Turmeric, the Natural Treatment for Metabolic Dysfunction with No Side Effects, Revealed by Scientists

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a kitchen spice which processes bioactive ingredients for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction with no side effects, according to studies.

Metabolism is a natural chemical process of organisms, including humans with an aim to sustain- life.

According to the purposes of the bioprocess, human metabolism can be classified into the process to convert food to energy by breaking down the carbohydrates, proteins, and fats to run cellular processes, and eliminate nitrogenous wastes.

Metabolic dysfunction is a condition caused by any interruption of the aforementioned processes.
In other words,  metabolic dysfunction induces the production of excess or reduced amount of substances needed to stay healthy.

A metabolic disorder can be caused by genetic proposition induced inborn errors of metabolism, or acquired by an individual in the lifetime

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of metabolic dysfunction depending on the types of disruption such as abnormal blood glucose metabolism induced type 2 diabetes.

Diseases associated with metabolic dysfunction can be moderate or severe depending on the organs involved, including liver or respiratory failure, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis), and HIV/AIDS.

Symptoms of metabolic dysfunction are varied among individuals depending totally to the types of disorder.

Some mild condition of metabolic dysfunction can be managed with only lifestyle change, others may require the long-term intake of certain medication accompanied by a healthy diet and moderate exercise such as diabetes.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction, researchers examined the potential capacity of curcumin, contained in Curcuma longa extract (Biocurcuma™),in the attenuation of risperidone-induced metabolic dysfunction in an animal model.

The study involved 4 groups of mice were treated once a week, for 22 weeks with an intraperitoneal injection of risperidone (Risperdal) at a dose of 12.5 mpk.

One group of mice in the risperidone-treated group were fed a diet with 0.05% Biocurcuma™ (curcumin), one of the vehicle-treated group and two other groups received the standard diet.

Curcumin treatment group inhibited the risperidone effect in reducing spontaneous motricity (motor function) but failed to impede de risperidone-induced increase in food intake.

In other words, curcumin failed to reduced de risperidone-induced weight gain and steatosis.but decreased visceral adiposity stored within the abdominal cavity and decreased the risperidone-induced abnormal enlargement of the liver.

Furthermore, curcumin protected the liver enzymes associated with lipid and glucose metabolism against the overexpression in the induction of metabolic dysfunction by modulating the risperidone-induced glucose intolerance and hypertriglyceridemia.

Moreover, curcumin treatment group also showed to reduce levels of markers of hepatotoxicity (ALAT, ASAT) and proinflammatory cytokines expression caused by risperidone (Risperdal).

Dr. Auger F, the lead scientist said, "These findings support that nutritional doses of curcumin contained in Curcuma longa extract are able to partially counteract the risperidone-induced metabolic dysfunction in mice".

The findings suggested that Curcuma longa extract inhibited metabolic dysfunction through a number of mechanisms involving adipocytes, pancreatic cells, hepatic stellate cells, macrophages, and muscle cells.

Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compound curcumin may be considered functional remedies for the treatment of syndrome and diseases associated with metabolic dysfunction, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Sinigrin Protects Our Body Against Chronic Inflammatory Diseases, According to PubMed

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, according to studies.

Inflammation is a natural process of the immune system which tries to protect our body against the invasion of stimuli and pathogens.

This process has been found to involve several stages after the bodily injury caused by physical impact or internal damage.

In the acute phase of infection, the white blood cells of the first line of immune defense stimulate to the production of blood coagulation to cover the wound and activate the protein associated with the production of inflammatory cytokines to kill off the invaders before they can enter the body.

However, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines can lead to damage and death of the healthy cells, causing the irreversible scars as in liver hepatitis infection.

Chronic inflammation (CI) is a result in which the immune system can not destroy the invasive pathogens in the acute phase of infection within 3- 8 weeks, leading to the immune adaptation of the new change in facilitating low-grade inflammatory diseases, including arthritis and diabetes.

Out of a number of factors involved the onset of chronic inflammatory, some researchers suggested that the immune system dysfunction is one of the most prevalent risk factors in CI.

Dr. MARK HYMAN, MD in the article of inflammation & immune balance wrote, "If your immune system and your ability to balance the inflammatory forces in your body are impaired, watch out. You are headed toward illness and premature aging".

Sinigrin is a phytochemical glucosinolate, belongs to the family of glucosides found abundantly in Brussels sprouts, broccoli, the seeds of black mustard, etc.

Scientists on searching the natural alternative compound with anti-inflammatory activity examined the sinigrin effects on adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes.

Injection of sinigrin remarkably inhibited the accumulation of lipid droplets and the process of cell differentiation associated with inflammation by inhibiting the expression of a protein involved key activators of adipogenesis, the CCAAT-enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBPα).

Furthermore, sinigrin also decreased the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), which plays in regulating adipogenesis, lipid metabolism, cell proliferation, inflammation, hormone leptin in the promotion of inflammation and the expansion of effector T cells (Teff) and the fatty acid-binding protein, aP2 coordinated with inflammatory activity.

Moreover, sinigrin arrested cells in the G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle against inflammation in the induction of cellular damage.

Additionally, sinigrin also increased the phosphorylation of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), in reducing the immune inflammatory responses. mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) in regulating the fatty acid synthesis and degradation, in the early stage of adipocyte differentiation in adipocytes inflammation.

The anti proinflammation of sinigrin inhibition also are observed by limiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor -alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β and IL-18.

Dr. Lee HW and colleagues wrote in the final report, "sinigrin inhibits early-stage adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 adipocytes through the AMPK and MAPK signaling pathways".

The findings strongly suggested that sinigrin exerted a significant anti-inflammatory activity via several proteins and pathways.

Taken altogether, sinigrin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation.

However, intake of supplement should be taken with exceptional care to prevent liver toxicity.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane, The Potential Melanoma Inhibitor, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

3,3'-Diindolylmethane may be the next bioactive compound for the treatment of melanoma with no side effects, according to studies.

Melanoma is skin cancer caused by the alternation of melanocytes DNA in the skin pigment, leading to the formation of moles that change in the color, size or shape on the skin.

Most cases of melanoma start in the in the melanocytes or pigment-producing cells in the outer layer of the skin. However, at the later stage, the cancer cells can travel through the circulation of blood and fluids to infect other healthy cells and tissue, leading to secondary metastasis.

The liver, lungs, bones, and brain are most often affected by melanoma metastases.

According to statistic, the risk of melanoma is largely depended on the race. the lifetime risk of getting melanoma is about 2.5% (1 in 40) for whites, 0.1% (1 in 1,000) for blacks, and 0.5% (1 in 200) for Hispanics.

The 5 years survival rate of melanoma is closed to 100% if the disease is diagnosed in the localized stages.

In the US, every year, approximately 96,480 new melanomas are diagnosed, leading to the death of 7,000 people.

In North America, most cases of melanoma are associated with UVB exposure, causing the alteration of the cell DNA.

Dr. S A Oliveria, the lead scientist said, "Sun-sensitive phenotypes and reported sunburn were associated with an increased risk of melanoma" and "intense sun exposure is causal for melanoma in those prone to sunburn".

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of melanoma compared the effects of
kaempferol (Kem), genistein (Gen), and 3'3-diindolylmethane (DIM) on melanoma cell viability.

Treatment of A375SM melanoma cells with the tested phytochemicals resulted in inhibition of cell growth.

DIM exerted the strong inhibition against the A375SM melanoma cells by increasing the tumor suppressive gene expression, p21 and decreasing the gene expression associated with the cancer cell proliferation and survival.

Injection of DIM and other tested phytochemical also induced the expression of pro-apoptotic pathways against the tested cancer cell line and deactivated the anti-apoptotic pathways.

Furthermore, DIM and tested phytochemical also enhanced the activity of ROS in the induction of cytotoxicity without causing harm to the healthy cells.

Dr. Heo JR and colleagues said, "These results indicate that phytochemicals (kaempferol (Kem), genistein (Gen), and 3'3-diindolylmethane (DIM)) are potentially useful in treatments for melanoma due to their ability to inhibit melanoma cell growth and division".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of melanoma, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Injection of DIM in a form of supplement should be taken with exceptional care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Honey Normalizes the Levels of Blood Cholesterol with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of hyperlipidemia according to study.

Hyperlipidemia is a condition of high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream. Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is needed for the body to build cell wall, aid digestion and make steroid hormones and vitamin D.

Cholesterol can be produced by the liver or eating some fatty foods. There are 2 types of cholesterol, the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) which carries the aforementioned functions and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) which returns the cholesterol to the liver for reuse.

The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 (LDL)/1 (HDL). If you have a number that lowers than 4, you have healthy blood cholesterol.

Hyperlipidemia is one member of the cluster conditions of metabolic syndrome, therefore, if you have a number that is higher than 4, your risk of cardiovascular is increased compared to people with healthy levels.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of hyperlipidemia, some researchers suggested that the association of the widespread obesity and hyperlipidemia in the US adults are worrisome in the scientist's community.

Dr. Boudewijn Klop and the colleagues at the Diabetes and Vascular Centre, Sint Franciscus Gasthuis wrote, "Obesity increases cardiovascular risk through risk factors such as increased fasting plasma triglycerides, high LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, elevated blood glucose, and insulin levels and high blood pressure. Novel lipid-dependent, metabolic risk factors associated with obesity are the presence of the small dense LDL phenotype, postprandial hyperlipidemia with an accumulation of atherogenic remnants and hepatic overproduction of apoB containing lipoproteins".

And, "All these lipid abnormalities are typical features of the metabolic syndrome and may be associated with a pro-inflammatory gradient which in part may originate in the adipose tissue itself and directly affect the endothelium".

The results strongly suggested the association of obesity and the onset of abnormal blood cholesterol in the contribution of many complications and diseases.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Scientists on finding a natural compound for the treatment of cholesterol examined honey effects on patients with high cholesterol concentrations.

The study included 60 volunteers with high cholesterol, stratified according to gender and hydroxymethyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase inhibitor (statin) treatment (yes/no), randomized to receive 75 g of the honey solution or a honey-comparable sugar solution once daily over a period of 14 days.

Measurements repeated 2 weeks later, showed that BMI and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol values were significantly correlated (r = -0.487; P < .001) as were BMI and a lower ratio of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol to HDL cholesterol (r = 0.420; P < .001).

In other words, injection of honey, subjects with a high BMI had a lower HDL cholesterol value.

Even though neither solution influenced significantly cholesterol or triglyceride values in the total group; but substituting honey for sugar in their diet showed to reduce the BMI and lower the LDL cholesterol value.

The finding suggested honey does not have a direct effect in normalizing the levels of blood cholesterol but indirectly reduce the patients BMI value, which has been found to have strong effects in decreasing the levels of cholesterol.

Furthermore, according to research presented at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, honey fights cholesterol as well as some fruits and vegetables.

The study included 25 men between the ages of 18 - 68 who are given a mixture of water and honey, about four tablespoons per 16-ounce glass in a five-week.

Blood sample withdrawn at the end of the experience showed reduced levels of cholesterol through improving the antioxidant levels in the blood.

Moreover, the application of the mixture also has a significant effect in reducing the risk of atherosclerosis which caused by the plaque such as cholesterol and other substances build up on the arterial wall.

The onset of atherosclerosis is a major cause of heart disease in the US.

The results suggested that replacing the use of sweetening agent, like sugar with honey may improve the antioxidant status in reducing the risk of cholesterol overexpression in the bloodstream.

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Butterbur, Exhibits Cytotoxic Effects Against Cancers Cells

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a medicinal remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our body, due to change of cellular DNA.

Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of tissue of the organ. At the 0 stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, most patient so not experience any symptoms.

However, at the later stage of the tumor progression, if undetected, the large size of the tumor can suppress and break the nearby small blood vessel, leading to internal bleeding and severe if the tumor also suppresses the nearby nerve cells.

Primary cancer cells at this advanced stage can also travel a dsitance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Symptoms of cancer at this stage are totally depended on the affected area, including vomiting blood in oral and lung cancers blood in the urine in bladder cancer. hoarseness in throat cancer. ... Persistent lumps in the breast and lymph cancer and indigestion or difficulty swallowing in digestive related cancers.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of cancers, but they do know, according to epidemiological studies that age, alcohol cancer, chronic Inflammation, genetic proposition, unhealthy diet,  change of hormones use of immunosuppression,  infectious agents, obesity, exposure to radiation and sunlight, use of tobacco are most common risk factors associated with the onset of some specific cancers.

Some researchers in the investigation of weakened immune function in risk of cancer suggested people with weakened immune system lost the function
1) to stimulate the T cells inactivation of the B cells in the production of p53, a tumor suppressor gene, or antioncogene that inhibits the cancer cell proliferation and tumor development and

2) to simulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to kill off the DNA alternated damage cells in the acute phase of inflammation.

In other words, if you have a strong immune system, your risk of cancer is substantially lower compared to the general public.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, riverside, forest, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere. the herbal plant has been used in herbal medicne used as an pain reliever in the digestive system, including stomach, bile ducts, and duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin and iso-S-petasin, etc.

The Shandong University at Weihai, on the finding a natural compound for the treatment of cancer with no side effects examined a new bakkenolide isolated from Butterbur anti-cancer effects.

The new bakkenolide exerted a potent cytotoxic activity against a number of cultured human cancer cells, including human cervical carcinoma (HeLa), human breast cancer (MCF-7) and murine Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cell lines.

According to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service in vitro methanol extract from the leaves in the rat liver epithelial cells. significantly decreased spontaneous beta-galactosidase activity and beta-galactosidase activity induced by a mutagen.

Elevated beta-galactosidase (beta-gal) enzyme activity is an indication of the tumor and metastatic expression.

All doses of the extract (0.08-100 mg/plate) decreased the reversion frequency induced by benzo (alpha)pyrene (BaP) in S. Typhimurium TA 98 of the Salmonella typhimurium.

Additional analysis of the experiment, PJ extract showed greater cytotoxic effects on human stomach, colon, and uterus cancer cells than on other cancer cell types and normal rat liver epithelial cells.

Furthermore, PJ significantly increased the numbers of gap junction proteins associated with tumor suppression in a dose-dependent manner.

Dr. the lead scientist said, "Based on these findings, PJ is suggested to contain antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic compounds".

Taken altogether, herbal Butterbur may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cancers.

Ginger Protects the Neurons integrity Against Age-Related Neurological Disorders, According to Scientists

By Kyle J. Norton

On seeking natural ingredient or whole food with no side effects, scientists may have found a pungent spice for the prevention and treatment of age-related neurological disorders, according to studies.

Age-related neurological disorders or neurodegenerative diseases are the conditions of the progressive death of neuron due to aging, leading to the problems with movement (called ataxias), or mental functioning including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly with mild memory loss first and worsens over time. In severe cases, the elderly with AD may lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment.

Dementia is a general term of neuro-degenerative disease that causes a decline in memory and thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities and quality of life, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Huntington's disease.

For most parts, the causes of these diseases are unknown. researchers cannot explain why elderly with the same health conditions in the same family, some members are susceptible to the onset of dementias while others do not.

Besides aging, geographical, hereditary and viral and toxicological exposure may also correlate to the development of the diseases on the elderly.

Some researchers suggested that unhealthy lifestyle in the Western world in the induction of obesity may be one of the major cause associated with the onset of the condition.

Dr. Mazon JN, the lead scientist, said, "...evidence has shown a strong correlation between obesity and the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Metabolic changes caused by overweight are related to damage to the central nervous system (CNS)".

And, "Metabolic changes caused by overweight are related to damage to the central nervous system (CNS), which can lead to neural death, either by apoptosis or cell necrosis, as well as alter the synaptic plasticity of the neuron".

These results clearly suggested that if you are obese, your risk of neurodegenerative diseases is increased substantially compared to non-obese individuals.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

In the course of continued finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of age-related neurological disorders (ANDs), researchers examined the effects of ginger used in traditional medicine for the treatment of various disease symptoms.

Ginger phytochemicals exhibited anti-ANDs by targeting different ligand sites.

Furthermore, ginger and its constituents, such as 6-gingerol, 6-shogaol, 6-paradol, zingerone, and dehydrozingerone were effective for ameliorating the neurological symptoms.

Moreover, application of ginger also inhibited the pathological conditions of ANDs by modulating cell death or cell survival signaling proteins.

The results suggested that ginger and its bioactive compounds may have therapeutic potential in ANDs.

Additionally, with an aim to reveal more information about ginger anti ANDs activity, researchers investigated the neurotrophic effects in primary cultured rat cortical neurons and PC12 cells.

In vivo. ginger diet for 1 month in SAMP8 mice induced age-related learning and memory impairments, showed to reverse of spatial learning and memory deficits by significantly increased the numbers of Ki67-positive cells in the dentate gyrus.

Where Ki-67 protein is associated with cell proliferation or reduplication.

In PC12 cells, the ginger application also exhibited a neurotrophin-like activity as indicated by the induction of neurite sprouting.

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a neuroprotective remedy against age-related neurological disorders, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
