Angelica Sinensis Processes Anti-Apoptotic and Anti-Inflammatory Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Apoptosis is a process to induce the death of cells formed part of human normal and controlled growth or development.

In other words, in normal cells, apoptosis is an orderly process that occurs during development and aging and as a homeostatic mechanism to maintain cell populations in tissues.

Cancer cells prevent the process of efficiently eliminate dysfunctional cells.

More precisely, defective apoptotic (programmed cell death) genes represent a major causative factor in the development and progression of cancer and enhanced apoptosis may cause degenerative diseases.

Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.

Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.

Chronic inflammation is the result of the immune system's inability to kill off all the microorganisms participated in the acute phase of infection, leading to the forming of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases such as RA and diabetes.

Longer-term oxidative stress in the body can also cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, including lipids, proteins, DNA damage.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancers, scientists examined the Chinese angelica polysaccharide (CAP), the main effective ingredient of angelica sinensis anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the PC12 cells were pretreated by CAP and were subjected to LPS,
* LPS stimulation induced significant cell damage in PC12 cells.

* LPS stimulation also induced cell apoptosis and increased the expression of pro-inflammatory proteins such as IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α.

* CAP pretreatment not only protected PC12 cells against LPS-induced cell damage but also reduced the expression of COX-1 even in LPS-stimulated PC12 cells.

* Interestingly, COX-1 overexpression abolished the protective effects of CAP on LPS-injured PC12 cells.

* Moreover, CAP activated PI3K/AKT pathway associated with the regulation of cell cycle in a COX-1-dependent manner.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "CAP exerted anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects on LPS-injured PC12 cells via down-regulation of COX-1".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy which processes anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
