Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica) Inhibits Breast Cancer in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The woman breast is made up of specialized tissues that produce milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissues. The size of a woman's breast is totally determined by the amount of fats.

Cancer is a class of chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth associated with the alternation of cell DNA.

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the breast tissues.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue before spreading into deeper layers of the breast.

Signs and SymptomBreast cancer is first noticed as a painless lump in the breast or armpit and most often discovered by you or your partner may discover the lump or your doctor during a routine physical exam.
In the early case of cancer, symptoms normally include
1. Lump (mass) in the breast
2. Lump in the armpit (lymph nodes)
3. Nipple discharge (clear or bloody)
4. Inverted or retracted nipple
5. Scaly or pitted skin on nipple persistent tenderness of the breast
6. Unusual breast pain or discomfort
7. Etc.

In advance case of cancer, as cancer have spread to a distance of the body, symptoms include
1. Bone pain (Secondary tumors in the bone)
2. Shortness of breath (Secondary tumors in the lung)
3. Unintentional weight loss and drop in appetite (Secondary tumors in the liver)
4. Headaches, neurological pain or weakness (Secondary tumors in the nervous system)
5. Etc.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding natural compounds for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the latex of fig fruit (Ficus carica) on breast cancer growth.

The animal study included 24 female rats randomly divided into 3 groups as follow
* In the cancerous group, 0.5 ml 7, 12-dimethylbenz (a) anthracene was injected to nipple for breast cancer induction.

* In the control group received sesame oil at the same volume through similar route.

* In the fig latex treated group (Fle), breast cancer was induced and then 0.5 ml of fig latex was intratumorally injected on a daily basis for 4 weeks.

According to the tested differentiation,
* The tumor size in Fle group was significantly decreased in the latex group compared to the cancerous group.

* The red blood cell in the blood, hemoglobin, RBC and their indices were significantly decreased, whereas platelet, leukocyte, and white blood cell numbers were significantly increased in a cancerous group compared to the control group.

Most importantly, there were no differences in these parameters in the Fle group compared to the control group.

In other words, Fle group and control group exerted similar anti-breast cancer activity compared to the cancerous group.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, " fig latex could decrease tumor growth without having any adverse effect on hematological and histological factors".

Taken altogether, common fig or fig (Ficus carica)  may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
