Moronic Acid Inhibits Parameters Associated with Diabetes

Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of diseases.

In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.

According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.

Diabetes is the most common type of chronic disease besides cardiovascular diseases.
Antidiabetic activity is a process that uses certain forms of medications, including herbal medicine to
limit the progression of diabetes and improve the quality of life of patients.

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

Most commonly acquired or adultery diabetes is type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

According to statistics, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.

About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.

Moronic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belongings to the group of Terpenes found in extracted from Rhus javanica, Mistletoe, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effects of Morolic (1) and moronic (2) acids are the main constituents of acetonic extract from Phoradendron reichenbachianum (Loranthaceae), on diabetes.

In a  non-insulin-dependent diabetic rat model, daily-administered morolic (1) and moronic (2) acids (50 mg/kg) significantly lowered the blood glucose levels at 60% since the first day until the tenth day after treatment than untreated group (p<0.05).

Furthermore, both compounds diminished the plasmatic concentration of cholesterol (CHO) and triglycerides (TG), returning them to normal levels in the blood samples obtained from diabetic rats.

Pretreatment with 50 mg/kg of each compound also induced significant antihyperglycemic effect after glucose and sucrose loading (2 g/kg) compared to the control group (p<0.05).

Most importantly, compounds 1 and 2 induced inhibition of the elevation of 11β-HSD 1 activity found in type 2 diabetes at 10 μM.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " morolic and moronic acids have shown sustained antidiabetic and antihyperglycemic action possibly mediated by an insulin sensitization with consequent changes of glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides".

Taken altogether, moronic acids combined with tocotrienols may be considered supplements for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
