3,3'-Diindolylmethane, the Best for the treatment of Colitis with No Side Effects

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of colitis with no side effects, according to studies.

Colitis is a condition associated with the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon caused by infection, inflammatory bowel disease, ischemic colitis, and microscopic colitis.

Some cases of colitis are also induced by the overactive immune system in the response of unharmful allergens.

Most common symptoms of colitis depending on the cause of the disease, including abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, with or without blood in the stool.

Some patients in the early phase of colitis may also experience symptoms of fever, chills, fatigue, and skin inflammation.

Dr. Max Gulhane, the lead scientist wrote, "Prolonged high-fat diets (HFD) induce low-grade chronic intestinal inflammation in mice, and diets high in saturated fat are a risk factor for the development of human inflammatory bowel diseases".

And, "In Winnie mice, that develop spontaneous colitis, HFD-feeding increased ER stress, further compromised the mucosal barrier and increased the severity of colitis".

In other words, if you are high-fat diet follower, your risk of colitis is substantially higher compared to other types of diet.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM is phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belongings to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

On the finding potential ingredient for the treatment of chronic colitis, researchers examined the effect of 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) in the activation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (Ahr) in the azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis-associated colon cancer (CAC) in mice.

Where aryl hydrocarbon receptor (Ahr) is a protein associated with gene regulation against the xenobiotic chemicals.

Before injection of DIM, CAC mice exhibited the expression of miR-132 in the colon, associated with the attenuation of tumorigenesis involved chronic colitis at all stages of disease development.

The modulation of miR-132 by DIM was found to inhibit chronic colitis by suppressing the macrophage infiltration and pro-inflammatory cytokines which promote the severity of the disease, through its anti-inflammatory activities.

Further analysis of the anti-inflammatory properties researchers found that MIC inhibits the miR-132 activity against the stages of chronic colitis without suppressing the production of inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 during the course of the disease.

In other words, there must be other mechanisms associated with the MIC anti chronic colitis efficacy other than those of the traditional differentiation.

Dr. Alzahrani AM, the lead scientist said, "miR-132 as a promising therapeutic candidate to control autoimmune inflammation and tumorigenesis in CAC patients".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of chronic colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
