion in your lungs in the process of inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide.
And
* Leg swelling is a condition caused by fluid to back up in your lungs and in other parts of your body such as your ankles.

Believe it or not, approximately 600, 000 Canadian are living with heart failure or 16% of the entire population.

Conventionally, there is no cure for heart failure, the most common treatment is focusing on lifestyle changes and managing the condition to improve quality of life.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of heart diseases, researchers examined the effects of long-chain omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on omega-3 levels on chronic heart failure (CHF).

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot clinical trial included a total of 108 patients with CHF from June 12, 2014, to May 19, 2016; 80 (74.1%), using a 400/200 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)/docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) fish oil at 2 g and an almost pure EPA at 2 g daily, compared with a matched placebo for 12 weeks for patients with CHF and major depressive disorder.

Based on the results of differentiation,
* Omega-3 supplementation resulted in significant increases in omega-3 levels in red blood cell counts, corresponding to a particular compound of omega-3.

* Changes in cognitive depressive symptoms and social function were in favor of the omega-3 supplementation.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention of heart failure, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
