Herbal Angelica May Be Prescribed for The Treatment of Ovulatory Infertility

Infertility is a reproductive disease characterized by the failure to produce a pregnancy after 12 regular unprotected sexual intercourse, including pregnancy that can not be carried to term.

Infertility is very common in the US, approximately 10% of women or 6.1 million, ages 15-44 have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Believe it or not, only a very small number of such groups are seeking help from the professionals.

In men, age, pesticide and chemical exposure, drug use, radiation, pollution, cigarette or marijuana smoke, heavy alcohol consumption may be some risk factors for the onset of infertility.

In women, certain risk factors including age, excessive, or very low, body fat, medical conditions such as diabetes, hormone imbalance, previous miscarriage and unhealthy lifestyle, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption may affect the ovulation of a woman.

The leading cause of female infertility, that affects nearly 25 percent of infertile couples, is a problem with ovulation, also known as an ovulatory disorder.

The ovaries are oval-shaped ovum-producing reproductive organ formed part of women reproductive system that connects to the fallopian tubes and attaches to the outer layer of the uterus via the ovarian ligament. Usually, the left and right ovary take a turn to release an egg every month.

Painful ovulation is a condition caused by a small leakage of blood from the ovary occurring at the time of ovulation, leading to irritation of the abdominal wall that results in cramps and pain in either left or right side of the abdomen depending on which side of ovaries is responsible for the development of follicles.

Ovulatory infertility is a condition of infertility associated with ovulatory problems including irregular or infrequent ovulation or no ovulation at all.

According to statistics, 25% of female infertility is involved in ovulatory infertility.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infertility in females scientists analyzed Professor Ma Kun's collected medication in treating anovulatory infertility, her prescriptions for treating anovulatory infertility in 2012-2015.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the differentiation of a total of 684 prescriptions and 300 kinds of herbs were screened out, with a total frequency of 11 156 times,
* The top three frequently used herbs by effect were respectively tonic herb, blood circulation promoting herb, and Qi-circulation promoting herb.

* The top three tastes were sweetness, bitterness and pungent flavor. The results showed 28 herbs with a high frequency of ≥100.

Compared to the top 10 frequent use herbal medicine for the treatment of ovulatory infertility, Angelica Sinensis Radix is the most frequently used herb compared to Cyperi Rhizoma, Chuanxiong Rhizome, Paeoniae Radix Rubra, Cyathulae Radix, Taxilli Herba, Cuscutae Semen, Codonopsis Radix, Ligustri Lucidi Fructus, Paeoniae Alba, and Paeoniae Radix Alba. 

In other words, herbal angelica process the properties that were used by professor Ma for the treatment of anovulatory infertility, because of the herbal effects in nourishing the kidney and activating blood throughout the treatment course and attached the importance to the relationship between Qi and blood and the regulation of liver, spleen, and kidney.

Taken altogether, herbal angelica used alone or in a combination with other herbal remedies may be used for the treatment of ovulatory infertility, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
