Herbal Elder (Sambucus) Promotes Neuronal Survival and Neuritogenesis in Neurological Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that play an essential role in the process and transmit information.

Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.

Most common disease associated with neurodegenerative diseases is dementia, a cluster of conditions included Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease, leading to a negative influence the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.

There is no single cause of the progressive death of brain neurons. Epidemiologically, genetic preposition, medical conditions, such as alcoholism, brain cancer or a stroke in the brain are some of the most common prevalent factors found in patients with neurological diseases.

Other risk factors associated with the disease prevalence are the increase in age, the most consistent risk factor for developing a neurodegenerative disease, especially AD or PD, as the disease has been found over 60% in the population aged 65 and beyond compared to another group.

Neuritogenesis, the process of new neurites were formed that develop into axons and dendrites, plays a critical role to influence neural functions and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases, scientists examined the effects of peptides mimicking α2,6-sialyllactose (6'-SL) on neural functions.

A prolonged period of toxins, toxic chemicals accumulated that affects the brain function also have a strong impact to induce the onset of the disease.

The progressive loss of neurons induced neurological and neuropsychological signs and symptoms have also been found in comparison to the stage of disease onset of patients.

Elder or Common Elder, is a shrub or small tree of the genus Sambucus of 30 species, belonging to the family Adoxaceae, native to the temperate-to-subtropical regions of both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat constipation, colic, diarrhea, colds, flu, bronchial and upper-respiratory, irritation of the skin, rheumatism, etc.

According to tested analysis,
* The mimetic peptide frequently inhibited the lectin binding to 6'-SL.
* The mimetic peptide, increased viability, and expression of neural cell adhesion molecule L1 in SK-N-SH human neuroblastoma cells.

* Additionally, the mimetic peptide also promoted survival and neurite outgrowth of cultured mouse cerebellar granule neurons challenged by H2O2-induced oxidative stress.

These results strongly suggested that 6'-SL mimetic peptide promotes neuronal survival and neuritogenesis.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "(These results indicated) raising hopes for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. This study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of Shantou University Medical College, China (approval No. SUMC 2014-004) on February 20, 2014".

Taken altogether, Elder lectin, which specifically binds to 6'-SL may be considered a remedy for the treatment of neurological diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.Natural Medicine for Fatty Liver And Obesity Reversal - The Revolutionary Findings To Achieve Optimal Health And Lose Weight
