Turmeric, the Best for the Prevention and Treatment of Eye Disease

The eyes are organs of sight that help us to see. The eyes also adjust to low light and darkness for good vision.

The eyes process the ability to receive and process s visual detail by detecting light and converting them into electro-chemical impulses in neurons.

Eye disease is a general term of conditions associated with the damage of the optic nerve and impaired vision, including disease of the cornea and macular degeneration.

People with eye disease in the early stage may not have any symptoms. However, depending on the severity and location that affects the vision, However, at the advanced stage,  people with eye disease may experience symptoms of acute eye pain, hazy, blurred, or double vision, seeing flashes of light or sudden bright floating spots.

Most common eye problems are minor and will go away on their own such as red-eye and eye strain. However, some eye problems may require medical attention such as vision change.

According to the statistics, the financial burden of vision loss and eye diseases and vision disorders in the U.S. has taken a toll on health care costs. Approximately, over $130 billion a year are spent to treat eye disease.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the improvement of vision health, researchers examined the properties of curcumin and its potential therapeutic efficacy in major anterior segment eye diseases.

In the study, curcumin structural was modified to prevent low solubility and digestive bioavailability.

The modified application showed a significant effect to protect the eye through its anti-angiogenesis effect in corneal diseases; anti-inflammation or anti-allergy effects in dry eye disease, conjunctivitis, anterior uveitis.

Furthermore, curcumin in the new modification also demonstrated anti-proliferation and pro-apoptosis effects in pterygium; anti-oxidative stress, anti-osmotic stress, anti-lipid peroxidation, pro-apoptosis, regulating calcium homeostasis.

Additionally, sequestrating free radicals, protein modification and degradation effects in cataracts; neuroprotective effects in glaucoma were also inhibited by the new modification.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Curcumin exhibited to be a potent therapeutic candidate for treating those anterior segment eye diseases".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention of eye diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
