Topical Leek Extract, A Potent Cream for the Treatment of Symptomatic Hemorrhoids

By Kyle J. Norton

Hemorrhoids, also called piles are a common condition characterized by swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum.

Symptomatic hemorrhoidal tissues located above the dentate line associated with the development of internal hemorrhoids that induce bleeding and prolapse.

The causes of hemorrhoids are unknown.

However, some researchers suggested that straining during bowel movements, a prolonged period of sitting due to the occupation that induces increased pressure on these veins are associated with the early onset of the condition.

In women, a pregnancy that causes pressure on the anus and swollen veins and lower rectum veins may also increase the risk of hemorrhoids.

According to statistics, a quarter of adults population in the US have hemorrhoids developed at some points in their lives.

Most patients with hemorrhoids do not experience any symptoms. But in some infectious cases, hemorrhoids may induce symptoms of itching, discomfort, and bleeding.

Please be aware that some internal hemorrhoids can grow so large that they stick out of the anus. Prolapsed hemorrhoids, most of the time may require surgery to heal.

Dr. Seok-Gyu Song, the lead scientists wrote, "The traditional therapeutic strategies of medicine include surgical, as well as non-surgical, treatment. To alleviate symptoms caused by hemorrhoids, oral treatments, such as fiber, suppositories and Sitz baths have been applied to patients".

And, "Other non-surgical treatments, such as infrared photocoagulation, injection sclerotherapy, and rubber band ligation have been used to fixate hemorrhoid's cushion. If non-surgical treatment has no effect, surgical treatments, such as a hemorrhoidectomy, procedure for prolapsed hemorrhoids, and transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization are used".

Leek is a genius of Allium, belongings to the vegetable family vegetable Alliacaea, the same as onion and garlic. Leeks are easy to grow from seed and usually reach maturity in the autumn months, and have few pest or disease problems.

On finding a potential plant for the treatment of swollen veins. researchers compared the effects of topical herbal formulations and Allium ampeloprasum subsp iranicum (Leek)  anti hemorrhoidal activity.

According to the results of 20 patients with symptomatic hemorrhoids that were randomly allocated to receive the topical leek extract cream or standard anti hemorrhoid cream for 3 weeks,
* There was a significant decrease in the grade of bleeding severity and defecation discomfort in both the leek and anti hemorrhoid cream groups after the intervention.

* There was no significant change in pain scores.

* There was no significant difference between the leek and anti hemorrhoid cream groups with regard to mean changes in outcome measures.

Collectively, researchers said, "This pilot study showed that the topical use of leek cream can be as effective as a standard anti hemorrhoid cream".

Taken altogether, leeks may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of symptomatic hemorrhoids, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
