Healthy Food Cabbage, the Potential Anticancer Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of chronic disease caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue or specific organ in the body due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Compared to all cancers, lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancer in the US.

Angiogenesis is the process that develops new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels by invasive tumors to provide energy(nutrition and fluids) for cancerous cells growth and proliferation.

Believe or not, 1/4 of cancers death are due to lung cancer.

Depending on types of cancer, people with cancers may experience general and specific symptoms.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of malignant tumors, researchers investigated the anticancer effects of kimchi prepared using the standard Baechu cabbage and Amtak Baechu cabbage by comparing the standard Baechu cabbage and dry salt treatment method (SK-D); the Amtak Baechu cabbage and dry salt treatment method (AK-D), the standard Baechu cabbage and brine solution treatment method (SK-B), and Amtak Baechu cabbage and brine solution treatment method (AK-B).

In human pancreas cancer cells (Capan-2) and human liver cancer cells (HepG2), AK-D and AK-B compared with SK-D and SK-B (p < 0.05). At 2.0 mg/m treatment showed a significant increase in cell growth inhibition.

Experimentally, the inhibition of Capan-2 cells was more than doubled after treatment with AK-B and AK-D compared with SK-B and SK-D but was only 1.2 times in HepG2 cells.

AK-D and AK-B treatment compared with SK-D and SK-B exerted a strong activity in inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest by significant increasing the levels of p21 associated with cell cycle suppression

Furthermore, AK-B showed a higher ongoing cytotoxic effect compared with AK-D.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " these results indicate that kimchi made with Amtak Baechu cabbage and treated with brine solution (AK-B) had a superior anticancer potential against both types of cancer cells, with the effects being greater in pancreatic cancer cells compared with liver cancer cells.".
Taken altogether, cabbage may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancers, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
