Herbal Ashwagandha, a Natural Prevention and Treatment of Insomnia

By Kyle J. Norton

Most of us experience sleep disturbance sometimes. However, chronic sleep disorders are the changes in the way that you sleep.

Sleep disorders can be acute or chronic. Acute sleep disorder caused by specific or nonspecific events can resolve quickly in short times after the event is addressed.

Ignoring sleep disorders have been found to induce poor health, poor mood, and lethargy, and sometimes have a negative impact on motivation, relationships, and job performance in daily life.

Some people who use over the counter medicine or herbal medicine without consulting the experts may experience side effects and in some cases, worsening sleep problems.

Most people with chronic sleep disorder experience symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness, irregular breathing or increased movement during sleep, and difficulty falling asleep.

Sleep quality can be measured by examing the.way that you sleep, including the time period that you need to fall to sleep and how many times you have awakened and drifted back to sleep during night sleep.

The National Sleep Foundation’s inaugural Sleep Health Index showed, 45 % of Americans have poor or insufficient sleep that affects their daily activities at least once in the past seven days.

Depending on the types of sleep disorder, the most common causes of chronic sleep disorder are caffeine consumption, lack of regular exercise, poor stress management and the increase in aging.

Insomnia, a common sleep disorder associated with trouble sleeping, including difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. The condition has been found to induce symptoms of daytime sleepiness, low energy, and irritability.

Long term insomnia is associated with a neurological disorder of depressed mood.

According to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, in 2018, 25% of the US population experience acute insomnia each year. and 6% of the population are living with chronic insomnia.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of sleep disorder, researchers examined the effects of the root or whole plant extract of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) on insomnia patients.

In vivo, the root or whole plant extract of Ashwagandha showed significant activity on mice sleep regulation.

Furthermore, the water extract containing the chemical constituents triethylene glycol as a major component induced a significant amount of non-rapid eye movement sleep with a slight change in rapid eye movement sleep in a dose-dependent (10-30 mg/mouse) manner.

However, the alcoholic extract that contained a high amount of active withanolides showed the insignificant effect to induce sleep in mice.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " These results clearly demonstrated that triethylene glycol is an active sleep-inducing component of Ashwagandha leaves and could potentially be useful for insomnia therapy".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha containing  triethylene glycol  may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of insomnia, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study
