Cabbage Inhibits Human Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancers are a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue and organs caused by the alternation of cell DNA.

At the advanced stage, malignant cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy cells and tissues.

There are many types of cancer, depending on the location where cancer begins.

As of today, researchers do not know what are the exact cause of cancers. however many researchers believe, exposure to environmental toxins, genetic mutation, and an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the diseases.

Healthy cells become cancerous if they grow uncontrollably and disorderly out of range of a normal healthy cell population which can only divide between 40 and 60 times.

According to the Hayflick limit theory, most cell survival is totally dependent on the telomeres on the ends of each chromosome.

Every time, healthy cells undergo division, the telomeres are shortened. Once the telomeres shorten to a critical length, the cells will die off. However, cancer cells can divide indefinitely.

According to the statistic provided by the UK Cancers research, in 2012, an estimated 14.1 million new cases of cancer occurred worldwide.

Sadly, more than 4 in ten cancers occurring worldwide are in countries at a low or medium level of the Human Development Index (HDI).

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistic composite index of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators, according to the definition.

In 2018, over 1,7 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed in the US, and approximately over 600,000 patients will die from the diseases.

The four most common types of cancer, occurring worldwide are lung, female breast, bowel and prostate cancer.

Early diagnosis as always is the best way to improve survival rate. Depending on types of cancer, most cancers have a 100% 5 years survival rate, if they are diagnosed at the stage of 0 and 1.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On finding a natural wholefood for the prevention of malignant tumors, researchers examined the effects of pierisin, a protein purified from pupae of the cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae on the human gastric cancer TMK-1 cell line and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

According to the results of differentiation,
* Pierisin showed cytotoxic effects in all the human cells tested, with IC50 values ranging from 0.043 ng/ml to 150 ng/ml.

* Compared to other cancer cell lines, the cervical carcinoma cell line, HeLa, was the most sensitive to pierisin, showing a 1000-fold less IC50 value than that of HUVECs.

* Furthermore, pierisin clearly induced apoptotic cell death in most cancer cell lines and HUVECs through multiple different pathways including the proinflammatory, tumor-suppressive and immunomodulatory pathways.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Pierisin may thus be a promising new candidate for cancer therapy".

Taken altogether, cabbage may process anti-cancer activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
