Herbal Angelica Promotes Colon Functioning in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The colon also known as the large bowel or large intestine, is part of the digestive system in our body which plays a critical role to reabsorb fluids and process waste products from the body and prepare for its elimination.

The mucosa is the inner lining of the colon and rectum made up of a thin layer of epithelial cells (called the epithelium) a layer of connective tissue (called the lamina propria) with a function to promote the moving of stool easily through the colon and rectum.

Most common diseases associated with the colon are
* Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon or rectum due to the alternation of cells DNA.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women compared to other types of cancer.
* Colonic polyps are a small clump of cells that forms on the lining of the colon. Most colon polyps are harmless
* Ulcerative colitis or ulcers of the colon and rectum is a  condition of inflammation of the small, bulging sacs or pouches of the inner lining of the intestine that bulge outward through weak spots as a result of small pieces of stool (feces) trapped in these pouches.

According to the statistic, approximately, About 10 percent of Americans older than 40 have diverticulosis.

*Diverticulitis - inflammation or infection of pouches in the colon.

* Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition in which a patient is diagnosed with abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits at least three times a month for the last 3 months without the preexistence of another disease.

Secreted of colonic mucus by the colon not only protected mucosal surfaces in the gut, airways, and urinogenital tract but also softened stool and promoted to discharge.porlongs stool.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of colonic diseases, researchers examined the effects of Angelicaesinensis radix (Danggui) decoction on the therapeutic action and the colonic morphology and mucus secretion in XuexuBianmi model mice.

A total of 60 Kunming mice, containing 1/2 males and females were randomly divided into six groups according to gender and weight (n=10): normal control group, XuexuBianmi model group, positive control group, and high-dose, middle-dose and low-dose Danggui groups.

Except for the normal control group, all other groups were orally administrated with diphenoxylate (DPN) and subcutaneously injected with acetyl phenylhydrazine (APH) and intraperitoneally injected with cyclophosphamide (CPA) to copy XuexuBianmi model.

From the 14th day, the mice in Danggui groups were orally administered with different doses of Danggui decoction (16.67、8.33、4.17 g/kg), and the mice in the positive control group were orally administered with Changtongshu granule (5 g/kg),

Furthermore, the mice in the XuexuBianmi model group were administered with normal saline (NS) at the same volume (10 ml/kg), once a day for consecutive 28 days.

Based on the experimental analysis,
* Compared with the normal control group, the XuexuBianmi syndromes in the model group showed a significantly prolonged defecation time (FBDT), decrease of the water content in stool and in the colon were decreased (P<0.01), atrophy of the colonic mucosa and gland and decrease and thinning of the mucous membrane layer.

* Compared with the XuexuBianmimodel group, the Xuexu and Bianmi syndromes were improved.

* Danggui decoction treatment groups demonstrated the significant shorten of the first black defecation time (FBDT), increase of the water content of colon, improvement of the atrophy of colon mucosa and gland and colon lubrication function and mucus secretion in the colon.

Collectively, researchers said, "Dangguican improve the mucosal atrophy, and increase the secretion of colonic mucus, then the stool is softened and promoted to discharge".

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica may be considered a remedy for the protection of the colonic functioning pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.
