Whole Food Ginger, the Stroke Prevention Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Stroke is a medical condition characterized by the death of brain cells as a result of inadequate of oxygen-rich blood flow.

In other words, stroke can be caused by either ischemia, due to lack of blood flow or hemorrhagia, due to bleeding.

A stroke is a medical emergency. Early intervention in most cases can minimize brain damage and potential complications.

According to the statistics, in the US, stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability.
Each year, approximately 795,000 people suffer a stroke and recurrent stroke. Most cases of stroke are associated with adults over the age of 65.

Not all strokes can lead to permanent brain damage. Some people with a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain do not result in permanent damage.

Besides aging, smoking, medical conditions such as unmanaged high blood pressure and cholesterol and diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity are some of the prevalent factors found in stroke patients.

Some researchers suggested a poor diet pattern such as the Western diet may have a strong impact in elevated the risk of stroke in the Western world.

Dr. Sherzai A, the lead scientist wrote, " Stroke is the fourth leading cause of mortality in the United States, yet it is 80% preventable by addressing lifestyle factors including nutrition".

And, "Adherence to DASH, Mediterranean, and prudent dietary patterns reduced the risk of stroke, whereas the Western dietary pattern was associated with increased stroke risk".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural whole food for reducing the risk of stroke researchers examined the effects of ginger in the risk of stroke.

Three candidates from the ginger family identified based on the prediction models in the study were compared to those of the control inhibitor L-454560.

PDE4D inhibitor is a potential drug target used in stroke prevention.

Administration of 3 compounds identified from the ginger family was capable in inhibiting cAMP binding associated with the increase of stroke risk, similar to those of PDE4D.

Genetic polymorphisms of PDE4D (T83C, C87T, and C45T) gene is associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke (IS).

Genetic polymorphisms of ALOX5AP are also associated with ischemic stroke and atherothrombotic events in stroke patients.

In order to reveal more information about ginger anti-stroke risk activity, researchers examined the ginger on the activities of phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) and 5-Lipoxygenase activating protein (ALOX5AP), the two of the major factors involved in the ischemic stroke, accounting for around 80-85% of total stroke.

Injection of ginger not only modulated the expression of PDE4D activities against the activation of cAMP-induced stroke and cardiovascular diseases but also inhibited the overexpression of ALOX5AP that could induce the development of atherosclerosis and stroke through inflammatory pathways.

Take all together, ginger may be considered a functional alternative for the prevention of stroke, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric, the Natural Remedy for the Treatment of Rosacea, Human Study Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that affects the face, leading to redness, pimples, swelling, and dilated blood vessels.

The most affected areas are the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin.

Epidemiologically, the condition may affect anyone, however, middle-aged women who have fair skin are more prone to the disease onset.

Most common symptoms of rosacea are facial redness, swollen red bumps, eye problem, and enlarged nose. If you have to experience the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

As of today, there is no cure for the condition. Treatments are focused on controlling and reducing the signs and symptoms and improving quality of life, including
* Medications that reduce redness such as drug brimonidine (Mirvaso), particularly in patients with a mild case of rosacea.

* Oral antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial inflammation and infection

* In severe cases, Isotretinoin may be prescribed, if other therapies have failed to improve the condition.

Some researchers suggested that laser therapy may be the best approach to reduce the redness of enlarged blood vessels.

Dr. Daniel M. Keller wrote, "Oxyhemoglobin in the blood absorbs light from lasers at wavelengths of about 595 nm (pulsed dye laser) and 532 nm (KTP laser), creating heat that helps destroy capillaries that contribute to the appearance of rosacea. Over a period of 3-4 weeks, the vessels are resorbed, and facial redness diminishes".

And, "Laser therapy is also effective for background redness but will be less effective for people with the papules associated with rosacea and “almost not effective at all for preventing flushing".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of rosacea, researchers examined the effect of turmeric on facial redness, a multifactorial in nature and a sign of many different conditions, including rosacea, photodamage, and flushing.

The prospective, double-blind, randomized pilot study included 33 healthy participants recruited from the dermatology clinic at the University of California, Davis and nearby community from 2016 to 2017.

Participants were randomized to receive one of three interventions (placebo, turmeric or polyherbal combination tablets) by mouth twice daily for 4 weeks.

By comparing the protection of turmeric and turmeric-containing polyherbal combination tablets versus placebo on facial redness, researchers found that facial redness intensity and distribution including rosacea showed a downtrend in the polyherbal combination group after 4 weeks.

Compared to the turmeric-containing polyherbal combination tablets treatment group, the placebo and turmeric groups had no statistically significant changes in image analysis-based facial redness.

In other words, turmeric-containing polyherbal combination tablets processed the ingredients that do not found in turmeric for the treatment of facial redness including rosacea.

Based on the findings researchers said, "Polyherbal combination tablet supplementation improved facial redness compared to the turmeric or placebo".

Taken altogether, turmeric combination with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of rosacea, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bromelain, the Natural Promotion of Intestinal Health

By Kyle J. Norton

Intestinal health is a subject that covers multiple positive aspects of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the effective digestion and absorption of food, promoting the balance of intestinal microbiota.

According to general knowledge, people who eat a diet with fruits and vegetables that are high in fiber have been found to process a healthy microbiota including beans and legumes and berries.

Believe it or not, the human gut microbiota contains trillions of cells, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The gut microbiota is important to improve the digestive function in the absorption of nutrition, before passing them to the cells and tissue in the body.

In the immunity perspective, the gut microbiota and immune system interact to protect each other to ensure the optimal function of both the digestive and immune system.

In other words, imbalanced gut microbiota not only causes the dysfunction of the digestive system but also reduces the functional immune system in the protection of the body against infection.

Furthermore, in the neuro-perspective, balanced gut microbiota also exerted a strong interaction between the microbiota and the enteric nervous system (ENS), leading to improvement of both systems against the risk of potential diseases that link the microbial dysbiosis to gastrointestinal disorders.

Dr. Sai Manasa Jandhyala, the lead scientist in the summary of the benefits of normal gut microbiota wrote, " The normal gut microbiota imparts specific function in host nutrient metabolism, xenobiotic and drug metabolism, maintenance of structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, immunomodulation, and protection against pathogens.

And, Several factors play a role in shaping the normal gut microbiota. They include (1) the mode of delivery (vaginal or cesarean); (2) diet during infancy (breast milk or formula feeds) and adulthood (vegan based or meat based); and (3) use of antibiotics or antibiotic like molecules that are derived from the environment or the gut commensal community. A major concern of antibiotic use is the long-term alteration of the normal healthy gut microbiota and horizontal transfer of resistance genes that could result in a reservoir of organisms with a multidrug-resistant gene pool.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and for the treatment of pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the improvement of intestinal health researchers examined the effect of bromelain found in the pineapple on leukocyte migration, activation, and production of cytokines and inflammatory mediators in vitro.

According to the enzyme immunoassays, injection of bromelain induced immune response, However, in the digestive process, bromelain sensitive molecules formulated in antacid from both leukocytes and colon epithelial cells were removed, leading to retaining substantial proteolytic activity.

Where proteolysis is the process of breaking down of proteins into smaller polypeptides or amino acids which play an integral role in removing toxins from the body, supports metabolism, encourage healthy digestion.

Dr. Hale LP, the lead scientist said, "Although anti-bromelain IgG was detected in both serum and stool after long-term oral therapy, these antibodies did not prevent bromelain proteolytic activity within the gastrointestinal tract".

Based on the findings, researchers suggested bromelain enzymes that remain intact after oral administration proteolytically protect the murine gastrointestinal tract by modifying the colonic inflammation.

In order to reveal more information about bromelain used in some developed countries for the protection of colonic inflammation, researchers examined the bromelain, a crude extract from the pineapple stem on digestive health.

In an animal model, oral administration of bromelain improves the decrease in defecation in abdominal postoperative rats.

Furthermore, injection of bromelain inhibited overexpressed the mRNA protein associated with the initiation of inflammation and restored the protein mRNA involved the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines in the colon of the postoperative rats.

Dr. Wen S, the lead scientist said, "(The result strongly suggested that) bromelain improves decrease in defecation in postoperative rats, at least in part, by inhibiting colonic iNOS overexpression via the NF-kappaB pathway".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the promotion of intestinal health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane for the Prevention and Treatment of Renal Fibrosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Renal fibrosis is a condition of kidney scars caused by improper healing of the kidney in regenerating damaged cells after an injury.

The process of kidney healing after injury involved serval overlapping phases, including inflammation, extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis,  production and dissolving collagens,  regeneration, and remodeling.

Renal fibrosis over time may result in progressive loss of kidney function, leading to kidney failure in the advanced stage.

Epidemiological studies suggested that age, gender, genetics, and perpetual activation of fibroblasts through priming are some of the prevalent factors that cause on the set of poor healing of kidney in the initiation of renal fibrosis.

Most patients with renal fibrosis are asymptomatic. Therefore, most cases of renal fibrosis are diagnosed at the advanced stage.

At this stage, patients may experience symptoms of chronic kidney disease (CKD), including weight loss and poor appetite. swollen ankles, feet or hands due to water retention, and blood in your urine.

As of today, there are no effective treatments for preventing the progression of renal fibrosis. Treatments of renal fibrosis are to reduce symptoms and delay the disease progression of the disease.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of renal fibrosis with no side effects, researchers in the renal disease team led by the Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University examined 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM), a natural acid condensation extracted from cruciferous plants, anti-fibrotic effects.

Selected rat kidney (NRK)-49F fibroblast cell mouse models induced renal fibrosis by a unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) and stimulated the production of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1.

Where transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 are inflammatory cytokines that frequently occur together during a regulatory T cell response.

According to the tested assays, treatment of DIM reduced kidney injury and production of interstitial collagens fibrosis.

Furthermore, DIM inhibited the expression of fibronectin involved in cell adhesion, growth, migration, and differentiation and increased fibronectin were found to associate with hypertrophic scars. and collagen-1 the collagen fiber involved the formation of scars.

Moreover, DIM promotes the expression of a protein associated with tumor suppression E-cadherin in the UUO model that protects the healing against the formation of scars.

DIM suppressed local fibroblast proliferation, a process that begins with a reaction to the clot associated with scar developing, observed by the scar contraction with the level of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and vimentin in scar tissue.

Additionally, DIM inhibited the renal fibrosis by significantly reduced the TGF-β1-induced proliferation of NRK49F cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

Interestingly, DIM decreased Smad2/3 phosphorylation associated with the excessive deposition of collagen and but increased Smad7 expression against keloid formation.

The results strongly suggested DIM inhibited the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 in the activation of proteins and genes associated with the formation of scarrings.

Dr. Xia ZE, the lead scientist said, " DIM inhibits TGF-β/Smad2/3 signaling to attenuate renal interstitial fibrosis via inhibiting local fibroblast activation".

Taken altogether, DIM may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of renal fibrosis through its anti- renal scarring activity, pending to the confirmation fo larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of renal fibrosis,, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry Anthocyanin, the Easy Way to Protect the corneal epithelium Against UV-induced Photokeratitis

By Kyle J. Norton

Photokeratitis is an uncommon condition induced eye pain caused by exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays from either the sun or artificial sources.

Under normal condition, the automatic pupil dilation protects the eyes by reducing the energy entering the eye. In some cases, if the levels of visible light are very high, the instinct reflex of the bain take over to have the eye either close or turn away from the energy sources.

Snow blindness caused by the reflection of UV rays is very common in people who live in the areas of the North and South Pole and high mountains.

Most common symptoms of photokeratitis, depending on the time-length exposure include pain, redness, blurriness, swelling,  headache, and temporary vision loss.

Some patients may experience also temporary color changes in your vision.or vision loss.

You can easily protect your eyes against photokeratitis by wearing sunglass in the bright day,  reduced time exposure to artificial UV.

Normally, the condition goes away on its own within a few days. Treatment is totally depending on the severity of the symptoms, ranging from flushing with warm water, prescribed eye drops or antibiotics in case of infection.

Researchers in the urgency to find the ingredient for the treatment of acute UVB exposure induced photokeratitis and apoptosis in corneal cells compared the effects of either nano-AST, AST oil, lutein, or bilberry extract 3 hours before and shortly before UV irradiation (dose: 400 mJ/cm2) in mice.

24 hours after irradiation, according to the sample collected, corneal epithelium was significantly thicker in mice orally administered with nano-AST than in the others (p < 0.01), with significantly less NF-κB nucleus translocation involved in the induction of proinflammation, and significantly fewer TUNEL cells associated with apoptotic DNA fragmentation.

Weaker dihydroethidium (DHE) associated with free radical oxidation was detected in the nano-AST group (p < 0.05) relative to the others.

In other words, nano-AST protects the corneal tissues and cells by reducing inflammation and decreasing cell death.

Dr. Harada F, the lead researcher said, "Oral administration of nano-AST demonstrated a protective effect on UV-induced photokeratitis via antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic activity".,

Additionally, in order to obtain more information of researchers examined administered with AST diluted in polyethylene glycol (PEG) in instillation form (15 μl) to the right eye in C57BL/6 mice against UV-photokeratitis.

Before injecting with AST, UVB exposure mice induced cell death and thinning of the corneal epithelium. However, the epithelium was restored after irradiation in AST-treated corneas.

Compared to those treated with vehicle, irradiated corneal epithelium was significantly thicker in eyes treated with AST eye drops and less cell apoptosis.

Furthermore, AST also reduced oxidative stress in irradiated corneas.

In other words, AST-treated cultures after UVB-irradiation protects the corneal tissue and cells against the cytotoxicity of TKE2 cells.

Based on the finding, Dr. Lennikov A and colleagues wrote, "Topical AST administration may be a candidate treatment to limit the damages by UV irradiation with wide clinical applications".

Taken altogether, anthocyanin, a carotenoid, presented in seafood, may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of photokeratitis, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
