In Herbal Medicine, symptoms of the diseases can only be eased gradually, depending to stage of the treatment which directly address to the cause.

Andrographis paniculata may protect our body against cigarette smoke-induced inflammation cause of lung disease, a renowned study postulated.

Andrographis paniculata, also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, ......

Cigarette contains harmful chemicals including acetone, acetic acid, ammonia, arsenic, benzene butane, etc......which have been proven to induced varies respiratory diseases, including lung disease.

According to the The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, in CS-exposed mice, andrographolide, a chemical constituent found in Andrographis, significantly attenuated lung inflammation through reduced numbers of total cells of neutrophils, a common type of white blood cells, and macrophages, a cell found in stationary form in the tissues of infection in bronchial alveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of intestinal lung disease, together with decreased production of cytokine/chemokine(small cytokine), pro-inflammatory meediators into BALF.

Dr. Yang D., the lead author in the study said, " Andrographolide, a bioactive molecule isolated from Andrographispaniculata, could protect against cigarette smoke (CS)-induced lung injury through activation of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), (an enzyme with function in response stress)".
The study also insisted that the effects of andrographis in ameliorated cigarette smoke-induced lung disease, probably involved the activation of protein in mediated cellular responses STAT3, together with enzyme HO-1.

In female BALB/c mice exposed to 2 weeks of cigarette smoke(CS0 followed by a single intratracheal instillation of NTHi, a respiratory tract pathogen common in local infection study, andrographolide promoted gene expression of antioxidant enzymes such as heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase-2 (GPx-2), glutamate-cysteine ligase modifier (GCLM), and NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), against lung inflammation caused by NTHi in cigarette smoke.

Furthermore, in cigarette smoke-induced oxidative lung injury, andrographolide activated nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), a protein in regulated expression of antioxidant proteins against oxidative damage.

The study also suggested, the phytochemical also suppressed cigarette smoke-induced increases in lavage fluid cell counts, pro inflammatory cutokines and oxidative stress, through enhancing production of antioxidant properties against biomarkers in inducing lung diseases.

The information collected through studies strongly support a therapeutic potential for andrographolide in preventing lung diseases caused by harmful chemicals and pathogens in cigarette smoke.
