Cardiovascular disease is a class of chronic condition characterized by the dysfunction of the heart and blood vessels, including heart diseases and stroke.
The causes of cardiovascular diseases include
* High blood pressure contributes to the hardening of the arteries.
* High levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) build up in the arteries as a result of an uncontrolled diet with high levels of saturated fat and trans fat.
All these add to the formation of atherosclerosis lesions and eventually arterial blockage or anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease.
In other words, stroke can be caused by either ischemia, due to lack of blood flow or hemorrhagic, due to bleeding.
A stroke is a medical emergency. Early intervention is most cases can minimize brain damage and potential complications.
Furthermore, MCAO animals also showed significant impairment in cognitive functions.

Stroke is a medical condition caused by reduced blood flow to the brain resulting in cell death due to blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

Sadly, stroke is one of the most common causes of death worldwide.
In the US, according to statistics, approximately 800,000 people suffer a stroke in which 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Nearly three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65.
Similar to heart diseases, the most common risk factors of stroke are aging, family history with heart disease, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure and cholesterol, obesity, smoking, and stress epidemiologically.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of arterial diseases, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera (WS) supplementation on middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) induced mitochondrial dysfunctions in an experimental model of ischemic stroke.
Before treatment with WS, ischemia-reperfusion injury animals

Before treatment with WS, ischemia-reperfusion injury animals
* Showed the increased oxidative stress indicated by increased reactive oxygen species and protein carbonyl levels.
* Decreased antioxidant enzymes including the levels of superoxide dismutase and catalase activity, along with a reduction in GSH levels and the redox ratio,
* Impaired mitochondrial functions and enhanced expression of apoptosis markers.
* Increased the activity of caspase-3 and caspase-9 associated with neuron apoptosis observed, by the altered expression of apoptotic proteins Bcl-2 and Bax in tested animals.

WS pre-supplementation, on the other hand, ameliorated MCAO induced oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunctions, apoptosis, and cognitive impairments.
Based on the evidence, researchers said, "The results show a protective effect of WS pre-supplementation in ischemic stroke and are suggestive of its potential application in stroke management".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered supplements for stroke management, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
