Beta-Sitosterol Reduces the Onset of Gouty Arthritis in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Arthritis is a general form of the inflammatory disease associated with the inflammation of one or more joints.

The most common symptoms are joint pain and stiffness found mostly in the aging population.

The most common caused of arthritis is a joint injury that did not heal properly, metabolic abnormalities caused by overexpression of uric acid and infection-induced bacteria or virus.

However, there are some cases of arthritis caused by autoimmunity, a condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the joint tissues, such as in rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

According to the information provided by the Arthritis Foundation, in the US, approximately 54 million adults are living with the condition.

Believe it or not, almost 300,000 babies and children have arthritis or a rheumatic condition.

Gout, a painful and recurrent condition mostly affected one joint is a type of arthritis caused by uric acid building up in the blood that induces joint inflammation.

Epidemiologically, high levels of uric acid found in the body that leads to the forming of crystals are the culprit, caused by the inability of the kidney to get rid of uric acid.

Most cases of gout are found in patients who follow the diet with a high intake of meats and seafood and foods containing higher levels of purine such as alcoholic beverages, especially beer, and drinks sweetened with fruit sugar (fructose).

Reduced intake of the aforementioned products has been found to reduce the onset of recurrence of the condition in many previous patients.

Believe it or not, most patients with gout and recurrent gout also associated with medical conditions of hypertension, renal insufficiency, and hypertriglyceridemia.

Gouty arthritis is a form of inflammatory arthritis associated with high levels of uric acid in the blood that lead to sudden, severe episodes of pain, tenderness, redness, warmth, and swelling of the joints.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of arthritis, researchers examined the effects of ethanolic extract of L. trichocarpha, its ethyl acetate fraction and its main bioactive compounds on gouty arthritis by countering hyperuricemia and inflammation.

According to the results of an experimental model of gouty arthritis,
* Crude ethanolic extract and its ethyl acetate fraction showed significant urate-lowering effects.

* LTE was also able to significantly inhibit liver xanthine oxidase (XOD) activity in vivo at the dose of 250mg/kg.
\
* LTE, LTA, lupeol, β-sitosterol, lychnopholide, eremantholide, luteolin, and apigenin showed strong inhibitory activity against monosodium urate crystals-induced paw edema in mice.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Ethanolic extract of Lychnophora trichocarpha and some of its bioactive compounds may be promising agents for the treatment of gouty arthritis since they possess both anti-hyperuricemic and anti-inflammatory properties.".
Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol found abundantly in Lychnophora trichocarpha may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of gouty arthritis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
