Herbal Angelica Sinensis Promotes the KidneyFunction Against Diabetic Renal Damage

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

The actual causes of diabetes are debatable. As researchers do not know why some people without genetic mutations are susceptible to disease development, while others do not.
Diabetic nephropathy (Dn) is a chronic kidney disease in diabetics, a leading cause of end-stage renal failure.

Epidemiologically, diabetic nephropathy is also associated with cardiovascular disease and increases the mortality of diabetic patients.

Metabolic and hemodynamic alterations, oxidative stress, and activation of the renin-angiotensin system are some of the risk factors that have been found in patients with Dn.

The most common causes of diabetic renal damage are associated with hyperglycemia, abnormally uncontrolled or fail to manage high blood sugar in the blood.

Long-term unmanaged hyperglycemia can damage the part of the kidneys thus reducing the kidney function in filter waste from the blood filters, leading to 'leaky' syndrome that allows protein into your urine.

Diabetic renal inflammation is a condition associated with inflammation in the development of diabetic nephropathy.

Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the insult from the foreign invasion.

Acute inflammation occurs quickly or within the hours and lasts a few days or weeks and the damaged tissues are healed itself after all pathogens are killed off.

However, if the immune system can not completely destroy all invaders in the acute phase of infection, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of renal diseases, scientists examined the effects and mechanisms of an arabinoglucan (AG) isolated from Angelica sinensis on DN, which was induced in rats by streptozotocin.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the results of intraperitoneally AG for 8 weeks in tested rats,* Diabetic rats exhibited renal dysfunction evidenced by reduced creatinine clearance, increased blood urea nitrogen and proteinuria, along with marked enhanced mesangial expansion. All of these abnormalities were reversed by the AG.

* Furthermore, overproliferation of glomerular mesangial cells (GMCs) was halted by AG treatment, and inflammation mediators were attenuated.

* the AG significantly inhibited the expression of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) associated with oxidative stress, both in diabetic kidneys and in high glucose-induced GMCs.

* Moreover, AG can also directly interact with RAGE and disrupt RAGE binding to advanced glycation end products using microscale thermophoresis.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "AG, acting as a RAGE antagonist, is a promising agent for the prevention and treatment of DN".

Taken altogether, Angelica sinensis may be considered a remedy for the protection of diabetic renal damage, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
