Herbal Turmeric Protects the Arteries Against Acute Coronary Syndrome Developing

By Kyle J. Norton

Acute coronary syndrome is a medical emergency caused by suddenly reduced blood flow to the heart, leading to heart muscle damage and brain apoptosis depending on the affected location.

The acute coronary syndrome is associated with the severity of buildup of plaque deposits in and on the walls of the coronary arteries.

Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.

Arteries formed a part of blood vessels and circulatory system with function to deliver oxygen and nutrients to heart muscles.

Depending on the severity of the blockage, a complete blockage is life-threatening. Symptoms of the acute coronary syndrome, chest pain or discomfort,  pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the jaw, neck, back or stomach, shortness of breath, dizziness, and nausea.

If the chest pain is persistent with no sign of stopping, please call 911 immediately.

Most common treatment of acute coronary syndrome is medicine to reopen the artery. However, in severe case, angioplasty (a inflate a small balloon) may be necessary.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of acute coronary syndrome, researchers examined whether, Curcuma Longa Radix (Huangsiyujin in Chinese, HSYJ) in the promotion of blood circulation and relieving pain.

According to the tested assays, five fractions (volatile oil fraction, petroleum ether fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, 1-butanol fraction and water fraction) showed efficacy in increased pain threshold, prolonged latency of twisting, decreased the writhing times and influenced hemorheology.

More precisely, the volatile oil fraction and ethyl acetate fraction showed much better efficacy compared to other fractions.

In other words, all constituents in curcumin worked synergistically for the promotion of blood circulation and relief of pain.

In order to know more information about the turmeric anti- acute coronary syndrome activity, researchers investigated whether curcumin processed the inhibition of platelet activation against coagulant and thrombotic effects.

Compared with the thrombin group, the curdione treatment was significantly down-regulated only 2 proteins (Talin1 and β1-tubulin) associated with the induction of platelet activation.

Additional examination suggested that curdione inhibits the expression of vinculin involved in focal adhesion plaques and Talin1 by β1-tubulin involved in platelet activation that affect the integrin signaling pathway in stimulating the coagulant and thrombotic effects.

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of acute coronary syndrome, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
