Chinese Herbs – Sou Yang (Herba Cynomorii songarica)

Sou Yang is also known Songaria Cynomorium Herb. The sweet and warm herb has been used in TCM to treat impotence, constipation due to anemia, lack of strength in loin, etc., as it tonifies the Kidneys,  benefits the Yang, moistens the Intestines, promotes bowel movement, etc. by enhancing the functions of liver and kidney channels.

Health benefits
1. Antibacterial Effect
The crude acetone-water (7:3) extract from Cynomorium songaricum Rupr. had moderate activity against MRSA. Cynomoriitannin was the most effective of the plant constituents against MRSA, according to  Inner Mongolia University , Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China(1).
2. Free radical scavenging activity
A novel DPPH-HPLC method was successfully developed for evaluating the free radical scavenging activity of Cynomorium songaricum Rupr. The analysis was achieved on a YMC C(30) column with the gradient elution by using water and methanol as mobile phase. The intraday and interday precisions were less than 4.36%., according to the School of Public Health, Lanzhou Univ.(2).
3. Immunity
In the study to investigate the immunomodulatory effect of Part III of Cynomorium songaricum Rupr. on the immunosuppressive mice, showed that Part III from Cynomorium songaricum Rupr. has protective effect on the immunosuppressive mice, which may be related to the increasing of humoral immunity and nonspecific immunity(3).
4. HIV-1
In the evaluation of  the CH2Cl2 and MeOH extracts of the stems of Cynomorium songaricum RUPR. (Cynomoriaceae), ursolic acid and its hydrogen malonate were isolated as inhibitors of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) protease, indicated that the water extract of the stems of C. songaricum, flavan-3-ol polymers, consisting of epicatechin as their extender flavan units, were also found to be potent inhibitory principles against HIV-1 protease(4).

Side Effects
1. Do not use in case of kidney Yin deficiency with heat
2. Do not use in case of diarrhea as a result spleen qi deficiency or constipation due to excess heat
3. Do not use the herb in newborn, children or if you are pregnant or breast feeding without first consulting with the related field specialist.
