Cold uterus is defined as a condition of not enough yang and blood to
warm the uterus that interferes not only the function of uterine lining
in fertilized egg implantation, but also cause miscarriage if the egg
already implants in endometrial lining in the uterus.
I. Symptoms
1. Cold hands and feet
2. Lower back pain,
3. Low libido,
4. Frequent urination
5. Loose stool
6. Etc.
II. Causes
1. Blood Deficiency
Blood
defieciency can be caused by heredity such anemia, internal bleeding,
liver abnormal function in blood formation and storing, or stomach
abnormal function in food qi and essence absorption, leading to not
enough blood to warm the uterus during the luteal phase of the
menstrual cycle.
2. Blood stagnation
Blood stagnation can be caused by qi deficiency or sluggish function of lung in distributing qi to the liver.
3. Stress
Stress
not only reduces the function of liver and heart in moving blood
through the blood vessels and warm the uterus, but also causes tension
in the fallopian tubes that affects the transportation of the fertilized
egg for implantation.
4. Liver qi deficiency
If qi is
deficiency, it can not moves the blood through the blood vessels,
leading to blood stagnation, resulting in increasing the risk of not
enough blood to nourish the uterus for conception.
5. Kidney yang deficiency
Kidney yang is important in warming the blood yin as it is transported to the abdomen, deficiency of yang can cause cold uterus.

III. Treatments
A. With herbs
1. Herbs for kidney yang deficiency
a) Ba ji tian (Morinda root)
Ba
ji tian is also known as Chinese morinda root, sweet and warm in
nature. It is also one the herbs used to strengthen the liver and kidney
qi and blood yang by enhancing the liver in blood formation and kidney
in urinary secretion, thus reducing the yang deficiency causes of
abdominal distention, including cramps and pain during menstrual cycle.
b) Rou chong rong (Fleshy stem of broomrape)
Rou
Chong Rong used in traditional Chinese medicine for reducing the
blockage of kidney-large intestine meridian, thereby increasing the
kidney function in increasing blood circulation to warm the uterus,
assisting urinary secretion and digestive system in moving waste,
resulting in lessening the fluid retention and dysmenorrhea.
c) Bu gu zhi (Psoralea fruit)
Bu
gu zhi is also known as psoralea fruit and used in traditional Chinese
medicine in treating blockage of meridian kidney-Spleen. It tonifies the
yang qi by increasing the kidney function in assisting the function of
lung qi and the function of spleen in qi distribution.

2. Herbs for qi deficiency
a) Ren shen (Ginseng)
Ren
shen is considered as one of most powerful herbs in strengthening the
original qi in the body. i) In spleen, it improves the spleen function
in qi absorption, thus reducing the symptoms of distended chest and abdomen cramps and pain.
ii)
In lung, it enhances the lung qi by moistening the channels, thus
reducing the symptoms of asthma, dry cough and preventing the rebellion
qi causes of menstrual cramps and pain.
b) Xi yang shen (American ginseng)
Xi
yang shen is yin in nature, besides promoting the lung and spleen qi,
it also increases the digestive system in absorbing vital energy and
reducing the heat causes of qi stagnation by moistening the all qi
transportation channels, especially for qi stagnation caused by
deficiency of yin.
c) Dang shen (pilose asiabell root)
Dang
shen is a spleen and lung tonic herbs. It improves the lung function in
moving qi smoothly through its channels and spleen function in absorbing
qi after foods entering the stomach. It also helps to restore the qi
which is damaged by heat caused by infection, inflammation or heat
generated due to excessive fluids accumulation.

3. Herbs for blood stasis
a) Bai shao (White peony root)
White
peony root nourishes the blood and tones the uterus, it reduces the
symptoms of yin deficiency causes of abdomen cramps and pain.
b) E Jiao (Ass-hide glue)
Ass-hide glue
is a blood tonic herb that promotes the liver function in blood
formation and lung dryness caused by yin deficiency. It is said that ass-hide glue also alleviates abnormal cramps and pain and stops abnormal bleeding during menstruation.
c) Gou qi zi (Wolfberry fruit)
Although wolfberry fruit
is neutral herb, it has a function to promote yin and yang
harmonization, thereby decreasing the dryness of lung qi which causes
the blood stagnation causes of abdomen cramps and pain.
d) Etc.
4. Herbs for blood deficiency
a) He shou wu (Fleeceflower root)
He
shou wu is a liver tonic herb. It promotes liver function in blood
formation and increases the kidney qi in assisting the liver in
transporting blood to the heart for circulation, thereby reducing the
blood stagnation causes of deficiency. It also improves the kidney in
urinary secretion, thus decreasing the risk of blood stagnation caused
by fluid retention.
b) Shu Di Huang (Chinese foxglove root)
Shu
di huang is a blood tonic herb. Besides improving the liver in blood
formation, it also increases the liver's qi by boosting the circulatory
system in transporting oxygen and nutrients to the body's cells thus
reducing the risks of symptoms of dizziness, pallid complexion,
palpitations, and scanty menstruation.
c) E Jiao (Donkey-hide glue)
E
jiao is an important herb for improving the liver in blood formation
and liver qi in regulating the blood circulation in the body thereby
reducing the symptoms of dizziness, shallow complexion, and palpitations
caused by blood deficiency.
d) Etc.
