Herbal Cleaver(Galium aparine), the Best Remedy for the Treatment of Hypertension

By Kyle J. Norton

Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the arterial walls. In high blood pressure, the heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood through the circulation system. Over time, high blood pressure has been found to cause damage to the heart and arteries.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition characterized by persistent high blood pressure.

In the US approximately, one-third of the adults have high blood pressure, affecting over 77 million people in the country.

Additionally, among adults age 20 and older in the United States, in the non-Hispanic whites community, 33.4 percent of men and 30.7 percent of women are infected by the syndrome.

High blood pressure is a slowly developed condition. Unless the syndrome has caused damage to the blood vessel, otherwise symptoms cannot be detected.

The cause of high blood pressure is a result of hardening and thickening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), due to the slow progression of plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries.

High blood pressure can be acute or chronic. Acute high blood pressure most often occurs to people with sudden stress.

Acute high blood pressure can be caused by intense physical exercise. As the heart must pump harder to provide the needs of nutrients and oxygen.

Most cases of chronic high blood pressure are associated with an unhealthy lifestyle and chronic diseases such as kidney disease, leading to the onset of strokes and cardiovascular disease.

Abnormal high blood pressure, depending on how high of the numbers, patients may experience symptoms of a headache to a severe headache., fatigue, vision problems. However, in severe cases, high blood pressure can also induce chest pain, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat and confusion.

Untreated high blood pressure epidemiologically can cause complications of retinopathy, lead to damage to the retina or bleeding in the eye, blurred vision and complete loss of vision.

Cleaver is a herbaceous annual plant, genus Galium, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, native to North America and Eurasia. The herb has been used over thousands of years in herbal and traditional medicine as mild diuretic and blood and lymphatic cleanser and to treat psoriasis, skin conditions, glands, tonsillitis, bladder infections, prevent small kidney stone, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), researchers investigated the antihypertensive and antioxidant potential of vanillic acid (VA) found in cleaver, in N(ω)-Nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (L-NAME) induced hypertension in adult male albino Wistar rats.

Before injecting vanillic acid, L-NAME (40 mg/kg Bw for 30 days) treated rats caused a sustained increase in systolic- (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and significantly decreased the concentration of nitrite/nitrate (NO(x)) in plasma, compared to the control.

However, rats treated with VA restored SBP and DBP to a normal level and preserved the plasma NO metabolites concentration.

Moreover, the VA also improved the antioxidant and non-antioxidant enzymes and lipid reduced lipid peroxidation expression in the plasma of the tested rats.

VA thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, lipid hydroperoxides, conjugated dienes) and significantly restored enzymatic antioxidants (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase), non-enzymatic antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, and reduced glutathione) in the plasma.

More precisely, the effect at a dose of 50 mg/kg Bw of VA was more pronounced than that of 25 and 100 mg/kg Bw.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " VA possesses an antihypertensive and antioxidant activity in L-NAME-induced hypertensive rats".
Taken altogether, Comfrey may be considered a remedy for the treatment of hypertension, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
